2 Walk to Jerusalem Lent 2016 Improve the health of your body, mind and soul This book belongs to: This is a 9,724 mile virtual pilgrimage from Our Lady of the Lake. We will journey across this great country of ours, make our way over the Atlantic Ocean and travel through the Northern part of Africa to our destination, Jerusalem You will log your miles each week, beginning February 7th. We have 7 weeks to meet our goal. Focus on this devotional booklet as you walk. This year, it being the Jubilee Year of Mercy, we have revised our devotional booklet to center on mercy and forgiveness. We hope it guides you through this Lent and opens your heart, mind and soul to the grace and peace that can be acquired through giving and receiving mercy. The Chaplet of The Divine Mercy How to Recite the Chaplet The Chaplet of Mercy is recited using ordinary rosary beads. The Chaplet is preceded by two opening prayers from the Diary of Saint Faustina and followed by a closing prayer. 1. Make the Sign of the Cross 2. Optional Opening Prayers You expired, Jesus, but the source of life gushed forth for souls, and the ocean of mercy opened up for the whole world. O Fount of Life, unfathomable Divine Mercy, envelop the whole world and empty Yourself out upon us. (Repeat three times) O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fountain of Mercy for us, I trust in You! 3. Our Father Give us this day 4. Hail Mary Holy Mary 5. The Apostle's Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; He descended into hell; on the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen. 6. The Eternal Father Eternal Father, I offer you the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your Dearly Beloved Son, Our Lord, Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world. 7. On the Ten Small Beads of Each Decade For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world. 8. Repeat for the remaining decades (Saying the "Eternal Father" (#6) on the "Our Father" bead and then ten "For the sake of His sorrowful Passion" (#7) on the following "Hail Mary" beads.) 9. Conclude with Holy God (Repeat three times) Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world. 10. Optional Closing Prayer Eternal God, in whom mercy is endless and the treasury of compassion inexhaustible, look kindly upon us and increase Your mercy in us, that in difficult moments we might not despair nor become despondent, but with great confidence submit ourselves to Your holy will, which is Love and Mercy itself. 3 WEEK 7 Can I live my life as a forgiving soul? Let us then approach God s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. Hebrews 4:16 Mercy prayer Here I am Lord, constantly striving to be more Christ-like so that I may see you at the end of my journey. I humbly ask that in my end time you will call me forward to your throne so that I may rejoice forever in your Glory. Getting Started on your Walk to Jerusalem 1. The official starting date is Feb 7, the Sunday before Ash Wednesday. However, if you re a late starter, you may register and start your walk anytime during Lent. 2. Each week your focus will be on the scripture provided for you in this devotional booklet. Meditate upon the verse and memorize it, if you like -- and enjoy the peace and grace of your walk. 3. Log your total weekly miles every Sunday on the parish web site or write them on the tally board under your name in the Parish Hall. 4. Watch us progress to Jerusalem on the map that is displayed in the Parish Hall and also noted in the weekly bulletin and the parish web site. What is a mile? If you do not know the distance you have traveled, 20 minutes of walking at a moderate pace will give you one mile. A reading on a pedometer of 2,000 steps is equal to one mile. 20 minutes of seated aerobic activity equals one mile Credit for Miles You get a credit of 5 miles per week if you have registered and walk together as a family! If you walk as a family, when you turn in your total at the end of the week add 5 more miles to your total for that week. If you are unable to walk or it is too difficult for you to do any aerobic activity you may receive one mile of credit for each prayer you say for the walkers. On your total for each week write a PM after your amount to designate that your total for the week was in prayer miles. And it is the Lord, it is Jesus, Who is my judge. Therefore I will try always to think leniently of others, that He may judge me leniently, or rather not at all, since He says: "Judge not, and ye shall not be judged. 4 WEEK 1 Who is it that I am afraid of, God or myself? WEEK 6 How can I forgive someone if they have hurt me? Who is a God like you, who removes guilt and pardons sin for the remnant of his inheritance; Who does not persist in anger forever, but instead delights in mercy, and will again have compassion on us? I was caught by the cords of death; the snares of Sheol had seized me; I felt agony and dread. Then I called on the name of the LORD, O LORD, save my life! Psalm 116:1-4 Jesus, I freely give myself over to you, So that you might do whatever you need to do in me. Through your grace and mercy Lord, transform me. Heavenly Father, you shower me with your love and your compassion always. Teach me to be like your most Holy Beloved Son, granting me the strength and courage to forgive as you have forgiven me. Do you really know the living Jesus - not from books but from being with Him in your heart? Have you heard the loving words He speaks to you?... The devil may try to use the hurts of life, and sometimes our own mistakes - to make you feel it is impossible that Jesus really loves you, is really cleaving to you. This is a danger for all of us. And so sad, because it is completely the opposite of what Jesus is really wanting, waiting to tell you. Not only that He loves you, but even more - He longs for you. 5 WEEK 5 When could I have shown mercy to someone over the last week? WEEK 2 What is it that I most dislike about myself? For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, deluded, slaves to various desires and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful ourselves and hating one another. But when the kindness and generous love of God our savior appeared, not because of any righteous deeds we had done but because of his mercy, he saved us through the bath of rebirth and renewal by the holy Spirit Titus 3:3-5 All of us once lived in the desires of our flesh, and we were by nature children of wrath, like the rest. But God, who is rich in mercy, because of the great love he had for us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, brought us to life with Christ (by grace you have been saved) Ephesians 2:3-5 Jesus, through the grace of Baptism you have enabled me to be what you so desire me to be. It is through my own fault and failures that I have disappointed you. But it is through your divine mercy with the help of the Holy Spirit that I desire to be raised again to be more like you and what you want me to be. Jesus, I am unworthy to be loved by you. I have sinned and turned my back on you so often in the petty little things that I have done and thought. Distract me from these worldly desires, raise me above my weaknesses and lead me Lord to the quiet comfort of your mercy. 6 WEEK 3 What are the ways in which God has shown me mercy over the last week? WEEK 4 How can I show mercy to someone today? You were patient with them for many years, bearing witness against them through your spirit, by means of your prophets; Still they would not listen. Therefore you delivered them into the power of the peoples of the lands. Yet in your great mercy you did not completely destroy them and did not forsake them, for you are a gracious and merciful God.
