3 At Solemn High Mass (10.30am), Lift High the Cross is the processional hymn LIFT HIGH THE CROSS CRUCIFER Sydney Hugo Nicholson Lift high the cross, the love of Christ proclaim till all the world adore his sacred name. 1. Come, people, follow where our captain trod, our King victorious, Christ the Son of God: 2. Led on their way by this triumphant sign, the hosts of God in conquering ranks combine: 3. Each newborn soldier of the Crucified bears on his brow the seal of him who died: 4. For thy blest cross which doth for us atone, creation s praises rise before thy throne. 5. From north and south, from east and west they raise in growing unison their song of praise: 6. O Lord, once lifted on the glorious tree, as thou hast promised, draw men unto thee: 7. From farthest regions let them homage bring, and on his cross adore their Saviour King: Michael Robert Newbolt based on George William Kitchin Descant (at 10.30am): Darke SENTENCE John Peace be with you, says the Lord. As the Father has sent me, so I send you. MASS READINGS Please use these readings in conjunction with the coloured service booklet. Breakfast is served after the 7.30am Eucharist today. Refreshments are served after the 9.00am Sung Eucharist and the 10.30am Solemn High Mass, all in the Parish Hall. All are welcome. If you are a visitor please ask a sidesperson for directions. COLLECT Risen Christ, whose absence leaves us in despair but whose presence is overwhelming: breathe on us with your abundant life, that where we cannot see we may have the courage to believe that we may be raised with you. Amen. FIRST READING Acts The whole group of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one claimed private ownership of any possessions, but everything they owned was held in common. With great power the apostles gave their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all. There was not a needy person among them, for as many as owned lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold. They laid it at the apostles feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need. There was a Levite, a native of Cyprus, Joseph, to whom the Apostles gave the name Barnabas (which means son of encouragement ) He sold a field that belonged to him, then brought the money, and laid it at the apostles feet. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Verses of the psalm are read alternately by a single reader and the congregation. A pause is observed at the colon for reflection. At Solemn High Mass, the choir sings the psalm. Railway Square, Sydney 3

4 PSALM Behold how good and how lovely it is: when families live together in unity. 2. It is fragrant as oil upon the head, that runs down over the beard: fragrant as oil upon the beard of Aaron, that ran down over the collar of his robe. 3. It is like a dew of Hermon: like the dew that falls upon the hill of Zion. 4. For there the Lord has commanded his blessing: which is life for evermore. SECOND READING 1 John We declare to you what was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked at and touched with our hands, concerning the word of life this life was revealed, and we have seen it and testify to it, and declare to you the eternal life that was with the Father and was revealed to us we declare to you what we have seen and heard so that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. We are writing these things so that our joy may be complete. This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light and in him there is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with him while we are walking in darkness, we lie and do not do what is true; but if we walk in the light as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all 4 MASS READINGS unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and he is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Alleluia. You believe in me, Thomas, because you have seen me; Happy those who have not seen me but still believe! Alleluia. Railway Square, Sydney GOSPEL John The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. It was evening on the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, Peace be with you. After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you. When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained. But Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, We

5 have seen the Lord. But he said to them, Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe. A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, Peace be with you. Then he said to Thomas, Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe. Thomas answered him, My Lord and my God! Jesus said to him, Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe. Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this MASS READINGS COMMUNION MOTET Now the green blade riseth Simon Lindley (b. 1948) Now the green blade riseth from the buried grain, Wheat that in the dark earth many days has lain; Love lives again, that with the dead has been: Love is come again, like wheat that springeth green. In the grave they laid him, love whom men had slain, Thinking that never he would wake again. Laid in the earth like grain that sleeps unseen: Love is come again, like wheat that springeth green, Forth he came at Easter, like the risen grain, He that for three days in the grave had lain. Quick from the dead my risen Lord is seen: Love is come again, like wheat that springeth green. When our hearts are wintry, grieving, or in pain, Thy touch can call us back to life again; Fields of our hearts that dead and bare have been: Love is come again, like wheat that springeth green. book. But these are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name. This is the gospel of the Lord, Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. OFFERTORY SENTENCE Praise the Lord, O my soul: while I live will I praise the Lord. While I have any being, I will sing praises to my God. COMMUNION SENTENCE Jesus said to Thomas: Put your hand here and see the place of the nails. Doubt no longer but believe, Alleluia. Railway Square, Sydney 5

6 Thank You We express our thanks to everyone who contributed to the splendid Holy Week liturgies. It was a joy to be able to welcome so many visitors to the church during Holy Week, and to offer such splendid liturgy to the glory of God. In addition to the superb musical contribution of our resident choristers and organists, we thank Stephen Bydder and David Tagg for playing the organ so beautifully during Holy Week. Preserving our Heritage Restoration Appeal Launch Our Restoration Appeal to support the planned renovation of the church interior will be launched this evening following Evensong. The guest speaker will be Jean Wahl, of Paul Davies Architects, our heritage architects for the restoration. Jean was a lead architect of the highly successful Kensington Street precinct at Central Park, Broadway. The magnificent worship associated with the parish has only been possible because of the generosity and vision of previous generations. As we continue to provide a place of prayerfulness, peace and acceptance in our community, this project will ensure the continuing reflection of the beauty of holiness in the Anglican worship of Christ Church St Laurence. All are welcome at the launch. Wine and cheese will be provided (no RSVP necessary). The Annunciation Tomorrow we celebrate the Feast of the Annunciation to the Blessed Virgin Mary (transferred from the 25 March). Join us at 6pm for a Procession and Solemn High Mass. Meditation Group The Meditation Group will not be meeting 9 April (owing to the Feast of the Annunciation to the Blessed Virgin Mary). SUNDAY NOTICES Gregorian Vespers On Saturday 14 April at 5.30pm, Evening Prayer will take the form of Sung Vespers to Gregorian Tones. The setting is Vespers of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Anyone is welcome to sing the service (wearing black concert attire; choir robes are not worn). For more information contact the Director of Music, Neil McEwan, via at n.mcewan@ccsl. org.au. Organ Recitals This Thursday 12 April Joshua Ryan, our Organ Scholar, will be playing at St. Andrew s Cathedral from 1.10pm to 1.40pm. All welcome. $5 admission. At 2pm next Sunday there will be an organ recital at CCSL given by Nico Tjoelker (Organ Scholar, St. Stephen s Macquarie Street Sydney). Entry is by note donation. Followed by afternoon tea. Florist Masterclass On Friday 13 April, Martin O Loughlin, a talented florist, will be running a Floristry Masterclass in the church.
