Cherry Lane Meridian, Idaho (208) SUNDAY WORSHIP 9:30 AM Monthly Message from The Rev. Michael Case, Priest-in-Charge I don t know about the rest of you, but for me April seemed extremely busy and extremely long. And yet, here we are in May and the Easter Season is almost over. In just a few short weeks we will celebrate Pentecost. The term Pentecost means fiftieth day. In the Old Testament, it referred to the Feast of Weeks, a seven week agricultural period that focused on the harvesting of the first fruits. Josephus, the first century historian, used the term to refer to the fiftieth day after the first day of Passover. And in the New Testament, the term is used to refer to the coming of the Spirit on the Day of Pentecost shortly after Jesus death, resurrection, and ascension. Pentecost become, for Christians, a celebration of the gift of the Spirit the marking of the fulfillment of a promise which Jesus gave concerning the return of the Holy Spirit. Pentecost also marks the transition in our liturgical year from the Easter Season into the Season of Pentecost, or the period of ordinary times a season of the church year not dedicated to any particular season or observance. While the work of the church is always a focus, the Season of Pentecost gives us time to really look at the work we are called to do as the people of God, and as the Body of Christ in the world. So what is the Spirit calling you to do as we prepare to enter this season of ordinary times? What is the Spirit calling us to do as a community of God? How can we carry the Easter themes of reconciliation and new life into the world about us? Continued on page 2
2 MAY 2018 Page 2 Monthly Message from The Rev. Michael Case Continued from page 1 As we move into this period of ordinary times, watch for opportunities at for formation, as well as training for various ministries. If here is something particular you would like to learn about, make those desires known and let s explore. If there is a ministry you think you would like to become involved in, let s chat. As we prepare to move into our longest liturgical season, I look forward to working together to discern what God is asking of us. Together, we can help build God s Kingdom here and now. In Christ s love, Michael+ SENIOR WARDEN S MESSAGE It is that time again for our annual yard sale which is usually in June. For I don t know how many years Lorraine Bowring has organized the yard sale. So, this year she has decided to retire. I want to thank Lorraine and family for all the many hours they have put into this project. So, my plea is going out for someone to step up to head a committee to plan the yard sale if we are going to have one. I know that Lorraine would be glad to give you helpful information about the yard sale. If you are interested in this project please call the office or office@episcopalholynativity.org or contact Jo Ann Myers or Cindy Wolfenbarger. Jo Ann 2018 Goals & Committees Four goals for the Church of have been established for Our next step is to enlist individuals who would be interested in the specific areas to form committees and begin to move forward. These goals are: CAPITAL CAMPAIGN: Mike Magette, Chairman (208) Vestry Liaison: Garry Mattson STEWARDSHIP: Gladys Clymens, Chairman (208) Vestry Liaison: Shawna Myers YOUTH GROUP: Christy Fendley, Chairman (208) Vestry Liaison: Christy Fendley OUTREACH & EVANGELISM: Carrie Magette, Chairman (208) Vestry Liaison: Len Anderson If you would like to be on a committee, please contact the chairman of that committee. We would like at least 4-6 members on each committee. Thank you, for your consideration of these wonderful efforts.
3 MAY 2018 Page 3 APRIL VESTRY HIGHLIGHTS The meeting opened at 6:30 pm with Garry Mattson reading the Prayer for Vestries March Vestry Minutes Cindy Wolfenbarger The minutes were approved as presented by on March 24th. Treasurer s Report Mike Magette Mike handed out and reviewed the Treasurer Reports. He had budgeted for the 2 A/C units in April and that is not going to happen, so he changed the A/C unit estimate to October. We are still doing very well financially. Donna asked if she could pay more of the bills online rather than writing checks. She will make a list of the payments she makes online for Jo Ann to review and approve. Mike also checks the balances every month. Vestry Reports: Pumpkin Patch: Mike M. asked if we were going to dig up the yard behind the rectory to plant pumpkins this year. Christy F. said the Youth Group want to have the garden and the money selling the pumpkins. The Girl Scouts would like to help sell pumpkins. Garry was asked if this could be done. The concern is the sprinklers and how big to make it. Mike and Phil will look at it this next Sunday and see what the possibilities are. Parish Hall Banners: Mary Buchanan was not present this evening to lead this discussion. It will be tabled until the next meeting. Office Copier: Mike Magette explained that the copier we have been using and were going to complete purchasing in a couple months is obsolete. AOS does not service the Sharp brand anymore and cannot get parts for it. They put a Kyocera in the office as a loaner. We may purchase or lease this copier. It will be less expensive to use and hopefully will last longer. Mike crunched the numbers and it appears that it would be best for us to just purchase it outright and then pay a monthly maintenance/copy fee. Since we do have the money now, the members recommended that we purchase the copier. Paradise Point Campaign: Jo Ann Myers explained that the Paradise Point Camp Committee is putting together a 3-year Capital Campaign to make improvements to the camp. They presented us with a suggestion as to how our parish can contribute. Currently, we are preparing our own Capital Campaign for and do not feel right presenting this (Paradise Point) to our congregation at the same time as we present the one for HN. Christy was asked how much money was in the Paradise Point Youth scholarship fund.$3,500. At this point, pays out about $800 each summer for campers from to go. Cindy suggested that since we do have a healthy account for the youth, we could set up a separate account and use the Birthday and Thanksgiving donations to go to the General Paradise Point account. If in the future, the Youth account becomes depleted, we can reconsider how to manage this. Jo Ann said a person from the camp committee would like to come meet with the Vestry. She will set up a meeting with them in May. After we have talked to them, we will make our decision as to how to proceed. The meeting ended at 7:35 PM with the members praying the Lord s Prayer. Respectfully submitted, Cindy Wolfenbarger Vestry Clerk

5 MAY 2018 Page 5 EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS POINTER Provided by Bob Burnz Anything from a major disaster to a simple car crash could cause a power line to fall and energize whatever it touches. Staying safe means being aware of the surroundings and poten al dangers. Any downed power line should be treated as if it is energized even if it is not sparking, smoking, or making a buzzing sound. Remember these safety rules: Downed Power Line Safety Stay away from the downed line, Idaho Power Company suggests a distance of 100 yards if possible. Report the incident immediately, in the Treasure Valley call Idaho Power at (800) or dial 911. Do not touch objects that are near or in contact with the line. If someone else touches it, do not touch them because the electricity may ow to you. Call 911 immediately for assistance. Be especially aware of your surroundings when driving after a damaging storm. If a power line is down on the ground in water, do not drive your car through the water. Post Disaster Electrical Hazards There may be a strong desire to immediately begin cleaning things up, but hazards may be waiting within the mess. Floors and objects may be in contact with frayed or broken wires and could be conducting electricity. If there is water in or near electrical circuits or equipment, turn off the power at the main breaker or fuse in the service panel (breaker box). For information on how to locate and shut the power off go to: how-to-turn-o -power/. Never touch electrical switches or equipment while standing in water. If the floor is wet in front of the service panel, it may not be safe to approach it; call a professional electrician to turn the power off and inspect the electrical system. If you are in your vehicle and a power line falls on it, take the following steps: Stay inside the vehicle and dial 911 if possible. Warn others to stay away and not touch the vehicle. If it is no longer safe to stay in the vehicle because of a re or other life threatening situa on, open the door and jump out and away from the vehicle as far as possible. Keep your feet together and land on both feet. With your feet side by side, shu e away from the area. Do not li either foot or touch the vehicle and the ground at the same me.
