It is a sign for the end times; after it will come the day of justice. While there is still time, let them have recourse to the font of My mercy; let them profit from the Blood and Water which gushed forth for them (Diary, 848). Solemnity of Mary Jan. 1, 2015
Dear Apostles of Divine Mercy, May the New Year bring your families many blessings, as we celebrate the birth of Our Lord during this Christmas season. As we enter the New Year of 2015, on January 1st, the Feast of Mary, Mother of God. Let us begin with a special tribute to Our Blessed Mother. This Feast brings our attention to the fact that Mary bore the Son of God in her womb, and our salvation began through her. Let us especially remember to call on Mary, Our Mother, to help us in our daily lives. This month s newsletter is entitled A New Challenge! In order to grow in our faith, we need to continually learn more about it. As Eucharistic Apostles of Divine Mercy our mission should be to learn as much as we can about God s mercy and how to live it, and share it. The message of Divine Mercy, which St. Faustina left us in her Diary, Divine Mercy in My Soul, contains a treasure house of knowledge and can help us tremendously as we journey on our way to eternal salvation. We will begin a test project on understanding the Diary and it s teachings. For the next year, every newsletter, will contain two lessons taken from the Canadian Cenacle Formation Booklet. You may complete these lessons in the comfort of your own home, or you may choose to share them with your prayer group or family. A person can study and complete these lessons at their own convenient time. In order to do this study course you will need a copy of the Canadian Cenacle Formation booklet, St. Faustina s Diary, Divine Mercy in My Soul. The Catechism of the Catholic Church, the Encyclical letter of Pope John Paul II (Dives in Misericordia) The Mercy of God, and a Bible. The following supplies can be ordered and purchased from our Centre, here at EADM Canada in Regina. To encourage our Apostles of Divine Mercy to undertake this challenge, we will offer the Canadian Cenacle Formation Booklet, free of charge, as long as the postage is paid by the person requesting the booklet. We will emphasize the importance of the Eucharist and of Eucharist Adoration. We need to get to know Jesus on a more personal basis, so that we can call on Him in our good times, as well as when we are faced with difficult challenges in our lives. Adoring our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament, should become a sweet experience for us. We should take advantage of this special time and look forward to spending it with Jesus. This is Heaven on earth. by Shirley Oleskiw, EADM Director Page 2
OUR EADM CENTRE As the weather turns colder, our lightshow with the Nativity display has become a comforting scene for many who drive by and for the people who come to visit and pray at the Centre. Like the Magi of old, who sought a Babe and found Him in a quiet manger, so today we can find Jesus in a quiet Chapel. Like the time of old when many people did not recognize His birth, so today many people will not recognize Him, and will not even bother to enter the Chapel and spend a minute to pray and be with Him. In the time of Old, the shepherds came and adored the Lord, so today, humble people take time out of their busy schedules to come and pray and adore our Lord. What did the Magi find? They found peace and joy in the Child Jesus. Here in the Chapel everyone finds silence and peace. That is a great gift from Jesus in the Eucharist. As we face another year here at our Centre and Chapel, we continue to try and fulfill our mission, with a very grateful heart. Adoration will continue on a regular basis, however there will be no Mass on Thursday, Jan.1, as it is New Years Day and we will be closed. On the 14-22nd of January, I will also be taking the pilgrims to Guadeloupe. Pray for us to have a holy and grace filled pilgrimage. Our Annual EADM General Meeting will be held in February, thus giving me more time to prepare the financial statements. We have updated our catalogue for The prices on some of the articles and the pamphlets have increased to reflect our costs. We are presently working on revamping our web site, to make it easier to access and download our information. We will let you know when it is completed. If you have any ideas or suggestions in reference to our newsletter, adoration, or any other items, please do not hesitate and write and let us know. The Centre will be closed from December 24-28th, January 1st and 2nd, with no Mass in January. Page 3
The Holy Mother of God, Mother of the Church Solemnity of Mary, Jan. 1st, 2015 As the Christmas season unfolds, the Holy Spirit continues to invite us to ponder the events surrounding Jesus' birth. The Feast of Mary, Mother of God which we celebrate on January 1st, reminds us that the Blessed Virgin Mary, is our Mother as well, and that she brings us all to Her Son and instructs us, Do whatever He tells you (Jn 2:5). By her charity Mary joined Jesus in bringing about the birth of His Church. Therefore, our Holy Catholic Church has named her Mary, Mother of Christ, Mother of the Church. St. Faustina wrote, Then I saw the Blessed Virgin unspeakably beautiful. She came down from the altar to my kneeler, held me close to herself and said to me, I am Mother to you all, thanks to the unfathomable mercy of God. Most pleasing to Me is that soul which faithfully carries out the will of God.... Be courageous. Do not fear apparent obstacles, but fix your gaze upon the Passion of My Son, and in this way you will be victorious (Diary, 449). She remained steadfast to the end without wavering beneath the Cross, beside Jesus, witnessing the salvation of all mankind. This is the mystery, the wonder that Mary treasured and pondered in her heart (Luke 2:19). She trusted in God in everything that she did and she carefully observed all the ways God was working through her. She didn't let God's words and deeds become memories, she kept them alive in her heart. God doesn't want His truths to fade from our minds either. He wants us to imitate Mary by keeping His promise alive in our hearts throughout the year. Indeed, He is giving us this New Year as an opportunity to grow in knowledge of His love. Mary had Jesus with her on a daily basis, now through the Eucharist, we can experience Jesus' presence day after day. The more we prayerfully reflect on who Jesus is and what He has done for each one of us, the closer He draws us to Himself. We can benefit from Mary s examples of holiness which we learn in Holy Scripture, in the Liturgy at Holy Mass, and in our spiritual tradition. She stood beneath the Cross and became our Mother. Let us pray with her and to her. The Church gives the Blessed Virgin Mary the additional titles of Advocate, Helper, Benefactress, and Mediatrix. by Shirley Oleskiw Reference: The Catechism of the Catholic Church, 963, 973, 969, 2030, 2679, Page 4
Knowing, loving, Living the Eucharist In order to explore at least some of the immense riches stored up in the Mystery of the Eucharist, let us engage our minds, hearts and will. First with the mind one can meditate on the Eucharist in an attentive, orderly way. This can be done by reading books on the Eucharist which leads us to personally uncover and deeply ponder this gift of the Mystery of love. If we understood God, Who is love and who gives Himself to us, it is a gift full of love! The Eucharist, said St Bernard said, Is that love which surpasses all loves in Heaven and on earth. St. Thomas Aquinas wrote: The Eucharist is the Sacrament of Love. It signifies love, it produces love. Concrete instance which rivets our attention on this love is the Eucharistic Miracle at Lanciano in Italy. There one venerates a consecrated Host which was transformed into living flesh and has been preserved in this state for more than a thousand years. It is a piece of flesh which is still living and which is a part of a human heart as has been proven by the most recent chemical analyses. We can come to no other conclusion but that the Eucharist is indeed all one Heart! St. Peter Eymard, who founded the congregation of Priests of the Blessed Sacrament declares, The Eucharist is the supreme proof of the love of Jesus. After this, there is nothing more but heaven itself. Yet, how many of us do not know the vast extent of the love contained in the Eucharist! Second to explore the riches of the Eucharist, we must use our heart. We must love Jesus Christ Himself! Love for the Eucharist must spring from the heart and be ever alive in us all. Now even love needs exercise. The heart needs to be exercised to love the true God, to long for The Author of Life (Acts 3:15). Holy Communion represents the loftiest point of this exercise of love, whose consuming flames unite the heart of a creature and Jesus. St. Faustina expressed the greatness of this unity of God with His lowly creatures. Many times, in her Diary, St. Faustina expressed her desire for receiving Jesus and being untied with Him. This is called the exercise of the heart. We can also exercise this unity in Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. As we spend time with Jesus, we also come to a closeness with His Heart. Third is to find the riches of the Eucharist, one should exercise the will. One must do this by bringing the divine lessons of the Eucharist into their lives. What good would it be to discover the infinite worth of the Eucharist (Cont d on page 6) Page 5
as we ponder it and seek to love it at Communion time, if we do not proceed to live it? The Eucharist teaches a love that goes beyond telling. It teaches total self-sacrifice, and an equalled lesson in humility and self-effacement. It teaches patience and unrestricted dedication. But what do we draw from all this? We surely ought to achieve something, if we reflect on how Jesus loved us and still loves us with such great mercy even to the end? If we have problems and anxieties, we need to turn to Him, speak to Him and not delay about asking for His help and support, for He is the very One who said, Without Me you can do nothing (Jn 15;5). By receiving the Eucharist and adoring our Lord, not only are we capable of everything, but we also obtain what should amaze us and move us to be identified with Jesus. St. Augustine tells us, It is not a case of us transforming Christ into ourselves, as we commonly do with food; but it is Jesus who transforms us into Himself. So let us go before Him: Come to Me and I will refresh you (Mt 11:28). Let us often visit Him, entering a Church or Adoration Chapel every time we can and pausing a little before the Blessed Sacrament, we can put both our heart and body before Him. St. Faustina was constantly eager to make visits to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, to make Holy Hours of Adoration, spiritual communions, ejaculatory prayers and earnest acts of love that came from her heart. How much profit she gained from this and how much good she passed on and still continues to pass on through her miracles of healing and comfort. Thinking of the Eucharist during his sermon, St. John Chrysostom once asked, How can we make our bodies a host? and gave this answer:.let your eyes look at nothing evil, and you have offered a sacrifice; let not your tongue speak unbecoming words, and you have made an offering; let not your hand commit a sin, and you have offered a holocaust. Let us therefore always keep our gaze on Jesus, adoring and partaking of His beauty, His goodness and His purity, and we will become all beautiful, good and pure. by Shirley Oleskiw Reference and Exerts taken from: Jesus Our Eucharistic Love Page 6
Holy Mass is the Sacrifice of the Cross Only in Heaven will we understand what a divine marvel is the Holy Mass. No matter how much effort we apply and no matter how holy and inspired we are, we can only stammer if we would explain this Divine work, which is a Mystery that surpasses men and angels. The Mass is infinite, like Jesus. We will never be able to comprehend its value and worth because that is a Mystery. St. Alphonsus de Liguori went so far as to say, God Himself cannot bring about an action holier and greater than the celebration of a Holy Mass. Why? Because Holy Mass can be said to be a synthesis summing up the Incarnation and Redemption: It contains the Birth, Passion and Death of Jesus mysteries which God accomplished for our sake. The Second Vatican Council teaches that at the Last Supper, the night in which He was betrayed, Jesus initiated the Eucharistic Sacrifice of His Body and Blood, in order to continue the Sacrifice of the Cross throughout the centuries until His return. (Sacrosanctum Concilium, n 47 ). Pope Pius X11 also had this insight: The altar on Golgotha is not different from the altar of our churches; even this is a mountain [like Mt. Golgotha] on which stands a cross and the One crucified, where the reconciliation between God and man takes place. The celebration of Holy Mass has the same value as the Death of Jesus on the Cross. Wonderful are the saving effects which every Sacrifice of the Mass produces in the souls of those who participate. It obtains sorrow and pardon for sins. It lessens the temporal punishment due to sins. It weakens the influence of Satan and the untamed impulses of our flesh. It strengthens the bonds of our union in the Body of Christ. It protects us from danger and disaster. It shortens the punishment of Purgatory; and it obtains for us a higher degree of glory in Heaven. If we only understood the importance of the Holy Mass, we would never be bored, inattentive and looking at our watches. We should imitate the angels, who, when a Holy Mass is celebrated, come down from Paradise and take their stations about our altars in adoration to intercede for us. The prayers we say at Mass are united with Jesus and are very powerful. There are also many promises associated with grace that will be received at the hour of death, for those who reverently participate in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. As Eucharistic Apostles we have a (continued on page 8) Page 7
special mission of spreading the message of God s mercy. The Chaplet of Divine Mercy holds a special place of honor as a Eucharistic prayer because it is a continuation of the offering of the Mass. And the simple prayer Jesus, Mercy! is a continuation of the Chaplet a plea for God s mercy for every moment of need. By praying this Chaplet we call on God the Father for His mercy on the whole world, in order to continue the Sacrifice of the Cross throughout the centuries until His Second Coming. In conclusion, we have much to be grateful for all that God has provided for us throughout all times for the salvation of our souls. Are we willing to learn and grow in our faith, so that we can come closer to Him? by Shirley Oleskiw Reference: Jesus Our Eucharistic Love by Fr. Manelli Our Lady of Guadalupe: A Model for Lay Apostles Thy Kingdom come, the daily petition of the Our Father, has always needed for its fulfillment the work and cooperation of the laity. Through baptism and confirmation the commission has been to make Christ and His teaching known and loved. The Spirit breathes where He will (Jn 3, 8) and the people of God have always had charisms (gifts) to help spread God s kingdom on earth. Through the introduction of the New Evangelization the Church has expressed that this era needs laymen more than ever before because of advances in communication, in industry, in the physical and social sciences, there are many new fields of human endeavor where laypeople have control and are expert. The Church can do little to bring the Spirit of the Gospel to these areas except though laymen and women. The Second Vatican Council and recent Popes recognized this need and issued a Decree on the Apostolate of the Laity. These documents put forth the fact that laymen and women are necessary in the mission of the Church, and spelled out the goals to be attained. To be a real Christian is to be an apostle. As Eucharistic Apostles of Divine Mercy, we need to understand that our role is important in the Church. This is why we have extended to our members the challenge of learning more about their faith, and thus in turn spread the Gospel. As laity we have responsibility to make Christ and His teachings known. (Cont d on page 9) Page 8
Our Apostolate in under the care and protection of Our Lady of Guadalupe which is the most Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, Queen of the Apostles. Her example of spiritual and apostolic life, while leading on earth a life common to all men, was filled with family concerns and labors. She was always intimately united with her Son and cooperated in the work of the Savior in a manner altogether special. Now that she has been taken up to heaven, with her maternal charity she cares for her children. All should devoutly venerate her and commend their lives to her motherly concerns. Four Hundred and eighty three years ago our Blessed Mother choose an obscure layman, Juan Diego the seer of Guadalupe, to lead mankind to herself. When she choose him, she wanted to emphasize her motherly concern, and to highlight a relatively modern chapter in the loving care of the Queen of the Apostles for her children. After that apparition Juan Diego lived constantly near her miraculous image, quietly caring for it as Joseph had cared for Mary herself. As with St. Joseph we don t know all the details. But we know of these men s charity and humility. Our Blessed Mother appeared to Juan, but judgment and authorization was reserved to the Bishop. The Bishop needed convincing, so our Blessed Mother revealed herself in the tilma. He was the necessary instrument of Divine Providence chosen to evangelize his people and millions were converted to the Catholic Faith. Here it illustrates the fact that layman may have to push their point when the Spirit wants things to be done. Just as Juan Diego had been placed into a situation that he did not particularly want to carry out, we too through this New Evangelization may find ourselves in the same precarious situation. I can recall almost 14 years ago, when the Lord wanted our Apostolate to begin on spreading the message of Divine Mercy in Canada. It was no easy task, but as a result of that decision to obey, I am sure that many souls have been brought to God and many more will be saved by all the faithful groups that pray in their churches across our country. Through Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament here at our Chapel, for over the last seven years, many graces have been unlocked for the conversion and healing of many people. Let us not be afraid to call on our Blessed Mother to help us as we continue to persevere in these difficult times. All we need is to Trust! by Shirley Oleskiw Page 9
Attending Holy Mass Due to the fact that the Holy Sacrifice is such a sublime mystery with so much benefit to our souls, we should consider ourselves fortunate every time we have an opportunity to attend a Holy Mass. In order not to lose the opportunity, we should never withhold ourselves because it might cost us some sacrifice. On Sundays and Holy days one is gravely obligated to participate in Holy Mass and whoever does not do so commits a mortal sin (Catechism of the Catholic Church, n. 2181). St. Faustina attended the Holy Mass as often as she could. St Pio of Pietrelcina celebrated Holy Mass while he was bleeding and had a fever! When illness sometimes prevented the saints from taking part in Holy Mass, they united themselves at least spiritually to those who were celebrating Masses in all the churches of the world. In our own daily lives, we ought to rank the Holy Mass ahead of any other good; for, as St. Bernard says, One merits more by devoutly attending a Holy Mass than by distrusting all of his goods to the poor and traveling all over the world on pilgrimages. Nothing in the world can have the value of one Holy Mass. Mere amusements, waste our time and also bring no profit to our souls. Let us be generous and willingly make sacrifices so as not to lose so great a good. St. Augustine said to his people: Every step one takes while traveling to hear Holy Mass is counted by an angel. One will be given a high reward for them by God in this life and in eternity. Some of us belong to the great number of Catholics who have not understood the value of Holy Mass, for this reason we lack the zeal and fervor that encouraged and inspired the saints to attend Mass every day and even several times a day. Once we attend the Holy Mass daily, it becomes very easy to want to spend more time with our Lord. So Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is something that we cherish very much. Praying before our hidden Lord in the Tabernacle, can play a very important role in our salvation, as this is the taste of Heaven here on earth. We should never place any other amusement in place of spending a hour with Jesus. He waits for us day and night. Let us ask the Lord to help us manage our affairs so that we will not lack the time to attend Holy Mass. by Shirley Oleskiw Page 10
The Eucharist Preparation: In order to appreciate the dignity of the Eucharist, and to prepare to receive the Lord with joy, the Christian community has recommended, since the early centuries, a time of fast from food and drink taken for nutrition. The ancient tradition of receiving the Eucharist before and food shows the importance of sacramental food. A time of silence and recollection is also desirable before Mass and Communion. The General Eucharistic fast is one hour from food and from beverages. Water and medicine do not break the fast. For the dying; no Eucharistic fast is necessary. For the sick, the elderly (at home or in hospital, even if not confined to bed), and for those who care for them: water and medicine at any time; they may receive Communion even if they have had something to eat or drink within the previous hour. Communion more than once a day: Persons who have already received Communion may receive Communion (only) once more on the same day at any Mass in which they are participating. Extraordinary ministers: Local Ordinaries may permit an individual to be a minister of Communion for one occasion, for a period of time or even permanently. The minister may receive Communion, give it to others and take it to the sick at home or in hospitals. See NBL31 (Extraordinary Ministers for the Administration of Holy Communion). This faculty may be used when no priest, deacon, or acolyte is present, when they are prevented from giving Communion because of another pastoral ministry, ill health or advanced age, or when the number to receive Communion is such that the Mass would be unduly prolonged. The Church encourages the original practice, as given by the Lord, in which Communion under both kinds is seen as normal, with Communion under one form alone considered as the exception rather than the rule. With permission from the local Ordinary, the faithful may receive Communion from the Chalice on any occasion (GIRM, no 283). The choice of receiving Communion in the hand or on the tongue rests with each individual communicant and must be respected by the minister distributing Communion. 12 A New Year A New Beginning As we begin the New Year we are challenged to make New Year s Resolutions. It s a time to make assessments and make new beginnings. It s never too late to make a change for the better. We are constantly changing, learning, and growing through our daily experiences. The year 2015 will offer us another opportunity to grow in holiness. We can make decisions to change for the better and grow closer to God. We can listen to the Holy Spirit and discover the will of God for ourselves in our lives. Our earthly life is a struggle toward perfection and eternal life. We can pray for the gift of knowing and understanding ourselves better as God knows us. Sometimes we have faults of which we are not aware, family and friends may see them, but we may not. We can ask Jesus to make us aware of these faults and help us to deal with them with patiently. St. Faustina tells us, O my Jesus, You do not give a reward for the successful performance of a work, but for the good will and the labor undertaken (Diary, 952). In faith and humility, we can continue to grow in holiness, knowing that our God of love and mercy is with us, encouraging us every step of the way. by Shirley Oleskiw 14th Annual EADM Meeting Thursday, February 5th, :30 pm pm Annual 7:45 pm Annual Reports Coffee and Dainties Please plan to attend! 13 The Hour of Longing for God From the Cross, Jesus uttered the words, I Thirst (Jn 19:28). In verse 30 the Evangelist adds...and bowing, His head He gave up His spirit. To give up the spirit means death, or to die. This phrase has two meanings. That through His death on the Cross He passes the Spirit on the Church. It is through the action of the Holy Spirit that we are able to thirst for God, who is constantly calling us to Himself. The Holy Spirit searches hearts to find a place to rest, but He does not force Himself upon us. In gentle whispering, He helps us to understand that He wishes to abide in us, but He needs our cooperation. If we accept His call, we will desire to be with God. St. Faustina explains, Oh if only souls would want to understand how much God loves them! (Diary, 1073). Fire is one of the symbols of the Holy Spirit. Like smoke that rises from fire, we too, filled with the Holy Spirit, can rise above our sufferings and look towards heaven. The Spirit acts in us as a builder; he removes the fear of dying and replaces it with a thirst for God. St. Faustina knew she was a pilgrim on a journey to heaven. She wished to die not from despair or mental exhaustion, but from a thirst for God. In Diary # 841 she tells us: You know that I am dying, and I am dying of longing for You; and yet, I cannot die. Death where are you? I desire to see you face to face. When will this come about for me? By knowing God s love, we can t help but long for Him. The deepest love is spontaneous. We can say I love You, this response can spring up within us, in response to the constant love of God. Grace always goes before us and knocks at the door of our hearts. If we respond to it, then more and more, it can bring us closer to God. The fire of the Spirit warms us up to such a degree, that we can be recreated according to God s delight. Knowing and loving God is the same. St. Faustina tells us, I feel that there is not a singles drop of blood in me that does not burn with love for You. O Uncreated Beauty, whoever comes to know You once cannot love anything else (Diary, 343). How can we cultivate this longing for God? Through prayer, we can desire God. With our minds and hearts full of God, we would not have any sinful desires or thoughts. During Adoration, we see the hidden Jesus, He sees us and in return He gives us both physical and spiritual strength. When we fix our gaze on God, He gazes back. St. Faustina wrote, (Cont d on page 14) Page 13
It is my delight to fix my gaze upon You, O incomprehensible God (Diary, 343). The person who longs for God, is always young at heart, and radiates a freshness and vitality that are both attractive and contagious. To mirror Christ is to have the same outlook and thinking, as He would have. Jesus asks St. Faustina to...look into My Merciful Heart and reflect its compassion in your own heart and your deeds (Diary, 1688). Every time as we begin a new day, it is an opportunity to make choices that He would make. It is a time to search for the meaning of life at the at the footsteps of the Beloved, as shown by St. Faustina, O humdrum days, filled with darkness, I look upon you with a solemn and festive eye (Diary, 1373). As we long for God, we keep Him in our thoughts, we are always grateful, and we never forget what He has done for us. The experience of God s goodness teaches us to trust in Him completely, in no matter what kinds of trials befall us. We have no fear, we cling to Him, and are able to cope with all the events in our lives. In our longing for God we thirst for God, because we love Him, and thus we become a source of goodness to all those around us. Many blessings, as well as a means of preventing punishments can be bestowed upon us. Jesus tells St. Faustina: You retrain Me, and I cannot vindicate the claims of My justice. You bind My hands with your love (Diary, 1193). by Shirley Oleskiw Reference: In the Rays of Mercy by Fr. Stanislaw Witkowski Holy Reminders Our Apostolate offers a new way to remind us of our faith. Throughout the formation process, we will be learning and praying more about God s Divine Mercy. The Chaplet of Divine Mercy, a Eucharistic prayer, is a mean of devotion to the Mercy of God. Jesus Christ is the Bread of Life, and made a sacrifice for us once and for all by dying on the Cross. This sacrifice is represented each time the Liturgy of the Eucharist is celebrated. 1) How is the Chaplet a Eucharist prayer? 2) Why is it important to pray the Chaplet for the sick and dying? (Diary, 687 and 811) 3) How is it possible that the Chaplet applies the death of Christ to the suffering we meet every day? 4) How can those in the health-related professions use the Chaplet? At the end of the discussion, members should understand: How the Divine Mercy Chaplet is a Eucharistic prayer. The importance of reciting the Chaplet hourly for the sick and dying, particularly in Adoration Chapels worldwide.
