SENTENCE A virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and his name shall be called Emmanuel: God with us. At High Mass, the choir sings an Advent introit O Emmanuel, our King and Lawgiver, the Desire of all nations, and their Salvation: Come and save us, O Lord, our God. COLLECT Gracious God, you chose the virgin Mary, by your grace, to be the mother of our Lord and Saviour: so fill us with your grace, that with her we may rejoice in your salvation, and in all things embrace your will; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. FIRST Reading Isaiah The Lord spoke to Ahaz, saying, Ask a sign of the Lord your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven. But Ahaz said, I will not ask, and I will not put the Lordto the test. Then Isaiah said: Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary mortals, that you weary my God also? Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Look, the young woman is with child and shall bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel. He shall eat curds and honey by the time he knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good. For before Mass Readings Please use these readings in conjunction with the coloured service booklet. Second reading Romans Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy scriptures, the gospel concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh and was declared to be Son of God with power according to the spirit of holiness by resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord. Through Christ we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles for the sake of his name, including yourselves who are called to belong to Jesus Christ, To all God s beloved in Rome, who are called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. For the word of the Lord, Thanks be to God. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Alleluia. A virgin will give birth to a son; his name will be Emmanuel: God with us. Alleluia! 4 Mass Readings Gospel Matthew The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ. The birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly. But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins. All this took place to fulfil what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet: Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel, which means, God is with us. When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took her as his wife, but had no marital relations with her until she had borne a son; and he named him Jesus. This is the gospel of the Lord Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ. OFFERTORY SENTENCE Lord, may the power of the Spirit, which sanctified Mary the mother of your Son, make holy the gifts which we place upon this altar. COMMUNION SENTENCE The virgin is with child: and shall bear a son and shall call him Emmanuel. Organ Recital Today, Sunday 18 December, our Organ Scholar, Joshua Ryan, will be giving an organ recital at St Mary s Cathedral at 4pm. The recital will feature Olivier Messiaen s La Nativité du Seigneur. Entry is free. Flowers Parishioners are able to make a contribution towards the cost of flowers in memory of a loved one or as a thank-offering. Betsy Roberts (our flower convenor) is always pleased to hear from parishioners who would like to make a contribution to the flower fund. However, if you would like to make a contribution towards Christmas flowers, please contact the Parish Office or speak directly with Betsy ( ) as soon as possible. From the Wardens The wardens request that anyone with first aid or medical training please contact the parish office. This information will only be used to request assistance in the event of a medical emergency. Also they request that anyone with a RSA (Responsible Service of Alcohol) accreditation please contact the office, for assistance during parish functions. Asylum Seekers Centre Food Bank Donations Thank you for your continued generous response to the Food Bank appeal. Last 6 SUNDAY NOTICES financial year the Food Bank gave away 17,700 bags of groceries, so all donations of food and other grocery items are much appreciated. However, if you are finding it difficult to bring heavier or bulky items, especially if travelling to CCSL by public transport, the ASC is happy to receive supermarket gift cards. These are used to buy high demand items such as milk, rice, oil, tinned fish and nappies. If you would prefer to donate this way, please place a gift card in an envelope marked ASC Food Bank and place it in the collection plate Parish Retreat Weekend We are delighted to announce that the Revd Catherine Eaton will be leading us on retreat from Friday 6 - Sunday 8 October The setting for the retreat will be the beautiful lakeside setting of St Joseph s Conference Centre, Kincumber (on the Central Coast). Mthr Catherine has recently served as Canon-in-Residence at St Saviour s Cathedral, Goulburn, but spent most of her ordained ministry in the Diocese of Melbourne. Having retired to the Southern Highlands, Mthr Catherine has become involved in the Community of St Gabriel, our congregation in the Highlands. As places at the retreat will be limited, please mark these dates in your diary now, and please speak to Ann Bergman or Fr Daniel if you would like more information. St Laurence House - Save the Date A big event fund raiser for St Laurence House will be held on Thursday 23 February 2017, 6.30pm, at St Paul s College, Sydney University. Join us for cocktails, an address by a high profile identity, and more. Tickets and more details in January. Donations of Clothes for our Cana Shelter Thank you for donations to date. It would appreciated if no more donations are made for the time being. We only have limited storage; we have more than enough clothing for the moment. In the future, please would you always check with Lyn Bannerman ( ) before donating. May we also plead that you carefully select what you donate in the future. Guiding principles include: give only clothes or footwear that you would be prepared to wear yourself, as we respect the dignity of our men. For example, items that are clean and not badly worn; nothing that is stained, worn or frayed. Only clothes suitable for men living on the street: socks, underwear, tracksuits, tee shirts, sweaters, and very casual shoes. We do not want business suits and shirts (short or long sleeves), sports pants, brogues or any women s clothing. Thank you everyone for your help.
