3 SENTENCE Jeremiah This is the covenant I will make with them, says the Lord God: I will put my law within them, and I will write on their hearts; and I will be their God and they shall be my people. COLLECT O God, our Redeemer, in our weakness we have failed to be your messengers of forgiveness and hope: renew us by your Holy Spirit, that we may follow your commands and proclaim your reign of love; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. FIRST READING Jeremiah The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the Lord. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. No longer shall they teach one another, or say to Verses of the psalm are read alternately by a single reader and the congregation. A pause is observed at the colon for reflection. At Solemn High Mass, the choir sings the psalm. PSALM How shall the young keep their path pure: unless they hold to your word? 10. I have sought you with my whole heart: let me not stray from your commandments. 11. I have treasured your words in my heart: that I might not sin against you. 12. Blessed are you, Lord God: O teach me your statutes. 13. With my lips I have been telling: all the judgements of your mouth; 14. And I find more joy in the way of your commands: than in all manner of riches. 15. I will meditate on your precepts: and give heed to your ways; 16. 4 SECOND READING Hebrews Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed by the one who said to him, You are my Son, today I have begotten you ; as he says also in another place, You are a priest for ever, according to the order of Melchizedek. In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, having been designated by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek. About this we have much to say that is hard to explain, since you have become dull in understanding. For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic elements of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food; for everyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is unskilled in the word of righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, for those whose faculties have been trained by practice to distinguish good from evil. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks. They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, Sir, we wish to see Jesus. Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. Jesus answered them, The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Those who

5 love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honour. Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say Father, save me from this hour? No, it is for this reason that I have come to this hour. Father, glorify your name. Then a voice came from heaven, I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again. The crowd standing there heard it and said that it was thunder. Others said, An angel has spoken to him. Jesus answered, This voice has come for your sake, not for mine. Now is the judgement of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all MASS READINGS people to myself. He said this to indicate the kind of death he was to die. This is the gospel of the Lord, Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. 6 Visiting Choir We welcome the Cathedral Singers and their director, Jim Abraham to Christ Church St Laurence this evening. The Cathedral Singers are singing Evensong for us today as our own choir will be involved in the Lenten concert this afternoon. Mass Setting The music scores for today s High Mass setting Short Communion Service in the Phrygian Mode by Charles Wood were given in loving memory of Barbara Johnston. If you would like to make a similar gesture, please make your wishes known to the Director of Music. Chrism Eucharist Christ Church St Laurence is hosting this year s Chrism Eucharist (with the Renewal of Ministerial Commitment) at 11am Wednesday in Holy Week (28 March). Bishop Michael Stead will be the celebrant. We will also welcome clergy and laity from a number of other parishes. Lunch will follow the service in the Parish Hall. Please RSVP (for catering purposes) to office@ccsl.org.au. Maundy Thursday Parishioners are encouraged to put their names on the list at the back of the Church if they are able to participate in the Watch of the Passion taking place during the night of Maundy Thursday (a security guard will be in attendance). Lenten Project Our Lenten Project this year is in support of ABM s Zambia: Integrated Gender Project. The project focuses on building the capacity, especially of vulnerable women via business/ entrepreneurship and leadership skills to enable them to achieve household food security, while building their capacities to take up leadership roles in advocating for their rights. A reminder that there are tax deductible donation envelopes available at the back of the church. Gregorian Vespers On Saturday 14 April at 5.30pm, Evening Prayer will take the form of Sung Vespers to Gregorian Tones. The setting is Vespers of the Blessed Sacrament. Meditation Group The Meditation Group will not be meeting on 26 March (Holy Week), 2 April (Easter Monday) or 9 April (Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary). Multicoloured or Monochrome? On Saturday 24 March, Fr Max Wood, Rector of St Luke s, Mosman, is giving a lecture on the different perspectives on understanding the significance of Jesus death on the cross. The lecture commences at 3pm at St Luke s, corner of Ourimbah Rd and Heydon Street, Mosman. All welcome.
