Therefore it is said, "When he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men." (in saying, "He ascended," what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is he who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.) And his gifts were that some should be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ. Gospel Reading: The Gospel according to Matthew 4:12-17 At that time, Jesus heard that John had been arrested, He withdrew into Galilee; and leaving Nazareth He went and dwelt in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, toward the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles, the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned. Communion Ushering Reminder: All those who are prepared and wish to receive communion should wait to be ushered from their rows by a member of the Parish Council. Teaching : Today, Sunday, January 8, 2017, Fr. Anthony will celebrate a Teaching (Orthros: 8:15 a.m. / Service of Kairos and Proskomede (Preparation of the Gifts): 9:15 a.m. / : 10:15 a.m.). During the Teaching, Fr. Anthony faces the congregation and will interrupt the service at various points to explain what is happening. The Teaching is being offered in conjunction with our Introduction to Orthodox Spirituality classes, but will be enlightening for those who have regularly attended services but don t fully experience the ineffable beauty and power of the Sacrament of the Eucharist (Holy Communion). Vasilopita Auction and Luncheon: Please join the Women's Ministry Team for our annual Vasilopita Auction today, Sunday, January 8, 2017, in the fellowship hall following the Teaching. In accordance with tradition, Fr. Anthony will cut the first Vasilopita, setting aside the first slice for Christ, the second for the Theotokos, the third for St. Basil and the fourth for the poor. Pieces will then be given to representatives of our parish ministries. The parishioner who receives the piece containing the coin is traditionally considered to be especially blessed for the New Year. A free offering luncheon will be served and, of course, all other Vasilopita breads and cakes will be auctioned for sale. Proceeds from the auction will benefit St. Basil Academy, a residential school for at-risk students run by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America; St. Anna's Building Fund; and St. Anna's Women's Ministry Team. Please plan to attend, and have some bidding fun in support of these important ministries. House Blessings: During the weeks following the Feast of Theophany (the appearance of the Holy Trinity at Christ s Baptism Celebrated January 6th), it is customary for the Parish Priest to bless the homes of his parishioners with Holy Water from the Great Sanctification of the Waters, asking the Lord to grant peace, health, salvation and protection to the home, and to the family who resides there. It is also appropriate, during this special time, to have your businesses blessed as well. Blessing forms are available in the Narthex and will be sent via . Please mail, or return the form to the church before the end of January so that Fr. Anthony can properly

4 schedule and accommodate the needs of our parishioners. Once the form is received, Fr. Anthony will call to finalize a specific time to bless your home. This is a wonderful opportunity for Fr. Anthony to get to know you and your family in the comfortable environment of your own home. This is the best occasion to share your thoughts and dreams concerning our parish community with your priest. Upon Fr. Anthony s arrival, please have the family ready to begin the blessing service. Lights should be turned on in all the rooms of the house that are to be blessed. Please provide a list of all names of family members who live in the house so that he can properly pray for them. Tip-off is at 7:00 p.m. Admission is free with a Pass of all Passes. If you don t have a pass, please consider purchasing one, as it will be cheaper than buying a ticket to the game and we will use them for other activities throughout the year. We will meet at 6:40 p.m. at the southeast entrance of the Huntsman Center (please be on time). There should be a sign indicating where to obtain tickets using the Pass of All Passes (or POAP). STEWARDSHIP MINISTRY TEAM ANNOUNCEMENTS To date, we have received 112 stewardship commitment cards with pledges totaling $234,934, putting us at 85% of our goal! Although our official campaign is over (and was a great success), we still have work to do. If you have not yet submitted your stewardship commitment card for 2017, please prayerfully consider your time, talent and treasure commitments and submit your card as soon as possible so that we can proceed as budgeted in the new year. Our continued growth, success and faithful witness is only possible through healthy and spiritually-oriented Stewardship. God loves a cheerful giver!
