The Last Sunday after the Epiphany February 11, & 10:15 a.m.

2 Collect of the Day O God, who before the passion of your only-begotten Son revealed his glory upon the holy mountain: Grant to us that we, beholding by faith the light of his countenance, may be strengthened to bear our cross, and be changed into his likeness from glory to glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. 2 Kings 2:1 12 When the Lord was about to take Elijah up to heaven by a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were on their way from Gilgal. Elijah said to Elisha, Stay here; for the Lord has sent me as far as Bethel. But Elisha said, As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you. So they went down to Bethel. The company of prophets who were in Bethel came out to Elisha, and said to him, Do you know that today the Lord will take your master away from you? And he said, Yes, I know; keep silent. Elijah said to him, Elisha, stay here; for the Lord has sent me to Jericho. But he said, As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you. So they came to Jericho. The company of prophets who were at Jericho drew near to Elisha, and said to him, Do you know that today the Lord will take your master away from you? And he answered, Yes, I know; be silent. Then Elijah said to him, Stay here; for the Lord has sent me to the Jordan. But he said, As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you. So the two of them went on. Fifty men of the company of prophets also went, and stood at some distance from them, as they both were standing by the Jordan. Then Elijah took his mantle and rolled it up, and struck the water; the water was parted to the one side and to the other, until the two of them crossed on dry ground. When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, Tell me what I may do for you, before I am taken from you. Elisha said, Please let me inherit a double share of your spirit. He responded, You have asked a hard thing; yet, if you see me as I am being taken from you, it will be granted you; if not, it will not. As they continued walking and talking, a chariot of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them, and Elijah ascended in a whirlwind into heaven. Elisha kept watching and crying out, Father, father! The chariots of Israel and its horsemen! But when he could no longer see him, he grasped his own clothes and tore them in two pieces. Psalm 50:1 6 8 a.m., said in unison; 10:15 a.m., sung by the choir. The Lord, the God of gods, has spoken; * he has called the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting. Out of Zion, perfect in its beauty, * God reveals himself in glory. Our God will come and will not keep silence; * before him there is a consuming flame, and round about him a raging storm. He calls the heavens and the earth from above * to witness the judgment of his people. Gather before me my loyal followers, * those who have made a covenant with me and sealed it with sacrifice." Let the heavens declare the rightness of his cause; * for God himself is judge. 2 Corinthians 4:3 6 Even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. For we do not proclaim ourselves; we proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselves as your slaves for Jesus sake. For it is the God who said, Let light shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. Mark 9:2 9 Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain apart, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no one on earth could bleach them. And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, who were talking with Jesus. Then Peter said to Jesus, Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah. He did not know what to say, for they were terrified. Then a cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud there came a voice, This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him! Suddenly when they looked around, they saw no one with them any more, but only Jesus. As they were coming down the mountain, he ordered them to tell no one about what they had seen, until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead. page 2 Cover art: Armando Alemdar Ara, Transfiguration of Jesus, oil on linen, 2004, private collection

Postcommunion Prayer Blessing Sending Hymn Ye watchers and ye holy ones Burying of the Alleluia Dismissal Voluntary Suite in D major A note on Burying the Alleluia Alleluia or Hallelujah is a transliteration of the Hebrew word expression, Praise the Lord. It is customary to omit the joyous expression of Alleluia from the Liturgy from Ash Wednesday through the Easter Vigil when all the church proclaims, Alleluia, Christ is Risen! Today, children at the Cathedral symbolically bury the Alleluia until our Easter celebrations. 8 Lent Resources Lent resources for adults and children are be available today in the Tower entry to assist you with your observance of a holy Lent. Additional resources are available for purchase in the Bookstore. Lent Workshop Next Sunday 11:30 a.m. Founders Hall Prepare for Lent by picking up Lent in Bag materials, adding to our Lenten mural and painting crosses to be used during Holy Week. Supplies will be provided and coffee hour refreshments will be available. Adult Forum Sundays in Lent February 18 March 18 9:15 a.m. Common Room Perennial Pilgrims: Making the Trip through Holy Week We are invited annually to hear and experience the story of the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus. You are invited to come and get ready for the journey during the Sundays of Lent. The travel log of Egeria, a woman who visited the Holy Land in the late fourth century, as well as the Book of Common Prayer will serve as guides for our preparation. We will use Egeria s writings, Scripture, and church tradition as springboards from which to understand our own experience of Palm Sunday, Holy Week, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Easter at the Cathedral. The question, What does this mean for us? will be a constant theme preparing and propelling us forward as people of faith. The goal of our time together is to share together the actual pilgrimage of Holy Week and Easter. This class will be led by Dean Peter DeVeau, assisted by others. Lenten Wednesday Evenings February 21 March 28 5:30 p.m. Contemplative Eucharist in the Nave 6 p.m. Simple Supper in Founders Hall 6:30-8 p.m. Learning Opportunities The Way: We invite you to join us for an adult faith formation experience for those seeking to deepen their faith, or know more about the Episcopal Church. The Way is for persons new to the church, those desiring to be baptized, confirmed or received into the Episcopal Church. Each evening includes a meal, a brief presentation, group Bible sharing and concludes with prayer. Please contact Marco Serrano, mserrano@kccathedral.org. The Creed for Today (Nicene or Apostles ): Each Sunday in worship we recite the Nicene Creed as an affirmation of our faith. Though formulated centuries ago, the Creed summarizes the fundamental beliefs we still consider essential today. This study will delineate those beliefs and explore how they are relevant for contemporary life. The class will be led by Dr. Bill Stancil, Professor of Theology and Religious Studies at Rockhurst University. Childcare is available for Wednesday evening Lenten programs. To make a reservation, contact childrensformation@kccathedral.org or ext Lent Madness In a takeoff of basketball s March Madness, Lent Madness is a fun, engaging way for people to learn about the Church s Calendar of Saints. Visit lentmadness.org to fill out your bracket for a chance to win the Golden Halo! Dean s Book for Lent The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning This year s book for Lent is practical. Downsizing at any age or time of transition can be cathartic and freeing. Not allowing possessions to own nor overwhelm us can challenge us and those who sift through our things after we die. Who will deal with our stuff when we are gone? Such practice has good foundation in biblical witness. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain that we can take nothing out. 1 Timothy 6:7 Noisy Offering March 18 8 & 10:15 a.m. We make a joyful noise to the Lord with our Noisy Offerings each year! Put a container on your kitchen counter or table, and save your coins to bring to church on March 18 for our Lenten Noisy Offering. The Cathedral s children will assist the ushers in collecting the coins in metal buckets, so we can hear the funds add up. Don t keep coins around? No problem. Quiet checks and cash are welcome, too. Palm Cross Workshop March 18 9 & 11:30 a.m. Founders Hall We make crosses out of palm leaves for distribution on Palm Sunday. Please bring your scissors. Someone will help if you ve never done it before! Extra palms are available to make additional crosses at home and return by Palm Sunday. Crosses are also given to St. Luke s Hospital and Hospice, and Bishop Spencer Place. Contact Janet Sweeting ( ext. 144 or jsweeting@ kccathedral.org) with questions. Easter Egg Hunt Candy Donations Needed Bring your donations of candy (individually wrapped, in small packages) to the box in the Tower during Lent. We ll stuff the eggs after the 10:15 a.m. service on Palm Sunday. page 10

Following the open space, the liturgy continues with the Litany of Penitence and Holy Communion. Labyrinth Available Labyrinth walk for private meditation is available in Founders Hall all day. A printed guide will be available in Founders Hall to assist you as you walk the labyrinth. The labyrinth is an ancient pattern found in many cultures around the world.
