After distributing communion, all EMHCs should strongly consider sanitizing their hands within the Work Sacristy via available bottles of sanitizer or within the special sacrarium wash basin. 26 EMHC MINISTRY REMINDERS On the next series of slides, we will discuss the following areas of emphasis that have been identified by various sources including parishioners, coordinators and clergy for our EMHC ministry to address: EMHC General Requirements Annual Adult Formation Early Arrival EMHC Procession Station Assignments Bowl Ministers Chalice Ministers Communicant Offering Communicant Blessing Infant And Child Blessings Chalice Cleansing Self-Communicating Ciborium Procession Dismissal 26 of 65
EMHC GENERAL REQUIREMENTS 1. Must be fully initiated (those who have been baptized, confirmed and have received First Communion). 2. Must be at least 18 years old or a senior in High School. 3. If married, must be in a marriage recognized by the Roman Catholic Church. 27 of 65
ANNUAL ADULT FAITH FORMATION All EMHCs are required to continuously enhance their faith by participating in Adult Faith Formation Training each year in the form of instruction, workshops or retreats. 29 ANNUAL ADULT FAITH FORMATION Throughout the year, an abundance of adult faith formation sessions are available on the campus of Saint Ignatius Loyola as well as other locations throughout the Archdiocese of Galveston Houston. In addition, reputable online Adult Faith Formation sessions are available and can be attended if they appear on the Saint Ignatius Loyola s list of recommended online Adult Faith Formation Sessions. A current list of Adult Faith Formation Training Sessions available throughout the Archdiocese (including online sessions) are provided within the EMHC area of the Saint Ignatius Loyola website or by contacting the Office of Liturgy and Sacraments. 29 of 65
EARLY ARRIVAL Thanks again for arriving at least 20 minutes prior to the beginning of Mass to sign in and participate in prayer with other Liturgical Ministers. By arriving early, you continually help ensure the EMHC Captain and Worship Coordinators that an ample amount of Ministers are available to serve during the Mass. Whenever possible, please attend Masses appropriately dressed to serve as an EMHC in the event your help is needed. 30 of 65
EMHC PROCESSION After the Sign of Peace, EMHCs are requested to immediately lineup for the Communion Procession between Sections G and H near the Reservation Chapel. Please reserve areas near the first two pews for Lead Chalices, Captains, Instituted Acolytes and Worship Coordinators. 31 of 65
STATION ASSIGNMENTS EMHCs are requested to wait for the EMHC Captain to assign chalice and bowl stations throughout the entire communion process. 32 of 65
STATION SELF-ASSIGNMENTS??? 33 of 65
STATION SELF-ASSIGNMENTS Proper positioning of EMHCs for the distribution of communion is vital to sustain the dignity and reverence of the Holy Mass. The EMHC Captains take this responsibility very seriously and are doing a very good job but they need your help to continue doing so. On various occasions, some EMHCs inadvertently select their own stations (without assistance from the EMHC Captain) resulting in the unfortunate display of disarray near the Sanctuary. 34 of 65
STATION SELF-ASSIGNMENTS We fully understand that serving the Precious Body and Precious Blood to a family member or friend is a humbling and rewarding experience. However, an EMHC choosing their own station often results in the EMHC Captain having to quickly make adjustments that sometimes leads to the delay of communion distribution. 35 of 65
STATION SELF-ASSIGNMENTS If the communicant line at your station has depleted and you have species remaining in your sacred vessel, please locate the EMHC Captain for guidance. The EMHC Captain may assign another station to you or direct you to the Altar to present your sacred vessel to clergy for transfer of the Precious Body and purification of your vessel. 36 of 65
BOWL MINISTERS If you have distributed all of the Precious Body within your sacred bowl and there are still communicants in line: 1. Request the communicants to remain in line 2. Inform EMHC Bowl Minister next to your station to begin distributing to communicants in your line 3. Locate EMHC Captain for guidance The EMHC Captain may request you to proceed to the Altar for refill of your sacred vessel by the Presider or Deacon and return to help at same or different station or you may be requested to simply proceed to the Altar and hand your sacred vessel to Presider or Deacon for purification. If the Presider or Deacon is not positioned near the Altar to refill your sacred vessel and EMHC Captain is unavailable to assist, please respectfully request the Presider or Deacon to take their place to allow them to assist at the Altar with sacred vessel refills. 37 of 65
CHALICE MINISTERS If the Precious Blood within your sacred Chalice has been consumed and there are still communicants in line: 1. Please refer the communicants to another station distributing the Precious Blood (if any) 2. Inform EMHC Captain that you have communicants waiting to receive the Precious Blood 3. Proceed to Credence Table and place your empty Chalice and Purificator on small corporal provided the near east side of Credence Table and proceed to the Work Sacristy for hand sanitization. Note: If the Altar doesn t have an empty Chalice, please place your empty Chalice on the Altar and your Purificator on Credence Table. 38 of 65
CHALICE MINISTERS If your Chalice contains Precious Blood upon the completion of Communion, please proceed to the Credence Table and wait patiently for a Deacon, Instituted Acolyte or another EMHC to receive your Chalice and Purificators and then proceed to the Work Sacristy for hand sanitization. IA D E E D E E de E E CREDENCE TABLE Note: Clergy members are considered Ordinary Ministers, therefore when transferring a Chalice containing remaining Precious Blood to a member of Clergy, recitation of The Blood of Christ is not required. 39 of 65
COMMUNICANT OFFERING When offering the Precious Body or Precious Blood to a communicant, graciously and without haste, make eye contact (when possible) and simply recite The Body of Christ or The Blood of Christ. Adding the communicant s name or any other words may seem to be a kind and personal gesture, however this may distract the communicant s personal time at the banquet with our Savior Jesus Christ. 40 of 65
COMMUNICANT BLESSING When a communicant approaches with hands folded across their chest, this represents a sign of their request to receive a blessing in lieu of communion. Priests and Deacons are allowed to give a formal blessing of the church and bowl ministers are permitted to offer simple blessings. Due to risk of spillage, chalice ministers are requested to refrain from offering blessings to any communicant. 41 of 65
COMMUNICANT BLESSING The simple blessing can be accomplished by gently placing the palm of your hand on the communicant s shoulder and reciting a blessing phrase such as May God Bless You and Keep You. Another acceptable form of simple blessing involves extending your hand without making contact followed by recitation of a simple blessing phrase. Please avoid contacting the communicant s skin or hair with tips of fingers utilized to distribute communion. Note: Formal blessings whereby the sign of the cross is administered is reserved for Clergy members only. 42 of 65
INFANT AND CHILD BLESSINGS When a child or communicant holding an infant approaches, bowl ministers are permitted to offer simple blessing phrases discussed on previous slides on behalf of the church. Due to risk of spillage, chalice ministers are requested to refrain from offering blessings to infants and children. If a child is not interested in receiving a blessing and walks away, please refrain from leaving your station to follow the child to administer a blessing. 43 of 65
EMHC CHALICES After communicant receives the Precious Blood, EMHCs are required to prepare the chalice for the next communicant by thoroughly wiping the contacted area with a clean portion of their purificator and rotating the chalice at least ¼ turn. 44 of 65
CHALICE CLEANSING Occasionally during Communion, some Chalices appear to be soiled with observable remnants of lipstick or other subtle markings. To prevent this from occurring, all Chalice EMHCs are reminded to thoroughly clean the Chalice with a purificator and rotate the chalice at least ¼ turn for the next communicant. Note: Excessive force is not required but please ensure Chalice area is cleaned sufficiently. 45 of 65
CHALICE CLEANSING Due to the delicate surface nature of our multi-pieced Chalices, EMHCs are requested to exercise special care when cleaning the Chalices during communion and within the work sacristy. Please ensure that the Chalice is cleaned with purificators after each communicant without applying excessive force or tension. Note: Excessive force or tension applied to multi-pieced Chalices can sometimes result in the separation of bowl from the stem and base. 46 of 65
SELF COMMUNICATING Frequently, EMHCs are placed in a position whereby there is Precious Body or Precious Blood remaining within their sacred vessel after communion. When this occurs, the EMHC is required to offer the remaining Precious Body or Precious Blood to another EMHC or Instituted Acolyte by reciting The Blood Of Christ or to member of Clergy in lieu of self consuming. 47 of 65
CIBORIUM PROCESSION The distribution of Communion formally ends when the Presider transfers remaining hosts (if any) in the form of the Sacred Body of Christ from EMHC Bowls to a large Ciborium. The EMHC Captain, escorted by an Altar Server, reverently carries the Ciborium to the Reservation Chapel for placement within the Tabernacle. While exiting the Work Sacristy near the Reservation Chapel, please pause briefly to ensure that you will not interfere with the path of Ciborium Procession. 48 of 65
DISMISSAL At the conclusion of Mass, the Presider concludes the service with a Final Blessing followed by a Recessional Hymn from the Choir. In order to sustain the dignity and reverence of the Holy Mass, EMHCs that plan to assist with vessel cleansing in the Work Sacristy are requested to remain in their pews until the Procession has exited the glass doors. IMPORTANT: All Liturgical Ministers should also refrain from entering the Sanctuary area until the Choir has completed the Recessional Hymn. 49 of 65

EMHC PRAYER Lord, as the apostle John stood next to Your Son s Cross, so I am privileged to stand next to Your Altar Table and serve in the Holy Sacrifice of the mass. In a long tradition of priestly people, I am grateful for the honor that is mine. May my behavior and the attitude of my heart reflect that holy honor as I strive to serve in a sacred way. With awe and wonder, I will hold in my hands the Body of Christ and His Sacred Blood, so that my sisters and brothers may be fed with the Food of Life. Make my heart and hands clean. Free me from anything of vanity and pride that might divorce me and the service that is mine from the heart of the Divine Mystery residing in this Holy Meal. May I, with Your Constant Assistance, truly wait upon You and Your people in this Holy Liturgy of Praise and Adoration. Amen 65 of 65
