An officiant is anyone, clergy or lay, who presides at a Daily Office service such as Morning Prayer or Compline, or a special service such as Taize. Celebrant: People: Allelluia. Christ is risen. The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia. The people standing, the Celebrant says Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Collect for Purity is an introduction that summarizes why we come to worship, that in our praise, God might cleanse us.

THE COLLECT Sixth Sunday of Easter BCP 225 O God, you have prepared for those who love you such good things as surpass our understanding: Pour into our hearts such love towards you, that we, loving you in all things and above all things, may obtain your promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. 3 Instruction Part 1 THE LESSONS FIRST LESSON A Reading from Acts 17:22-31 Paul stood in front of the Areopagus and said, Athenians, I see how extremely religious you are in every way. For as I went through the city and looked carefully at the objects of your worship, I found among them an altar with the inscription, To an unknown god. What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you. The God who made the world and everything in it, he who is Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in shrines made by human hands, nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mortals life and breath and all things. From one ancestor he made all nations to inhabit the whole earth, and he allotted the times of their existence and the boundaries of the places where they would live, so that they would search for God and perhaps grope for him and find him though indeed he is not far from each one of us. For In him we live and move and have our being ; as even some of your own poets have said, For we too are his offspring. Since we are God s offspring, we ought not to think that the deity is like gold, or silver, or stone, an image formed by the art and imagination of mortals. While God has overlooked the times of human ignorance, now he commands all people everywhere to repent, because he has fixed a day on which he will have the world judged in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed, and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead. SECOND LESSON A Reading from I Peter 3:13-22 Now who will harm you if you are eager to do what is good? But even if you do suffer for doing what is right, you are blessed. Do not fear what they fear, and do not be intimidated, but in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord. Always be ready to make your defense to anyone who demands from you an accounting for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and reverence. Keep your conscience clear, so that, when you are maligned, those who abuse you for your good conduct in Christ may be put to shame. For it is better to suffer for doing good, if suffering should be God's will, than to suffer for doing evil. For Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, in order to bring you to God. He was put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit, in which also he went and made a proclamation to

The music that follows the second reading is referred to as the Sequence Hymn or Gradual, and always accompanies the Gospel reading. In the earliest rites, it was always a sung Alleluia like we have today. THE GOSPEL John 14:15-21 Celebrant The Holy Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ According to John. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. Jesus said, If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever. This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you. I will not leave you orphaned; I am coming to you. In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me; because I live, you also will live. On that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. They who have my commandments and keep them are those who love me; and those who

Hannah Hooker NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. The Nicene Creed is the essential of our faith. It is the starting point, the jumping off point, from which we ask questions and talk about what we believe. The Early Church wrestled with the same questions about Jesus and his relationship with God and the Spirit that we have today.

7 We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Prayers of the People Form VI The Leader and People pray responsively In peace, we pray to you, Lord God. Silence For all people in their daily life and work; For our families, friends, and neighbors, and for those who are alone. For this community, the nation, and the world; For all who work for justice, freedom, and peace. For the just and proper use of your creation; For the victims of hunger, fear, injustice, and oppression. For all who are in danger, sorrow, or any kind of trouble; For those who minister to the sick, the friendless, and the needy. For the peace and unity of the Church of God; For all who proclaim the Gospel, and all who seek the Truth. For Michael. our Presiding Bishop, and Larry our Bishop; and for all bishops and other ministers; For all who serve God in his Church. For the special needs and concerns of this congregation. The forms of the Prayers of the People found in the prayer book were originally intended to be a guide, not fixed the way we use them today. Creative adaptations are encouraged, as long as they include the following: the Universal Church, the nation and those in authority, the welfare of the world, the concerns of the local community, those who suffer, and those who have died.

The earliest Christian communities greeted each other with a holy kiss. Today, the Peace is a way of acknowledging and showing gratitude that we have heard the Word and will now come to the table together. Often, the Confession of Sin follows the prayers, though typically not during the Easter season. It essentially replaced the private confession of the Roman Catholic Church, although private confession is recognized in our prayer book and encouraged if needed.

He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: The Sanctus (meaning holy ) is one of the oldest parts of the rite in which we join in the heavenly refrain. The Post- Sanctus describes the history of salvation, from creation to the Fall to the Incarnation to the Cross. At the Words of Institution, we follow Jesus instructions in the Upper Room the night he was arrested. In Greek, anamnesis, to remember, is to do over.

11 Celebrant and People Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Another ancient tradition, the Memorial Acclamation is our response to the Words of Institution. Remembering what he taught us, we will proclaim it. The Celebrant continues We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN. Epiclesis is the word for calling down the Holy Spirit to consecrate the bread and wine, making them the sacramental, though not literal, body and blood of Christ. The Celebrant then continues As our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray, The Lord s Prayer

EFM is a deep, guided theological study for lay people interested in creating a stronger Biblical and theological foundation for their ministry in their church and in the world ( EFM is a four year program that covers the Old Testament, the New Testament, Church history, and theology, but participants enroll in one year at a time. The cost for one year of EFM is $375. Scholarships will be available. If you are interested in enrolling in EFM

You may sign up and give your keys and donations in the Narthex before the 10am service. Adult volunteers will move the vehicles to washing station and put them back in their spots when they've been cleaned. Helping Neighbors Food Pantry week. Thank you for your gifts of $ 82 last Bicycle Blessing and Community Ride On June 11, Trinity Sunday, St. Mark's will celebrate bicycling in Jonesboro with a Blessing of the Bikes and a community ride. Any and all St. Mark's cyclists and their friends are welcome to bring their bicycles to church. They will be blessed after the 10am service, and immediately following, anyone who wants to may participate in a ride led by Bill Smith and Julie Kennedy-Hampton. More details on the route soon! Scholarships Incredible formation is happening at St. Mark's. We have six children attending Camp Mitchell this summer and an EFM class beginning this fall. But these programs are not cheap, and we want to ensure that everyone who wants to participate in the life of St. Mark's can do so regardless of financial situation. And so, we are creating a scholarship program. If you and your family would like to sponsor a youth for camp or a fellow parishioner a year of EFM, there are two ways to do so. First, full scholarships are $425 for camp or $375 for a year of EFM. You are also welcome to split a scholarship with a friend or family member, or contribute a partial scholarship, which is half the cost of the program. Checks may be made out to St. Mark's, and please reach out to Rev. Hannah if you have any questions.
