1 Dear Friends, No one said the Christian life would be easy! I remember the day I decided that I would follow Jesus and I remember thinking how wonderful it all was. Life made sense, I felt I had direction and most importantly I had a friend (Jesus) that I was going to walk that life with. At 16 it was all sorted! Nothing would be a problem any more. I hadn t then fully appreciated the full extent of the story of the disciples in the boat on Galilee, as recounted in Matthew chapter 14:22ff. Like everyone else Have experienced a lot of storms in my life since making that decision to follow Jesus, and I dare say like everyone else there have been moments when I ve thought where is he? because I ve felt alone at various times in life. Then there have been times when I ve been able to look back and say yes, he was there, calming my personal storm. Perhaps the most poignant for me was on the birth of our first child who was born with a deformed leg which then had to be amputated at 18 months. That was traumatic, but as we look back both Alison and I can say that Jesus walked through the storm to meet us, calmed the fears of our hearts and brought us safely to the point of hope and expectation again. However, it is honest to say, that we didn t always feel so sure that he was there. I dare say some of us are feeling the same about the and the Circuit again and we need to be honest and realistic. Firstly we need to recognise the storm around us, the storm of not enough members in our Chapels, the storm of not enough preachers, the storm of not enough staff members for the coming year. We need to talk realistically about Chapel closures and the fact that we have too many services and not enough preachers; we need to be honest about our dependency upon the relative security of what we know (the boat) compared to the fear of walking on the water and doing things differently. Now, I ve said this before, but we can be an optimist, a pessimist or somewhere in between. By nature I m usually an optimist and activist; some are pessimists but that leads them to ask important clinical questions; many are somewhere in between and that can often lead to apathy or to the blaming of others for everything else. That is the group I fear most. In the boat there were probably the pessimists rowing against all the odds, fearing the worst, but doing their best. I suggest there were the optimists looking for coming of Jesus to save them, but there were the middle group also sitting doing nothing and saying we shouldn t have set out. Who missed out? That middle group wouldn t have had the same sense of surprise as the pessimists and how wonderful their surprise would be; they wouldn t have had the hope and expectation of the optimists and the joy it would bring them to see Jesus amongst them. Instead the middle group would have been saying either I told you so or about time too In this plan you ll see a number of LA s and I have no doubt that the middle group will look to blame everyone else. That is not a Christian response of graciousness and generosity. When Jesus got into the boat everyone was greeted by him. Some will see the LA s as opportunities to do differently and look for Gods direction. The pessimists will probably want to work harder but may begin to realise the need to row in a different direction. Where are you in the boat at the moment? My prayer is that you will hold a position of graciousness, not seeking to apportion blame, but seeking to row in Gods direction and seeking the hope only he can offer to us all. As we enter we look to the cross and it calls us to make s decision for Christ; yes, no and not bothered. It is this decision which should lead us forward and it is this decision which should make the difference to our lives. Pray, read scripture, have fellowship and be the blessing God wants us all to be. Rev d Mike 1002
