Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral The Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ Christmas Day 2016 page 1

Welcome to all who gather to celebrate Christmas at Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral! May you know the peace and presence of Christ today and in the coming New Year. Taking Part At each Christmas service, Holy Eucharist, also known as Holy Communion, the Lord s Supper, the Mass and the Divine Liturgy is celebrated. All are welcome to come forward to take communion or to receive a blessing. Christmas Offering More than half of the Christmas offering is divided equally for local and global outreach: Sheffield Place, a treatment and transitional living program for homeless mothers and their children, sheffieldplace.org, and Maison de Naissance, a modern maternal health center supporting healthy mothers and healthy babies in Haiti, globalbirthinghomefoundation.org. Please be prayerful and generous in your giving. An envelope is provided for your offering. Secure offerings may also be made through the Cathedral website: kccathedral.org, or by scanning the QR code. A Place to Grow Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral is a Christian community within the Anglican tradition. We are committed to worshiping God, growing in grace, and in understanding faith and its connection to daily living. If you would like to learn more about formation for all ages, spiritual development, music programs, local and global outreach, and pastoral care, please visit our website: kccathedral.org. You are invited to fill out a welcome card found in the pews and at the Welcome Center. Place your card in the offering plate or hand it to an usher, greeter, or member of the clergy. You may also contact the Cathedral office through the website at any time or by telephone during business hours. You may also speak with someone in the congregation, or a member of the staff or clergy. Blessed Christmas and a Peaceful New Year! The people of Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral Restrooms are located inside the main entrance of Founders Hall (fully accessible), and up the grand staircase from the Tower entry. An additional restroom for those with special needs and for parents with young children is located off the hallway at the west end (back) of the Cathedral nave. Nursery Childcare is not available for this service so that staff may have time with their families. Children are welcome in church. Children's Formation and the Children's Choir are taking a break until January 8. Christmas Message from the Dean The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light, and those who lived in a land of deep darkness on them light has shined... Isaiah 9:2 Whenever gold leaf is applied to the illuminations of the Saint John s Bible it signifies Divine Presence. The depiction of the birth of Christ as told in Luke s gospel is resplendent in gold. This page from the Gospels and Acts of the Apostles is displayed to the right of the baptismal font at the front of the Cathedral during Christmas service. In this illumination that serves as cover page for the gospel of Luke, a great shaft of pure gold shines into the stable repurposed as a birthing room to illumine mother, child and the other humans and animals looking on in wonder. Angelic hosts also depicted in gold, hover in a line suggesting a cross at the top of the scene, foreshadowing the child s destiny. In Luke s telling of the story Christ comes into the world to bring good news to the poor, to proclaim release to the captives, recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord s favor. This word and work of Jesus is to show God s love chiefly in showing mercy and pity. This is the Divine Light that we come to sing and celebrate in this sacred place. We hear the angels say, Do not be afraid; for see I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. In a world where the poor and refugees cry out for relief, and where there is much to fear for the future this light shines to open our eyes and illumine our hearts. This is the gold that shines through us to welcome and care for those in any need or trouble and to do all we can to preserve God s creation for those who come after us. May the light of Christ shine in you at Christmas and in the New Year. Faithfully, Peter DeVeau Dean page 2

Amen. page 4

The Lessons All are seated. Meditative silence follows the readings. First Reading: Isaiah 52:7-10 Lector Lector Psalm 98, sung by the choir. How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of the messenger who announces peace, who brings good news, who announces salvation, who says to Zion, Your God reigns. Listen! Your sentinels lift up their voices, together they sing for joy; for in plain sight they see the return of the Lord to Zion. Break forth together into singing, you ruins of Jerusalem; for the Lord has comforted his people, he has redeemed Jerusalem. The Lord has bared his holy arm before the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Sing to the Lord a new song, * for he has done marvelous things. With his right hand and his holy arm * has he won for himself the victory. The Lord has made known his victory; * his righteousness has he openly shown in the sight of the nations. He remembers his mercy and faithfulness to the house of Israel, * and all the ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God. Shout with joy to the Lord, all you lands; * lift up your voice, rejoice, and sing. Sing to the Lord with the harp, * with the harp and the voice of song. With trumpets and the sound of the horn * shout with joy before the King, the Lord. Let the sea make a noise and all that is in it, * the lands and those who dwell therein. Let the rivers clap their hands, * and let the hills ring out with joy before the Lord, when he comes to judge the earth. In righteousness shall he judge the world * and the peoples with equity. page 5

Second Reading: Hebrews 1:1-4, (5-12) Lector Lector Long ago God spoke to our ancestors in many and various ways by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom he also created the worlds. He is the reflection of God s glory and the exact imprint of God s very being, and he sustains all things by his powerful word. When he had made purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs. [For to which of the angels did God ever say, Or again, You are my Son; today I have begotten you? I will be his Father, and he will be my Son? And again, when he brings the firstborn into the world, he says, Let all God s angels worship him. Of the angels he says, He makes his angels winds, and his servants flames of fire. But of the Son he says, And, Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, and the righteous scepter is the scepter of your kingdom. You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your companions. In the beginning, Lord, you founded the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands; they will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like clothing; like a cloak you will roll them up, and like clothing they will be changed. But you are the same, and your years will never end. ] The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. page 6

Gospel Hymn: Good Christian friends rejoice Please stand, as able. Words: John Mason Neale ( ), alt.; Music: In dulci jubilo, German carol, 14th cent.; harm. Charles Winfred Douglas ( ). All Rights Reserved. Reprinted under OneLicense.net #A The Holy Gospel: John 1:1-14 Deacon Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, Lord Christ. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him. He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father s only son, full of grace and truth. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. page 7

Sermon All are seated. page 8 The Reverend Canon Christy Dorn The Nicene Creed Please stand, as able. red Book of Common Prayer, page 358 We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Prayers of the Leader The Peace Presider O God, who is with us, Hear our prayer. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. The Holy Table is prepared for Eucharist. The Holy Communion All are seated. The congregation s offering is received. Sixty percent of the Christmas offering is to be divided equally for local and global outreach. Please see page 2 for a detailed description of the recipients. Please be prayerful and generous in your giving. An envelope is provided for your offering. Offerings may also be made through the Cathedral website: kccathedral.org or by scanning the QR code. Offertory Anthem: Summer in Winter Gloomy night embrac d the place Where Noble Infant lay; The Babe look d up and show d his face, In spite of darkness, it was day. It was the day, Sweet! and did rise Not from the east, but from thine eyes. We saw thee in thy balmy rest, Bright dawn of our eternal day! We saw thine eyes break from the East, In the Holy Nativity of our Lord by Richard Crashaw And chase the trembling shades away. We saw thee, and we bless d the sight, We saw thee, by thine own sweet light. Arlen Clarke Welcome, all wonders in one sight! Eternity shut in a span; Summer in winter; day in night; Heaven in earth, and God in man. Great little one, whose all-embracing birth Lifts earth to heaven, stoops heav n to earth. Alleluia.

Offertory Hymn: Sing, O sing, this blessed morn Please stand, as able. Sing, O sing, this blessèd morn, unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given, God Himself comes down from heaven. Refrain: Sing, O sing, this blessèd morn, Jesus Christ today is born. God comes down that we may rise, lifted by him to the skies; Christ is born for us that we born again in him may be. (Refrain) O renew us, Lord, we pray, with thy Spirit day by day, that we ever one may be with the Father and with thee. (Refrain) The Great Thanksgiving Eucharistic Prayer B red Book of Common Prayer, page 367 As a symbol of the church gathered in the fullness of its baptismal ministry, the deacon and a lay person stand at the Holy Table with the priest (and bishop, when present) for the Eucharistic Prayer. Presider It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Because you gave Jesus Christ, your only Son, to be born for us; who, by the mighty power of the Holy Spirit, was made perfect Man of the flesh of the Virgin Mary his mother; so that we might be delivered from the bondage of sin, and receive power to become your children. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: page 9

Presider All Presider We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Therefore, according to his command, O Father: We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory. We offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with Mary, the God-bearer, and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen. Lord s Prayer red Book of Common Prayer, page 364 Presider All Breaking of the Bread And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Music: Gerald R. Near (b. 1942). Copyright: 1985 by Aureole Editions, Dallas, Texas. All Rights Reserved. All those desiring a relationship with Christ are invited to come forward for Holy Communion or for a blessing. To take communion, receive the bread in your hands (for gluten-free bread cross your hands palms down). Drink the wine from the cup, or holding the bread in your hands, wait for the minister to dip the bread in the wine and place it onto your tongue. You may choose not to take the wine by crossing your hands over your chest. For a blessing, cross your hands over your chest. Postcommunion Prayer Please stand, as able. red Book of Common Prayer, page 365 All Christmas Blessing Presider Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen. May Christ, who by his Incarnation gathered into one things earthly and heavenly, fill you with his joy and peace; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you, and remain with you always.
