531 West College Avenue, Jonesboro, AR November 2018 A Message from Fr. Joshua The Missive It has been a joyful last few weeks around here. Just a few days ago during the Shrimp Boil and Trunk-or-Treat, we literally hosted hundreds of people in our church. Through the hard-work of so many we showed this place to be vibrant, hospitable, and joyful--our true colors! Just a bit more than two weeks ago was my ordination. Nearly 40 of you all were able to come and celebrate with me and my family. And many of you came to St. Mark s to pray with for me and the church during this time of transition. When I processed into the Cathedral seeing so many familiar faces from all over the diocese a tremendous sense of peace overcame me. It truly is a joy to be able to share moments like that with you all and to be blessed to do ministry alongside you. This week we have both All Souls (Friday. Nov. 2 at 7pm) and All Saints on Sunday, Nov. 4. These are both special services, a time to remember and celebrate with the community of Saints. We will also welcome a new saint into our community. Haley Hubbard will be baptized during the service. Haley will be my first baptism as a new priest, and Haley s older brother has the distinction of being the Rev. Hannah Hooker s first baptism after she was ordained! The chance to celebrate both the ministry of the Table and the ministry of our Holy Water will make Sunday a truly special day for this church. Lastly, this Sunday I will do my second children s sermon during the 10am service. I will ask the children up to the altar for a discussion about the importance of baptism in our Church and then also ask them to stay near so they can get an up--close-and-personal view of baptism itself. We take the responsibility of involving and teaching our children in this church seriously! And by their involvement we too will learn about the ways of God. Fr. Joshua

All Souls' Requiem Although we will celebrate the Feast of All Saints this coming Sunday, the actual calendar date for All Saints is Nov 1. Friday, Nov 2, is the observation of All Souls day, an observance that the church created as an extension of the Feast of All Saints. Although saints are all persons who have died in fellowship with Christ, from the very earliest time, the word saint was most associated with persons of heroic sanctity. By the tenth century, it became customary to set aside another day on which the Church remembers the vast body of departed faithful who are not named saints and are not known to the wider church. This then became a day for particular remembrance of family members and friends. In keeping with this practice, we Friday night recall by name those who have been a part of our local church community who have died over the past year and those whose deaths have had particular meaning to those in our congregation. While our liturgy constantly reminds us that not even death can prevail over the love God, we are human and we mourn the loss that the death of a loved one leaves in our lives. Our culture today seems to discourage direct expression of grief. Even in our churches we are often told to remember only that our loved ones are happy now, and we should be too. We are expected to hide our feelings, keeping them private, and grieve in isolation. In Friday's liturgy, we are given permission to not only celebrate in the promise of eternal life in Christ, but to acknowledge our loss and our grief with the support of our worshiping community. A Requiem Mass is a eucharist offered for the repose of the soul or souls of one or more deceased persons. Over the last 1200 years, composers have written more than 2000 settings of music specifically for the Requiem liturgy. Often these compositions were the finest music ever written by the composer. The music of the liturgy helps draw us together in unity as a worshiping community and allows the liturgy to speak more fully to us. The music of the requiem, conceived by the composer and given life by the musicians, allows us to express and experience what we cannot put into words. Music allows the Holy Spirit to move in and through us in a way not possible otherwise. Remembering our loved ones who have died is a gift that helps us live with the reality of our loss. Please accept this gift as you celebrate and mourn with us here.
Most of us are familiar with the Paschal Triduum- -the three days from sundown on Maundy Thursday to sundown on Easter. What may not be as familiar to us today is the time that is sometimes called the Triduum of Death or as it is also known Allhallowtide, which encompasses Halloween, All Saints Day and All Souls Day. But what is a saint? And what does a saint have to do with Halloween? Broadly speaking, a saint is a person who believes in Jesus Christ and follows His teachings. Today, an official saint is a person who through their acts or their piety has been named a saint of the church. Think about St. Francis or St. Jude for this definition of an official saint. In the early days of the Christian church, many people were martyred for their faith as a result of aggressive persecution by the Roman Empire. As early as the fourth century, a feast of all martyrs was observed. Over the next three centuries, celebrations were held in observance of all martyrs and saints, and in the ninth century, Pope Gregory IV ordered the observance of All Saints Day on November 1. In medieval English, the word for saint was hallow, and thus the observance of All Saints was in the English-speaking world the observance of All Hallows. In pre-christian Celtic Britain, the feast of Samhain (sah-wen) was held near the end of October as the year transitioned from the time of light to the time of darkness. This night of transition was thought to be the time that the veil between this world and the next was the thinnest, allowing spirits to come back into our world. Early Christians appropriated the Celtic holiday as the vigil of All Hallows, or All Hallows Eve and retained some of the pre-christian ceremonies of protection from evil spirits. The name All Hallows Eve gradually became shortened to Halloween in much the same way as God be with you became shortened to goodbye. We now know the roots of Halloween (Oct 31) and All Saints Day (Nov 1), but what about All Souls Day? All Saints Day began as a day to commemorate those who were martyred for their faith, then expanded to encompass all named saints, a commemoration of the church triumphant in heaven. We look to the example of the saints, remember their faithfulness, and celebrate the eternal life they are already living. This is not a day of mourning, but a day of celebration remembering that in Christ s resurrection, we too shall be raised up to live in joy with Christ. While All Saints Day is set aside to celebrate the church triumphant and to commemorate all named saints, All Souls Day is the day that we remember ALL the saints, all the faithful departed, not just those officially recognized as saints by the Church. In the Anglican Church, of which the Episcopal Church is a member, this celebration is known as The Commemoration of the Faithful Departed and has over the last few centuries become a day to especially remember our own loved ones who have died before us. While All Saints Day is a day of celebration, All Souls Day is a day that we are allowed to remember those who have died, a day that we can mourn our loss of their presence in our lives. A day that although we know that they are with Christ in paradise, we here on Earth still mourn and suffer their loss. And there you have Allhallowtide, the triduum of death. We travel from All Hallows Eve with its roots in pleas to God for protection from any evil spirits or restless dead, to the celebration of All Saints Day, to All Souls Day and the peace that comes from mourning our dead in a Christian community where we are reminded that death is not the final word.
Shrimp Boil 2018 The Shrimp Boil has come and gone and it was a huge success. Although we don t Have an exact financial accounting at this point, we know that we served over 320 meals. But the true measure of success is not meals served, or monies raised, but the fellowship and fun that was evident on Shrimp Boil Saturday. The Weather was great, and with the patio doors open the band s music drifted through out the hall. I took just a quick survey to see that everyone, from the cooks to the servers to the people taking tickets, that fun was being held by all. So I want to take this opportunity to than the 70 people who volunteered to work on Saturday, those who sold tickets, and those who prayed for out success. Thank you very much. Our success is due to your efforts. In an effort to improve on what is already a successful event, I m asking anyone who worked on Saturday, and who has a suggestion on possible improvement to please me. My address is garylatanich@gmail.com. When we get a final accounting of how we did, I will let you know. If you have Shrimp Boil monies, please turn them into the office as soon as possible. And, if you still have a yard sign, please return it to the Narthex ASAP. Again, thanks for all of your efforts. Gary Latanich and Conley Ferguson
EYC AYE /2018 Jonesboro Community Thanksgiving Dinner Churches from all over Jonesboro come together each year to provide a meal to the hungry on Thanksgiving Day. Last year we served 1,825 total meals. Traditionally St. Mark s has contributed money to purchase cranberry sauce for this event, the cost to provide cranberry sauce is around $ We would love to do this again. If you would like to help with a donation, please make a note on the memo line of your check, or on your envelope for Community Thanksgiving Dinner This year makes # 19 for the Community Thanksgiving. It is a joint project with area churches and individual members of our community. Anyone who is hungry, homeless or hungry is welcome to have a full, traditional Thanksgiving meal, completely free. Last year about 1500 people attended, not including many who had theirs delivered since they weren't able to get there. St. Mark's has always given money to pay for the cranberry sauce. ECW has contributed, but anyone is welcome to give. Checks should be made out to 1st United Methodist Church with Community Thanksgiving on the memo line. Other ways to give are by donating desserts not requiring refrigeration, and by working to help serve the food, clear tables, and by delivering meals to shut-ins. Workers are encouraged to talk to our guests, sit at a table with them as time allows, and to just be friendly and respectful towards them. This dinner is held at St. Bernard's auditorium. Volunteers should be there before 10:00. Desserts may be delivered after 1:00 on Wednesday. Serving begins at 11:00 and goes until the food is all gone. Several members of our parish family have served in various ways over the years. I, personally, will tell you how meaningful this is to me. I am reminded just how much I have for which to be thankful. If you want to know more, please contact me any way you like. Susie Grommet esgrommet@yahoo.com
Children s offering For Our Children We are now inviting the children to take a more active role in the church s offering. We re asking our kids to bring a can of food or some other non-perishable item so that during the offertory they can bring the food to altar as an offering. We ll then donate the food to Helping Christian Ed News Our elementary Christian Education sessions are going smoothly. Through prayer, sharing scripture stories, and other activities children are learning that they are part of the community of St. Mark s and part of the family of God. We are thankful for how faithful parents have been in bringing their children to Wednesday Christian Education sessions and appreciate the folks who have volunteered to provide snacks. We are blessed to have Lydia Howard and Jessica McBride who have agreed to share their time and talents as catechist for this school year. Please remember to pray for God s blessing over St. Mark s Christian Education program and for those who step out in faith to volunteer as catechist. Please note, we will not have Christian Ed classes on Wednesday, November 21 st due to the Thanksgiving Holiday. Our annual Children s Christmas Pageant will be held in December. Please watch for more information about the pageant and please encourage your children to participate in the pageant. More information will follow as we get closer to that date. We encourage all school age children in grades K -6 to be active participants in St. Mark s Wednesday evening religious education program. For more information about our ministries for children contact Fr. Joshua or Rose Mary ( / rosemarylatanich@gmail). JUST A REMINDER! Children are encouraged to take a more active role during Sunday services. We are invited our kids to bring from home some type of canned food item or any other nonperishable item to bring up to the altar during the offertory. All donated items will benefit Helping Liturgy of the Word with Children: Liturgy of the Word with Children is celebrated at the 10:00am Sunday service and is aimed for children 4 years old through the fifth grade. Liturgy of the Word for Children provides an opportunity for children to participate in a liturgical worship service designed for them. Children experience worship through many of the same ways as adults do; they listen to the Sunday readings, sing, pray and practice church traditions. We are excited to announce that we have added several adults who have volunteered to serve as liturgy leaders in this ministry. Please keep Brandon Hayes, Lydia Howard, Whitney Lindley, Dana Moses, and Gail McDonald in your prayers as they prepare to serve St. Mark s parish.
Helping Neighbors Food Pantry The Helping Neighbors Food Pantry needs volunteers: Team of two to pick up from Aldi s on Saturday at 10:30am, 2 times per month. On the job training provided. Need to be able to lift 20 lbs. To help fill shifts when regular volunteers are out. It would be about two hours each week and likely two times per month. You would be called to see if your schedule allows for that time period. On the job training provided. We will match your abilities to a job that suits! Gary Latanich Thank you for supporting Helping Neighbors with your donations! You're doing a great job! Fall Festival/Treats from the Trunk / Thank You!!1 Thank you to everyone who helped make St. Mark s Fall Festival festivities so successful. We had a great turn out. It was awesome to see the adults dressed in costume and to see the creative ways folks decorated the trunks of their vehicles. Kids had a great time Trunk or Treating from St. Mark s parking and playing the games set up in the courtyard. EYC did a great job of creating their haunted house and organizing the games the kids played. I appreciate everyone who made Trunk or Treat a memorable evening for the little princess and superheroes who participated in Fall Festival. I wish to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who stepped up to help and who supported this special event. Without the help and support of our families and parishioners this event could not be possible. A big THANK YOU to Todd Wilcox, Lydia Howard, Katie Wren, Father Joshua, and Keisha Dunavan for helping set up and clean up. Also to Gary Latanich for sharing his grilling skills to grill over 200 hot dogs. May everyone be blessed richly for the good you do for others.
