484 Hamilton St. Regina, SK S4R 2A7 (306) eadmcanada.com OCTOBER NEWSLETTER 2016 #170 We never give more honour to Jesus than when we honour His Mother, and we honour her simply and solely to honour Him all the more perfectly. We go to her only as a way leading to the goal we seek Jesus, her Son. Saint Louis Marie de Montfort,, #94

Dear Apostles of Divine Mercy, With the month of October approaching, we are called once again to remember that this is the month of Mary and the Rosary. The Feast of the Holy Rosary is on October 7th. October 5th is the Feast of St. Faustina, which we will celebrate with a Mass on October 6th, as she is the model of our Apostolate. This month s Newsletter is entitled Enter Into The Tenderness Of Mary! As we come near to the end of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy Year, we need to end it properly by entering into the tenderness of the Mother of God. May we make a special effort to do as she asks of us, that is to do whatever Jesus, her Son asks of us. May the sweetness of her tenderness watch over us so that all of us may rediscover the joy of God s tenderness. Her entire life was patterned after the presence of Jesus and His mercy. She is the Mother of the Crucified and Risen One and because she participated intimately in the mystery of His love. She was the chosen one right from the beginning, and only as we follow her compassion and tenderness will we be able to live in perfect harmony with Her Son. Her hymn of praise was sung at the threshold of the home of Elizabeth and was dedicated to the mercy of God which extends from generation to generation (Lk 1:50). We too were included in those prophetic words of the Virgin Mary. This will be a source of tenderness and strength to us as we journey through the difficult and challenging days of our lives. At the foot of the Cross, Mary, together with John, the disciple of love, witnessed the words of forgiveness spoken by Jesus. Mary attests that the mercy of the Son of God knows no bounds and extends to everyone, without exception. Let us send our prayers of supplication to her, so that she may never tire of turning her merciful eyes upon us, and make us worthy to contemplate the face of her Son, Jesus. On Saint Faustina s Feast Day, October 5th, let us extend our prayers and petitions to her, whom Jesus chose in a special way, to teach us how to live and walk unwaveringly in the mercy of God and His trust. Let us learn that through the tenderness of Mother Mary, that we can follow in her footsteps, and in turn share the mercy of her Son with others. Shirley Oleskiw, EADM Director Page 2

OUR EADM CENTRE Here in the Chapel, we have special devotions to our Blessed Mother. We enjoy the devotions, particularly the reciting of the Rosary before every Mass, and at the celebrations of her Feast Days. The Month of October is no exception. We will celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary on October 7th from 3:00-4:00 pm, with hymns, reciting the Litany and Rosary. Mary s Garden is being changed for winter with angels and trees of light for the months of October and November. Daily Adoration of our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament continues here in our Chapel. We are still offering the Travelling Home to Home Divine Mercy Image kit for Cenacle groups and parishes. We have already distributed over 100 of these prayer kits. During this Year of Mercy, it is very important that we take advantage of all the graces that the Lord is offering for us. St. Faustina is the Apostle of Mercy, so it is no wonder that so many miracles have been occurring during this special Jubilee Year of Grace, through her intercession. Our Centre is definitely a great place of healing. I have been compiling a pictorial booklet on our history including stories of miracles that we have been told or having experienced. With the grace of God, our goal is to have it completed as soon as possible, however, due to my neck injuries I can only work on it for short periods of time. We continue to encourage our members to study the Diary, by using our Cenacle booklets. In her writing in the Diary, St. Faustina tells us how Jesus instructed her and us about His mercy and how we should live. This is the only way that you will find out what Jesus wants from us in these modern times. On October 6th, you are invited to join us in a Special Healing Mass celebrating the Feast Day of St. Faustina (Oct. 5th). Following the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, we will have a blessing with St. Faustina s oil and relic, and then coffee and dainties. The pilgrimage to Guadalupe for January 11-19th, 2017 has been filled with 14 pilgrims, and arrangements are now being finalized. Final payments are due by November 10, Mass will be held on Thursday, October 6th with 6:30 pm. We will pray the Novena to St. Faustina at 3:00 pm daily from September 26 October 4. Page 3

Enter Into The Tenderness Of Mary! Saint Faustina was blessed with many visions and locutions from our Blessed Mother. She was very grateful for the gifts of purity, humility and spiritual union with our Lord that she shared with Our Blessed Mother. While in earth, she lived a life of suffering, sacrifice, perseverance and prayer while trying to fulfill the will of Jesus. As Saint Faustina's love for our Blessed Mother grew, she taught her the love of God s holy will. Saint Faustina tells us, I understood how my soul ought to accept the will of God in all things Nothing could tear me away from this recollection (Diary,1437). Mary's total abandonment to God inspired her: My spirit brightens up in Your gentleness and Your humility, O Mary (Diary, 620). Saint Faustina was taught by Mary: I look for no happiness beyond my own interior where God dwells. I rejoice that God dwells within me; here I abide with Him unendingly; it is here that my greatest intimacy with Him exists; here I dwell with Him in safety; here is a place not probed by the human eye. The Blessed Virgin encourages me to commune with God in this way (Diary, 454). She learned to have compassion and faith during suffering. Mary told her, Know, My daughter, that although I was raised to the dignity of the Mother of God, seven swords of pain pierced my heart. Don't do any thing to defend yourself; bear everything with humility, God himself will defend you (Diary, 786). Because St. Faustina believed, this gave her great courage to intercede and become a victim soul for the sick and dying. Through the tenderness of Mary we must listen to her word, Your lives must be like Mine, quiet and hidden, in unceasing union with God, pleading for humanity and preparing the world for the Second Coming of God (Diary, 625). If it were not for Mother Mary's tender intercession, humanity would already be severely punished. Mary showed St. Faustina Her Heart pierced with a sword, shielding the world from the wrath of God: If it were not for the Mother of God, all our efforts would be of little use (Diary, 686). Mary comforts us in our misery. Let us likewise, with St. Faustina, follow Mary in her tenderness as our model and teacher. We need to offer her our souls with acts of love and gratitude for God's many graces. by Shirley Oleskiw Page 4

Mary, Mother of Tenderness We know that from the height of the Cross, Jesus turned His dying countenance to His Mother, His sole treasure on earth. When Jesus saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing near, He said to His mother, 'Woman, behold, your Son!' Then He said to the disciple, 'Behold, your mother!' And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home (Jn: 26-27). In the person of John, Jesus had intended to embrace the whole world. St. Bernadine of Sienna said that in those precious moments, Mary became our Mother as well. While Jesus was praying on the Cross, Mary was praying beneath it, with the holy women and John. Jesus Heart was pierced with a lance; Mary s heart was pierced as if by a sword. Thus, the Blessed Virgin advanced in her pilgrimage of faith and faithfully persevered in her union with her Son unto the Cross. There she stood, in keeping with the divine plan, enduring with her only begotten Son the intensity of His suffering, joining herself with His sacrifice in her mother s heart, and lovingly consenting to the immolation of this victim born of her: to be given, by the same Christ Jesus dying on the Cross, as a mother to His disciple with these words: Woman, behold your Son. Our Blessed Virgin told Saint Faustina that no matter how many sins a man has committed, if he comes to her with a desire to change his life, she welcomes him. She is always ready to soothe and heal the gaping wounds of his soul. That is why her name is Mother of Mercy. Just as any good mother would want to soothe her child, so Mary wants to soothe the gaping wounds of our souls. We all know the tenderness and love we feel for our children. Can we imagine our Blessed Mother s tenderness for each one of us? She looks upon each one of us as her own special child. And as her own Son was crucified, we then became her only sons and daughters. What a treasure to have a mother so full of love and grace, ready to give us all that we need, and to draw us closer to her Son! She told St. Faustina, I am Mother to you all, thanks to the unfathomable mercy of God. Most pleasing to Me is that soul which faithfully carries out the will of God.Be courageous. Do not fear apparent obstacles, but fix your gaze upon the Passion of My Son, (Cont d on page 6) Page 5

love of God and neighbor; compassion and mercy (#1244). This vision of Mary was the culmination of the Saint's life. Saint Faustina prayed to obtain mercy for all of us; that we may put our trust in a compassionate Jesus who hears all our prayers. by Shirley Oleskiw Home to Home Travelling Divine Mercy Kit Do You have one travelling in your Parish? 7 Saint Faustina-a Model for Eucharistic Apostles of Divine Mercy It was to Saint Faustina Kowalska ( ), a simple uneducated nun from Poland, that the Lord chose to spread the Divine Mercy message and devotion. She was born in 1905 in the village of Glogowiec in Central Poland. She came from a large, poor peasant family, and attended less than three years of elementary school. When nearly twenty years old, and after a few years of work as a domestic servant working with wealthy families, she entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy. Her seemingly ordinary life concealed in itself an exceptionally profound union with God. It was to this simple nun that our Lord came and announced....today I am sending you with My mercy to the people of the whole world. I do not want to punish aching mankind, but I desire to heal it, pressing it to My merciful heart (Diary, 1588). Jesus told St. Faustina, I demand from you deeds of mercy, which are to arise out of love for Me. You are to show mercy to your neighbors always and everywhere. You must not shrink from this or try to excuse or absolve yourself from it. I am giving you three ways of exercising mercy towards your neighbor: the first by deed, the second by word, the third by prayer. In these three degrees is contained the fullness of mercy and it is an unquestionable proof of love for Me. (Diary, 742). Deed is expressed in spiritual and corporal works of mercy. Pope Francis in his Papal Bull #15 for the Year of the Jubilee of Mercy asks us all to take part in this mission. He states, It is my burning desire that, during this Jubilee, the Christian people may reflect on the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. It will be a way to reawaken our conscience, too often grown dull in the face of poverty. And let us enter more deeply into the heart of the Gospel where the poor have a special experience of God s mercy. Jesus introduces us to these works of mercy in his preaching so that we can know whether or not we are living as his disciples. Let us rediscover these corporal works of mercy: to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, welcome the stranger, heal the sick, visit the imprisoned, and bury the dead. And let us not forget the spiritual works of mercy: to counsel the doubtful, instruct the ignorant, admonish sinners, (Cont d on page 8) Page 7

comfort the afflicted, forgive offences, bear patiently those who do us ill, and pray for the living and the dead. We cannot escape the Lord s words to us, and they will serve as the criteria upon which we will be judged: whether we have fed the hungry and given drink to the thirsty, welcomed the stranger and clothed the naked, or spent time with the sick and those in prison (cf. Mt 25:31-45). Moreover, we will be asked if we have helped others to escape the doubt that causes them to fall into despair and which is often a source of loneliness; if we have helped to overcome the ignorance in which millions of people live, especially children deprived of the necessary means to free them from the bonds of poverty; if we have been close to the lonely and afflicted; if we have forgiven those who have offended us and have rejected all forms of anger and hate that lead to violence; if we have had the kind of patience God shows, who is so patient with us; and if we have commended our brothers and sisters to the Lord in prayer. In each of these little ones, Christ himself is present. His flesh becomes visible in the flesh of the tortured, the crushed, the scourged, the malnourished, and the exiled to be acknowledged, touched, and cared for by us. Let us not forget the words of Saint John of the Cross: as we prepare to leave this life, we will be judged on the basis of love. As Eucharistic Apostles of Divine Mercy, we must exemplify His mercy by doing spiritual and corporal works of mercy. Saint Faustina prayed the Divine Mercy Chaplet incessantly for the dying, and on several occasions bilocated to the bedside of a dying person. The Lord told her, My Daughter, help me to save souls. You will go to a dying sinner, and you will continue to recite the Chaplet, and in this way you will obtain for him trust in My mercy, for he is already in despair (Diary, 1797). As members of Eucharistic Apostles of the Divine Mercy, we must aspire to imitate the virtuous life of St. Faustina. We must lead a sacramental life, spreading appreciation for the gift of the Eucharist and the sanctity of life, and living and doing the spiritual and corporal works of mercy. We must overcome any obstacles of indifference and respond to the requests of Jesus and Pope Francis. Like St. Faustina, we may also be called to suffer in the valley of tears. Yet we look forward to being with our Merciful Savior and Merciful tender Mother, and receiving our eternal reward in Heaven as promised by Jesus. by Shirley Oleskiw Page 8

The Feast Day of the Our Lady of Holy Rosary: October 7 This feast was instituted by Pope St. Pius V in thanksgiving for the great naval victory over the Turks at the battle of Lepanto on this day in the year 1570, a favor due to the recitation of the Rosary. This victory saved Europe from being overrun by the forces of Islam. Lepanto, perhaps the most complete victory ever gained over the Ottoman Empire, on October 7, 1571, is commemorated by the invocation "Help of Christians," inserted in the Litany of Loretto. In 1572, on the anniversary of the battle, Pope Pius V instituted this feast in thanksgiving to Our Lady of the Rosary. He invited all to celebrate by meditating on the mysteries of Christ and following example of the Blessed Virgin Mary. At Belgrade the Turks were defeated on the Feast of Our Lady at Nives in A second victory gained that year on the Octave of the Assumption determined Pope Clement XI to command the Feast of the Rosary to be celebrated by the universal Church. Leo XIII added the invocation "Queen of the most Holy Rosary, pray for us," to the Litany of Loretto. The Feast is in reality a great festival of thanksgiving for the signal and countless benefits bestowed on Christendom through the Rosary of our blessed Queen. In modern times successive popes have urged the faithful to pray the Rosary. It is a form of contemplative prayer, mental and vocal prayer, which brings down God s blessing on the Church. It is a biblically inspired prayer which is centered on meditation on the salvific mysteries of Christ in union with Mary, who was so closely associated with her Son in his redeeming activity. During the month of October, we should all make a special effort to pray the Rosary daily. by Shirley Oleskiw Ask Mary, Mother of Mercy for Help. Jesus tells us, First, do not fight against a temptation by yourself. Second, ask My Mother and the Saints for help. Third, have the certitude that I am looking at you and supporting you. Fourth, do not fear other struggles. Fifth, know that by fighting bravely you give Me great glory (Diary, 1560). Page 9

Mother of Mercy Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life our sweetness and our hope! (Salve Regina) Let us honour the Blessed Virgin Mary in some special way during the month of October, especially on October 7th, the feast of the Holy Rosary. Mary is both Mother of Christ and Mother of the Church, that is, our Mother (See the Catechism of the Catholic Church, #963). Mary is also the Mother of Mercy. St. Faustina tells us in her Diary, that Mary said, I am not only the Queen of Heaven, but also the Mother of Mercy and your Mother. (Diary, 330) St. Faustina heard and saw our Mother Mary on many occasions. We can see the powerful intercession of our Mother of Mercy through the eyes of St. Faustina who wrote, I saw the Lord Jesus, like a king in great majesty, looking down upon our earth with great severity; but because of His Mother s intercession He prolonged the time of His mercy (Diary, 1261), and, In the evening, I saw the Mother of God, with Her breast bared and pierced with a sword. She was shedding bitter tears and shielding us against God s terrible punishment. God wants to inflict terrible punishment on us, but He cannot because the Mother of God is shielding us... (Diary, 686). We can pray to Mary and with Mary....When we pray to her, we are adhering with her to the plan of the Father, who sends His Son to save all men... The prayer of the Church is sustained by the prayer of Mary and united with it in hope (CCC, 2679). St. Faustina often wrote in her Diary that Mary, our humble and gentle Mother of Mercy, was her teacher, telling her how to live for God. Let us pay attention to these important words. We recall Mary s instructions at the Wedding at Cana, Do whatever He tells you (Jn 2:5). Mary s words address the Church of every age, especially our modern times, when we are being bombarded by worldly materialism and selfishness of heart. Let us pray with St. Faustina, O Mary, my dearest Mother, guide my spiritual life in such a way that it will please Your Son (Diary, 240). by Shirley Oleskiw Page 10

Pray the Rosary, You Can Save the World "The power of one Hail Mary can change and save the world. In all our efforts and endeavors, we can never underestimate the power of prayer, and must always rely on the help of God. In a special way we commend our efforts to the Mother of God and our own Blessed Mother. The Rosary, especially prayed in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament, is a powerful means of spiritual grace. Prayer is our first and strongest resource. At Fatima Our Lady said, I am the Lady of the Rosary. Pray the Rosary every day to obtain peace for the world. After each decade say the following prayer: O my Jesus forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, and lead all souls to heaven, especially those in most need of thy mercy. St. Padre Pio, the stigmatic priest, said: The rosary is the weapon. Pope Paul V said, The Rosary is a treasure of graces. Will you give 1% of each day to God? If so, pray a Rosary! Saturday Masses of the Blessed Virgin Mary There are many feasts throughout the year, on which we especially venerate our Blessed Mother. However, it is not possible to commemorate all the "Feasts of Mary" in the year. But, since the 1500s, permission has also been given to celebrate a Saturday Mass in honor of Our Lady on any Saturday that is not the day of another major feast. Pope Paul VI recommended this practice as "an ancient and simple commemoration." After Vatican Council II, several new Masses were written to extend and expand this veneration of Our Lady. Some are specifically intended for use at a particular Marian shrine, others for Saturday Masses. Therefore, on a Saturday when no particular Mass is specified, you could ask your parish priest to celebrate a votive Mass in honor of Mary, using readings from the Common of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Lectionary. Page 11

How to Get an Indulgence for Praying the Rosary The Holy Rosary Pope John Paul II wrote in his Apostolic Letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae, 25, The Rosary is at the same time a meditation and an imploration with Mary to unite ourselves more and more to Jesus Christ.... To pray the Rosary is to hand over our burdens to the merciful hearts of Christ and His Mother. What is an indulgence? Our Catechism of the Catholic Church, # 1471 teaches: The doctrine and practice of indulgences in the Church are closely linked to the effects of the sacrament of Penance. An indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is duly disposed gains under certain prescribed conditions through the action of the Church which, as the minister of redemption, dispenses and applies with authority the treasury of the satisfactions of Christ and the saints. An indulgence is partial or plenary according as it removes either part or all of the temporal punishment due to sin. Indulgences may be applied to the living or the dead. Through the Holy Catholic Church, by the authority granted her by Christ Jesus, that temporal pain can be removed with indulgences that are concrete steps toward conversion here on earth. Therefore the earning of indulgences cannot be only external gestures, done superficially, but must be a process of interior growth toward actual detachment from sin. Catholics can gain an indulgence for themselves or apply it to the souls of the deceased. We can gain a plenary indulgence for reciting the Holy Rosary by following certain guidelines laid down by the Holy Catholic Church. We must ask for the indulgence and fulfill the following three conditions: sacramental confession in the month, Eucharistic Communion and prayer, (Our Father and Hail Mary) for the pope s intentions. The five decades must be recited continuously, and a plenary indulgence may be gained only once in a day. We must have a penitent attitude that opens us to receive the complete remission of the temporal guilt of sin, which God desires to grant us through the Holy Catholic Church by Shirley Oleskiw (The Gift of the Indulgence, Apostolic Penitentiary, Nov. 29, 1998, January 29, 2000). Continued trust in Him in all situations is paramount. LEARNING AND DISCUSSION: 1) In what ways do we daily fall into the same faults? 2) What are the greatest obstacles to holiness? LESSON GOALS At the end of the discussion, members should understand: The continued need to trust in Him, and obstacles to holiness in our lives, How we deny Our Lord daily, yet He does not allot a certain number of pardons.
