1 The Anchor Published Monthly by St. Clement s Episcopal Church Diocese of Northern California A Veteran Friendly Congregation Visit us on the web at saint-clements.com 2376 Zinfandel Dr. Rancho Cordova, Ca November 2016 NOVEMBER 6, 2016 TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST (C): ALL SAINTS DAY All Saints Day, celebrated November 1 or the nearest Sunday afterward, is characterized by the Book of Common Prayer (BCP) as a Principal Feast, taking precedence over any other day or observance (BCP 15). The day is set aside to remember and commend the saints of God, especially those who are not recognized at other points in the church year. According to Holy Women, Holy Men, in the tenth century, it became customary to recognize on a single day that vast body of the faithful who, though no less members of the company of the redeemed, are unknown in the wider fellowship of the Church (Holy Women, Holy Men, 664). Over time, the day became associated with special remembrances of an individual s family and friends. While several churches abandoned the commemoration during the Reformation, the Feast of All Saints was retained on the Anglican liturgical calendar. All Saints Day began to assume the role of general commemoration of the dead: all Christians, past and present; all saints, known and unknown. Because of the day s association with the remembrance for the dead, many churches publish a necrology. This reading of the names of the congregation s faithful departed may include prayers on their behalf. Such prayers are appropriate, as the Catechism reminds us, because we still hold [our departed] in our love, and because we trust that in God s presence those who have chosen to serve him will grow in his love, until they see him as he is (BCP 862). The Book of Common Prayer recommends All Saints Day as one of the four holy days especially appropriate for the administration of Holy Baptism (Holy Women, Holy Men, 662). This recommendation strives to make clear themes of newness of life, our membership in the communion of saints. Finally, the day is often characterized by joyful hymns, including such favorites as For All the Saints, Who Are These Like Stars Appearing, and I Sing a Song of the Saints of God. These hymns share motifs of rest, fellowship, and continued, joyful service to God salient indeed on this day, as we remember those of dazzling brightness, those in God s own truth arrayed, clad in robes of purest whiteness, robes whose luster ne er shall fade! Collect Almighty God, you have knit together your elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of your Son Christ our Lord: Give us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those ineffable joys that you have prepared for those who truly love you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen. Copyright 2016 The Episcopal Church
2 Notes from the October Vestry Meeting Janelle Fallan, Senior Warden Much has been going on just since the October 9 Vestry meeting. We are blessed to have so many good and faithful servants at St. Clement s. Terry Sandhoff did a masterful job leading the congregation in thinking about the future on October 23. Although the meeting had been called by The Rev. Canon Andrea MacMillin, she was delayed and Terry took over, leading us through thoughts about our ministries. So many ways you all want to reach out, from veterans and the homeless to Bible studies and teaching reading. And where would we be without our choir and Ukupalians! The Profile Committee (Pam Quarles, Terry Sandhoff, Bill Murray, Deb Honeycutt, Denise Smith, Fr. Dave) appreciates all the effort of the participants. The Stewardship Committee (Chris Wash, Terry Sandhoff, Sharon Burke- Polana, Deb Honeycutt) is working on presenting budget alternatives to the congregation. We know people don t give to budgets, they give to programs. And yet, you all understand that without a budget, our ability to carry out programs would be very limited. In a nutshell, this is what the Budget Committee has come up with: To hire a full-time rector starting in June 2017 would take a budget of about $129,500 in 2017 and $148,000 in To continue as we are, with a priest-in-charge working 20 hours a week, calls for an annual budget of about $119,000. A three-quarter time priest is also a possibility, with budget numbers somewhere in between. Fr. Dave will be with us for the first five months of 2017, so numbers for next year are based on 5 months of status quo, and then 7 months of where the Holy Spirit leads us. The Stewardship Ingathering is planned for December 4. In other Vestry news: Father Dave is heading to Chipulukusu, Zambia, to help his daughter build houses for Habitat for Humanity. Fr. Jimi will be our supply priest in his absence. We will all pray for a productive time in Chipulukusu for Father Dave and safe travels for him and his daughter. Retired clergy from the area met recently at St. Clement s, which gave us the opportunity to show off the renovations. 4 St. Clement s Capital Campaign is Ongoing In 2013 we began our Capital Campaign to continue to pay off the loan from the Diocese for our home improvement project. At the time (2013) we owed $150, As of April that debt is down to just $11, If you weren t a member then or were unable to participate in 2013, it is not too late to make a commitment now as part of our Celebrating Our Blessings: Discovering New Treasurers Stewardship campaign. There are pledge envelopes for the Capital Campaign on the table in the Narthex. Your contribution would instantly reduce the total amount and the interest payment. 4

6 The Sacramento Choral Society will be perfor ming its annual Home for the Holidays Christmas concert on Saturday, December 10 at the Memorial Auditorium. There will be two performances, a matinee at 2 pm and an evening performance at 7:30 pm. This Sacramento holiday tradition will guarantee merriment with full orchestra, candlelit procession and audience sing along. Advance discount tickets can be ordered through Len Honeycutt for either performance. Tickets range from $30, $35, and $45. Guest singers will include the Sacramento Children s Chorus. Please contact Len Honeycutt ( ) for further information. Hi Everyone Capital Christian Center is presenting its 60th anniversary Singing Christmas Tree performance this year. I already have Sunday, December 4 at 7 pm seating at Row J6 (Balcony Yellow $5), purchased at the CCC box office on Micron Avenue. It is a very good view of the stage show. Does anyone want to join me at that performance time?? (Our Ukupalian St. Nicholas party is on Friday, Dec. 9). Let me know soon because balcony tickets are selling quickly, and group seating may be limited now. If you decide on the following Saturday, Dec 10th or Sunday, Dec. 11, the prices will be at Yellow $12, instead of Family price. Of course Senior prices are discounted at the 1 pm and 3 pm shows, but I am not available because of my River City Ukulele Orchestra commitments. Do not order tickets by mail or phone because of courtesy charges of $1.25 per ticket. Jennifer Yee Pastoral Needs If you have a need for a pastoral visit, please use the link on Dr David's profile on the church website, send an to: pastor@saint-clements.org, or call him directly at: Now that Fr Bridges is no longer here, it's even more important that "the other Fr David" knows about any pastoral needs you may have. Please feel free to contact him! Help wanted! St. Clement s needs a new liaison for the River City Food Bank. This is not very time-consuming, but it does require a regular commitment. The liaison takes our donations to the Food Bank at th Street, Sacramento. You would also plan an occasional special drive like diapers or peanut butter, check with staff at the Food Bank to see what their greatest current needs are, and prepare announcements for the Anchor Lite and Anchor. Please let Fr. Dave, Janelle Fallan or Pam Quarles know if you are interested. The job doesn t pay, but the benefits are heavenly. Thank you! Great Greens By Dorothy Lecel The St Francis produce market is open from 10 to 11 every Tuesday, the selection varies by what is most abundant so the variety is really good. They will also accept special requests. The prices are amazing and while they call themselves a senior market all are welcome. Please check it out, I think you will be pleased. Pet Help If you would like to help support the Pet Food Assistance Program at the Sacramento County Animal Shelter, please bring non-perishable dog or cat food to church and Dorothy LeCel has volunteered to deliver the donations to the shelter. Please see Dorothy for details. 6
