1 CHURCH SCHOOL TEACHER LESSON PLANNER Greek Orthodox metropolis of chicago department of religious education
2 THE LIFE OF A RELIGIOUS EDUCATION TEACHER The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. A good understanding is for all who do it. (Psalm 110:10) PREPARING TO TEACH CHURCH SCHOOL CLASSES ATTEND CHURCH SERVICES. Participating in the Liturgical and Sacramental life of the Church (Orthos, Pre-sanctified liturgy, paraklesis, salutations, baptism, wedding, agiasmos, night vigil, divine liturgy, vespers, Saturday of the Souls, Holy Week, chrismation, ordination, church consecration, artoklasia, etc.) will surely reveal an example in you that strengthen connections between you and your students. FAST AND PRAY FOR YOUR STUDENTS. Ask God, through the Holy Spirit, to enlighten you with understanding for upcoming lessons that will guide you to be able to teach them. HAVE A SPIRITUAL FATHER. A spiritual father gives advice, not only through confession, but through many occasions. Three gifts that he offers are insight and discernment; the ability to love others and make our suffering his own; and he helps his spiritual children perceive the world as God created it and as God desires it once more to be. What a blessing to know we have a spiritual father as a resource who can light our path of educating our youth in times of difficult navigation. STUDY THE LITERATURE OF THE CHURCH. Attend Bible study at your parish, listen to sermons online, visit Orthodox websites and build an Orthodox library in your home. Nurturing your own spirit and quest for knowledge will enhance the experiences you provide students in classroom. CHURCH SCHOOL PLANNING Children thrive when they know they are cared for and loved. Pray for having an authentic relationship with your students so that your work will support their life in the Church. Plan units. Units are a series of lessons that support a larger topic or theme in church curriculum. PLANNING LESSONS... OBJECTIVE As a result of the lesson, what is it that you would like your students to learn? ORTHODOX VOCABULARY List key terms that students must know OPENING ROUTINES/PRAYER Warmly welcome your students and communicate the objective. ENGAGE THE STUDENTS How will your students participate in the learning activities? SUMMARIZE THE LEARNING Connect the student activity to objective of the lesson. Authentically praise their efforts. CLOSING ROUTINES/PRAYER Lesson planning calls us to thoughtfully consider the choices we make for students to develop their experiences in the church. It should be a practice that is paced out throughout your week, with prayer and inquiry.
