3 Hymn O gracious Light, Lord Jesus Christ blue The Hymnal 1982, hymn 25 Words: Greek, 3rd cent.; tr. F. Bland Tucker ( ); para. of O Gracious Light. Music: The Eighth Tune, Thomas Tallis (1505? 1585); adapt. Hymnal All rights reserved. Reprinted under OneLicense.net #A The Liturgy of the Word Collect of the Day The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. O God, whose Son Jesus is the good shepherd of your people: Grant that when we hear his voice we may know him who calls us each by name, and follow where he leads; who, with you and the Holy Spirit, lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. The Lessons All are seated. Meditative silence follows the readings. Reading: Acts 4:5-12 Lector The day after they had arrested Peter and John for teaching about Jesus and the resurrection, the rulers, elders, and scribes assembled in Jerusalem, with Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John, and Alexander, and all who were of the high-priestly family. When they had made the prisoners stand in their midst, they inquired, By what power or by what name did you do this? Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, Rulers of the people and elders, if we are questioned today because of a good deed done to someone who was sick and are asked how this man has been healed, let it be known to all of you, and to all the people of Israel, that this man is standing before you in good health by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead. This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders; it has become the cornerstone. There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among mortals by which we must be saved. Thanks be to God. page 3
4 Psalm 23 sing the verses in bold with the cantor Cantor The Lord is my shepherd; * I shall not be in want. All He makes me lie down in green pastures * and leads me be side still waters. He revives my soul * and guides me along right pathways for his Name s sake. Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I shall fear no evil; * for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You spread a table before me in the presence of those who trouble me; * you have anointed my head with oil, and my cup is running over. Surely your goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, * and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. Gospel Verse and Alleluias Standing, as able. The Cantor sings the Alleluias, which are then repeated by the congregation. I am the good shepherd, says the Lord; I know my sheep, and my sheep know me. The Holy Gospel: John 10:11-18 The Holy Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory to you, Lord Christ. Jesus said, I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. The hired hand, who is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away-- and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. The hired hand runs away because a hired hand does not care for the sheep. I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father. And I lay down my life for the sheep. I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd. For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life in order to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it up again. I have received this command from my Father. Praise to you, Lord Christ. Meditation All are seated. 9 APRIL 26, 2015 FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER THE FEAST OF CATHERINE OF SIENA On April 29 the church celebrates the Feast of Catherine of Siena, a fourteenth-century mystic and spiritual writer. Caterina Benincasa was born in Siena, Italy, in 1347 and experienced her first religious vision when she was only 6 years old. Holy Women, Holy Men (Church Publishing, 2010) describes how, as she was walking along the road one day, Catherine looked up and beheld our Lord seated in glory with St. Peter, St. Paul, and St. John and in her vision the Savior smiled on her and blessed her. Despite her family s objections, at the age of 16 she joined the Third Order of the Dominicans and spent her early life serving the poor and converting sinners, according to An Episcopal Dictionary of the Church: A User Friendly Reference for Episcopalians (Church Publishing, 2000). Catherine worked courageously to help the ill during the black plague and visited prisoners condemned to death. She also arbitrated feuds and attempted to help restore the schism in the church at that time between the popes in Rome and Avignon by writing letters to political leaders and traveling to plead for unification in person. Holy Women, Holy Men explains that, in Siena, opinion about Catherine was sharply divided as to whether she was a saint or a fanatic (p. 350), but she eventually won the full support from the Dominican Mother House. In Catherine wrote her famous, mystical Dialogue. She died in Rome on April 29, 1380, at the age of 33, and became a saint in 1461, canonized by Pope Pius II. Collect for Catherine of Siena Everlasting God, you so kindled the flame of holy love in the heart of blessed Catherine of Siena, as she meditated on the passion of your Son our Savior, that she devoted her life to the poor and the sick, and to the peace and unity of the Church: Grant that we also may share in the mystery of Christ s death, and rejoice in the revelation of his glory; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen ( Holy Women, Holy Men, p. 351). St. Catherine of Siena circa , oil on copper, courtesy of the Brooklyn Museum, New York City Copyright 2015 The Domestic and Foreign Missionary Society page 9

Hello, My Name Is We at Grace & Holy Trinity are friendly folks let s show our guests how friendly we really are and promote fellowship. Be sure to wear your nametag every Sunday. If you have lost or misplaced yours or have never received one, please legibly print your name on the Nametag Clipboard in the Tower entrance. We ll do our best to have one on the kiosk for you the very next Sunday. In the meantime, here are a few good reasons for wearing your nametag: Few people know everybody in church. Name tags help us to know people s names. Name tags invite conversation. It s easier to talk with others when you are on a first-name basis. Knowing names makes fellowship more personal. Nametags save embarrassment. We ve probably all called someone by the wrong name. Save someone that embarrassment by wearing your nametag. page 10
