3 Versicles and Responses O Lord, open thou our lips. And our mouth shall show forth thy praise. O God, make speed to save us. O Lord, make haste to help us. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Praise ye the Lord. The Lord s Name be praised. Psalm 36:5-10 All are seated. Jeffrey Carter chant: John Goss Your love, O LORD, reaches to the heavens, * and your faithfulness to the clouds. Your righteousness is like the strong mountains, your justice like the great deep; * you save both man and beast, O LORD. How priceless is your love, O God! * your people take refuge under the shadow of your wings. They feast upon the abundance of your house; * you give them drink from the river of your delights. For with you is the well of life, * and in your light we see light. Continue your loving-kindness to those who know you, * and your favor to those who are true of heart. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be; world without end. Amen. First Lesson: Isaiah 62:1-5 For Zion s sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem s sake I will not rest, until her vindication shines out like the dawn, and her salvation like a burning torch. The nations shall see your vindication, and all the kings your glory; and you shall be called by a new name that the mouth of the LORD will give. You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the LORD, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God. You shall no more be termed Forsaken, and your land shall no more be termed Desolate; but you shall be called My Delight Is in Her, and your land Married; for the LORD delights in you, and your land shall be married. For as a young man marries a young woman, so shall your builder marry you, and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you. page 3

4 Magnificat (BCP page 65) in G Major All rise, as able. My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior. For he hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me, and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost * as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Charles Villiers Stanford Second Lesson: John 2:1-11 All are seated. On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, They have no wine. And Jesus said to her, Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come. His mother said to the servants, Do whatever he tells you. Now standing there were six stone water jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to them, Fill the jars with water. And they Nunc Dimittis (BCP page 66) in G Major All rise, as able. filled them up to the brim. He said to them, Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward. So they took it. When the steward tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the steward called the bridegroom and said to him, Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the inferior wine after the guests have become drunk. But you have kept the good wine until now. Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him. Charles Villiers Stanford Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word; For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people, To be a light to lighten the Gentiles, and to be the glory of thy people Israel. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost * as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. page 4

5 Apostles Creed, The choir and congregation chant the Creed. All I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty. From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Prayers The Lord be with you; And with thy spirit. Let us pray. Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. Lord s Prayer, The choir and congregation chant the Lord s Prayer, from the Book of Common Prayer All Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. Suffrages O Lord, show thy mercy upon us. And grant us thy salvation. O Lord, save the state. And mercifully hear us when we call upon thee. Endue thy ministers with righteousness. And make thy chosen people joyful. O Lord, save thy people. And bless thine inheritance. Give peace in our time, O Lord. Because there is none other that fighteth for us, but only thou, O Lord. O God, make clean our hearts within us. And take not thy Holy Spirit from us. Jeffrey Carter page 5

6 Collects Almighty Father, who inspired Simon Peter, first among the apostles, to confess Jesus as Messiah and Son of the living God: Keep your Church steadfast upon the rock of this faith, so that in unity and peace we may proclaim the one truth and follow the one Lord, our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed: Give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give, that our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments, and also that by thee, we, being defended from the fear of our enemies, may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen. Lighten our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord; and by thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of thy only Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen. Anthem: Laudate Dominum Text is Psalm 117 Joseph Goodman The Prayers All rise, as able. Prayer of St. Chrysostom All Almighty God, who hast given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication unto thee, and hast promised through thy wellbeloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name thou wilt be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, the desires and petitions of thy servants as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of thy truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. Amen. The Grace Sending of The Saint John s Bible Presider Presider People Dear friends, grace and peace to you, and welcome. 9 About The Saint John s Bible The Saint John s Bible is a seven volume illuminated manuscript of the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. It was commissioned by the monks of St. John s Abbey, Collegeville, MN, and was created at the opening of the 21st century. It is the first hand-copied and illuminated manuscript of the entire Bible produced since before the Reformation. The lively artwork or illuminations in The Saint John s Bible depict the Scripture story interpreted in light of contemporary culture. Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral is fortunate to be stewards of two exact copy volumes of The Saint John s Bible until the close of 2016, the Pentateuch (Genesis through Deuteronomy), and, the Gospels and Acts of the Apostles. We will use these books at worship, in Christian formation, for display to the public, and in ecumenical and educational ventures with the wider community. The Saint John s Bible exhibit is a gift to the Cathedral and Kansas City community, given in loving memory of the late Charles N. Pete Seidlitz. About the Covenant Since 1974 our two Cathedrals, Grace and Holy Trinity Episcopal Cathedral and the Roman Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception have shared in a covenant of mutual prayer and witness to the gospel of Jesus Christ in downtown Kansas City, Missouri. This covenant has been renewed twice, first in 1999 and again in The renewed covenant of 1999 calls for the sharing of our physical facilities and resources through programs and activities which build community, minister to social needs, and foster educational and spiritual development, and the creation of opportunities for mutual worship, celebration, study, and social activities. It is our pleasure at Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral to share in A Year with the Saint John s Bible with our brothers and sisters at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. On the eve of the Feast of the Confession of Saint Peter, which opens the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, we send the two copies of the Saint John s Bible entrusted to us, to The Immaculate Conception as a sign of the faith we share in Jesus Christ, and of the importance of the Scriptures in our life of prayer, teaching, and worship. The hand copied and illuminated Saint John s Bible was commissioned by the Roman Catholic Benedictine community at St. John s Abbey, Collegeville, Minnesota, as an enduring and ecumenical work for the New Millennium.
