10 ABOUT OUR SERVICE TODAY MUSIC NOTES Our music for Pentecost Sunday comes from multiple traditions. The service begins with the choral prelude Komm Heiliger Geist (Come Holy Spirit) as set by the North German Baroque composer Dietrich Buxtehude (c ). Published in 1524, the chorale s text was written by Martin Luther and set to an adaptation of the Gregorian chant Veni Sancte Spiritus. For the introit, the choir sings the 9 th century Gregorian chant Veni Creator Spiritus accompanied by handbells. Herbert Howells set the anthem My Eyes for Beauty Pine to a text by Robert Bridges in Its poignant text reminds us that the celestial fire of Pentecost is rooted in heavenly Love. Two works by the 20 th century French composer Maurice Duruflé emphasize the peace and tranquility of the Spirit: his motet Ubi caritas and Scherzo, Op. 2 for organ. The choir concludes the choral season with Peter Lutkin s famous benediction, The Lord Bless You and Keep You. We thank all of our dedicated singers for another wonderful year of music and worship. OUR LAY WORSHIP LEADER TODAY is Orene Anthony who joined the Covenant community in Along with Mallory, Orene has participated in the Race for the Cure walk-a-thon, served as a Deacon and became an EfM grad. Currently she is a member of the Black History Committee, assists with Sunday School, and serves as a Lay Worship Leader. Her interests include exploring ways that not only appreciate but also celebrate our differences. Lay Worship Leaders write their prayers. If you would like to become a lay worship leader, please contact Gale Bromelmeier at or at galebrom@aol.com. CELEBRATING OUR CONFIRMANDS Today we celebrate with our Confirmation Class the end of a journey they spent together for ten months! They made the commitment to meet monthly with our pastors as well as with their mentors to explore their faith and learn about what it means to become a Presbyterian. At the May Session meeting they shared their impressive Statements of Faith and were accepted into the membership of the Church of the Covenant. Today we confirm and commission them and welcome them into the membership of our church. So presenting to you our Confirmands and their Mentors! Donald Goins/mentor Hugh Burtner Jonathan Goins/mentor John Marsh Nicholas Graham/mentor Luther Moss Katherine Hagen/mentor Mary Anne Bromelmeier Thane Jones/mentor: Bob Ault Matthew Klein/mentor Tom Keys Kyle Langmack/mentor Jim Tomaszewski Naomi Marsh/mentor Michelle Miller Daniel Veenstra/mentor Bob Jefferis SOS: SUMMER OF STORIES continues today for children and youth from 10:15 until 11 am in the Living Room. Today Carol Roe will share her story with them. 8

11 THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH (USA) OBSERVES OPEN COMMUNION. All who confess their faith in Jesus Christ as Sovereign and Savior, and their children, are invited to partake. You are encouraged to use the time while the elements are being served for prayer and meditation. Please partake of the bread whenever it is appropriate for you; hold the cup so that we may partake together, symbolizing our unity in Christ. To symbolize our calling to minister to one another, as you pass the tray of cups to the person seated beside you, please say, May the Spirit of God be with you. As you are served, please respond, And with you also. The wine of communion is unfermented grape juice. ELDERS AND DEACONS SERVING COMMUNION TODAY are Erin Baker, Kathy Farkas, Theodis Fipps, Matthew Garrett, Kitty Jarjisian, Jim Mate, Ron Neill, Gene Papp, Jules Tryk, and Ann Williams. THE FLOWERS IN THE CHANCEL URN are given to the glory of God and in memory of Marvin Dress, whose birthday is June 9, by his son Henry Dress. USHERS TODAY are John Bromelmeier, Karen Burt, Martha Goble, Keith Kallay, and Suchi Nelson. Greeters are Stephanie and David Finkenthal. BELIEVING GOD CALLS US TO BE PEACEMAKERS, by Session action, we include in the Prayer of Thanksgiving, Intercession and Petition, once each month, specific concern for people affected by gun violence and addressing the evil of gun violence in our nation, marked by the tolling of the tower bell. THE 2014 PEACEMAKING OFFERING IS RECEIVED IN WORSHIP TODAY. The Peacemaking Offering gives us a concrete way of living and working in response to Christ s call to be peacemakers. Seventy-five percent of the offering funds the Peacemaking Program of our denomination, enabling us to bring International Peacemakers, share conferences and advocate for active non-violent solutions to conflicts, and equipping all Presbyterians to bear witness to ways we can live out our faith in the midst of the challenge of violence. The Outreach and Social Justice Committee has designated our portion of the 2014 Peacemaking Offering as a gift to the Grafton Community Service Program that provides opportunities for the inmates at the Grafton Reintegration Center to serve the larger community. The creation of teddy bears for Ohio Cops for Kids is one project the Covenant congregation has facilitated. Ohio Cops for Kids provides the teddy bears to police, firefighters and other first responders to give to children who have been involved in traumatic incidents. The teddy bears scattered in the sanctuary pews will be shared with children through Ohio Cops for Kids. Giving a Statement of Opportunity this morning is Jim Tomaszewski, a member of the Outreach and Social Justice Committee. An offering envelope is inserted in the bulletin for your use. 9
