1 The newsletter of Holy Comforter Episcopal Church Epiphany 2018 Comfortable Words Appreciation Dinner and Parish Meeting scheduled for Jan. 26 & 28 The annual parish Volunteer Appreciation Dinner will be held Friday, January 26 at 6 pm at the Parish Hall. Those confirmed include Ross Herbst, Emily Lamport, Denise Manos, Rodney Mason, Morris Massingill, Theadora Stubbs, Julia Wommack and Toby Wommack. Denise Johnson and Margaret Meadows were received. Those reaffirmed include Ann Booth, Donna Box, Ken Box, Dena Cline, Jim Ernst, Robin Hackney, Harland Hoppock, Amanda Millington, Judy Panasci, Sciobhan Short and Suanough Zentell.
2 Meeting to discuss children s ministry set for Jan. 24 All are invited to a Happy Hour on next Wednesday, Jan. 24 at 6pm at the Northrup house. I would like us to discuss our Sunday School program for our children/ youth. Some suggestions for discussion could be; age/grade groups, willing teachers/door people, possible Sunday School scheduling/time/ s, locations, activities/lessons, etc. I know this in itself is a lot to discuss but please send me any other concerns /suggestions. We will provide snacks and ice but please bring your choice of beverage. If you know of anyone that would be interested in helping with Sunday School, please invite them to come! We certainly don't need to leave anyone out. We have been blessed to have so many children attending our church but with that comes the responsibility of taking them on for Christian growth/education. Our "village" needs to accept them as one of our first priorities. AND if your 'plate is full', please keep the Sunday School in your prayers. FYI...I am NOT becoming the new Christian education director. I am just hoping to keep our kids involved in our church. Deborah Northrup New BCP sponsorships available The church is getting all new copies of the Book of Common Prayer and would like to gain sponsorships for them. For $20 a person/family can dedicate a BCP to a person/ family. Each sponsored BCP will have a personalized dedication label inside of the front cover. Please no more than one family name or two individual names per dedication. Those interested may contact Donna Trusty at drummom7@yahoo.com or

5 Schedule for Wednesdays in Epiphany, Lent and beyond Wednesday evenings in the Epiphany season... With our Wednesday evenings necessitating postponement these past three weeks we are going to rearrange our programming a little bit. We were going to showcase Dave Ramsey's Legacy Journey (which is a sort of Part Two to his Financial Peace University class), but we simply do not have the time needed to complete the program. Instead, we shall postpone this valuable class to the Summer or even the Fall. And should anyone wish to borrow the material, I will happily loan the kit to you. Instead, we are going to use the remaining three Wednesday evenings to enjoy each other's company over games. Board games and cards and Scrabble, whatever you wish to bring we will play. Wednesday evenings in Lent Ash Wednesday is Feb. 14, which ushers in Lent. The Lenten season, more than a penitential season, is a season of "seeding; of making the conditions right for Easter flowering (or flourishing). Therefore, at the suggestion of Preston, we are going to spend the Wednesday evenings in Lent talking about the historical people and events that led to Jesus' Advent! As Preston rightly says, "this is a part of the Bible not talked about enough." At Holy Comforter we shall do our part to paint a more complete picture of Jesus' life and ministry. Preston cleverly titled the series: The seeds of Christ- Israel s History from Solomon to John the Baptist Wednesday evenings in Easter And looking far in advance, for the seven weeks of Easter we will spend our Wednesday evenings together walking through the Book of Acts, which is in a lovely way the flowering of the empty tomb- being how Jesus' disciples grew into their own after Christ Ascended to the right hand of God following His Passion story.

7 Lenten Fish Fry help needed It is time again to start planning and preparing for our Lenten Fabulous Fish Fry Fridays with our first being on Friday, Feb. 16. I am getting the plans together and have signup sheets up on a bulletin board in the Parish Hall. If you are new to Holy Comforter, you will want to know that our Lenten Fabulous Fish Fry Fridays are a big deal to all of us at HC and to a lot of those in our community. Each week we work to put together the best fish plates in our area to help our parishioners and community observe Lent for the six Fridays of Lent. Many of our parishioners volunteer to furnish baked goods, and to help with set-up, prep, frying the fish, serving and cleaning-up each week. The work starts each week with set-up and prep on Thursday evenings thru cleanup each Saturday morning. It is a great way to get to know fellow parishioners and to serve HC. It can also be a wonderful Lenten discipline of sacrifice and giving of your time, gifts and talents. There is something for everyone so I encourage you to sign up to serve or just to come out to enjoy the fellowship and see what it is all about. It is work but the blessings are abundant. With this ministry, we are able to do community outreach by inviting our family, friends and the community to come join us, by providing meals for several families in need, and by donating part of our proceeds to the local food pantry. So, we ask you to sign up to help and/ or to invite family and friends to join you to enjoy a meal. We also ask you to pray for the safety and success of this ministry. Thank you to those that have already committed to help. We look forward to seeing you all there. The dates are: Feb. 16, Feb. 23, March 2, March 9, March 16 and March 23. I ask that you mark your calendars and make plans to attend and help now. If you have any questions just ask me or one of our other parishioners. I can be reached by at barbarajmarin@yahoo.com.
