1 Vol. 32, Issue 9* September 2016 * Christ Episcopal Church, Norway, ME * christch@megalink.net * Website: * Like us on Facebook Dear Ones, Every so often, Erik Karas and I have some version of the following conversation (Erik is the clergy person in the other Lutherpalian setting here in Maine): Nancy: We had such a great gathering of the two congregations the other day! Erik: Great! So when will they start worshiping together all the time? Nancy: That s NOT what we signed up for! There is a real gift in having a couple of different Lutherpalian models, so that people can see that there is not just one right way to do this. The one-congregation model makes sense for Augusta, because of the circumstances they found themselves in. The two-congregation model makes sense for us, because we can still maintain our separate buildings, allowing existing ministries to continue in these two communities. I was thinking about this on Sunday as I sat on the outside steps, watching people arrive for the outdoor service together. It warmed my heart to see you all arriving, greeting one another with warmth and joy. It made me very happy to see cross-denominational cooperation, from setting up chairs to the pick-up choir including singers from both Christ Episcopal and Trinity Lutheran (you sounded good after that one false start). The day may come when it doesn t make sense to support two buildings and two separate congregations, but I don t see it happening soon. We may decide to worship together more frequently, especially in the winter, but I m not going to push it. As long as you are willing to gather two or three times a year, I ll be content. I just want you to come to know and love one another the way that I know and love you all. Erik and I are hoping to offer some sort of show and tell opportunity to the Episcopal Diocese of Maine and New England Lutheran Synod, so that we can share our experiences with others. What would you want me to tell those who might be exploring the possibilities? Feel free to jot down your ideas or come and have a chat with me. In the meantime, I m loving this call just as it is. We are planning to do a "blessing of the backpacks" on Sunday, September 4, as a way to send our kids back into the school year with a tangible reminder of God's loving presence always with them. This is for all ages--pre-k through graduate school (we'll bless Holly in absentia). Feel free to invite friends to join us. A blessing will also be offered on September 4 on teachers (because we have a number of those in our pews, as well). We can repeat the teacher blessing on other Sundays, too, if September 4th doesn't work for you. SEPTEMBER CALENDAR 04 10:30 A.M. Blessing of the Backpacks and Blessing of Teachers 07 9:00 A.M. We meet three days a week, (Monday, Wednesday, Friday) from 11:30 A.M. to 12:30 P.M. Bring a yoga mat or large bath towel and a small hand towel. Payment is by donation for the fuel fund at the church. We usually give $1.00 per session. We have no teacher, only an experienced leader, and anyone will help if needed. It is one hour of silence and beautiful music, ending with a silent meditation. I invite and challenge my Christ Church friends to join us. Benefits may include relaxation, better mobility and balance improvement. Enter by the office entrance and proceed into the sanctuary. Be a few minutes early and meet everyone. We are 5-6 women at present, but men are not excluded! Do you want to get your Beehive by ? Just let us know! JUST A REMINDER. 3 COMBINED SERVICE AND PICNIC AT TRINITY LUTHERAN SUNDAY AUGUST 21st A GOOD TIME WAS HAD BY ALL!! pick up choir sings thanks to Sue Glines for pulling this together We are marching singing dancing praying in the light of God! Caitlin s Generous Heart In September 1986, my niece Caitlin was born with a serious heart defect, which required surgery when she was just two days old. She was taken to Boston Children s Hospital, where the defect was repaired using what was then still a fairly experimental procedure, balloon angioplasty. (A second surgery was done when she turned 18.) She has always wanted to do some sort of fundraiser in gratitude to them. I decided that it was the perfect way to celebrate 30 years (and counting!) of this vibrant young woman's life. So--mark your calendars for FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 23. With the help of family, friends and anyone who wants to volunteer, we will hold a fundraiser spaghetti supper for Boston Children's Hospital in honor of Caitlin's 30th birthday. $8 for adults, $4 for children under 12. We'll serve supper until we run out! The supper will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, starting at 5:30. Donations for BCH in Caitlin's honor also welcomed. Here is a link to the fundraiser page on the BCH website, if you would like more information or to make a donation in Caitlin s honor. Blessings, Nancy 3

5 Photo by Barbi Tinder September- A Stepping Stone Month September is one of those transitional months. It is the time where many of us reluctantly say good bye to the different pace of summer, the additional outdoor activities, the family visits and squeezing in as many of the seasonal activities as we find time for. It is also the time we reluctantly say see you next year to our seasonal parishioners. Here in New England we get to send them off with a flurry of fairs and a splash of color. We are so lucky to live where we can enjoy the change in seasons. During this month, the hallway bulletin board will have a photo representing each season. Using one of the index cards, you are invited to post your name and your favorite activity(s) or pastime(s) for any one of or all of the seasons. It can be either indoor or out door activities. You never know who you might find that enjoys doing the same thing and have a common interest to talk shop! Please feel free to bring in and post a photo of you involved in your passion/ interest. - Barbi Tinder (see one person s passion on page 7) Pastoral Calls If you would like me to visit you, please call me directly, and do not pass word along through a third party. To help us all learn healthier means of communication, I am not going to respond to any request for a visit that comes to me through a third party, unless the person asking for the visit is in the hospital or nursing home and can't make the request personally. Communion is available to those who for physical limitations are not able to be present at our regular weekly worship service, but you are asked to indicate you would like communion at the time you call. 6 FROM THE DIO LOG.. St. Luke's Cathedral to offer a Choral Evensong to celebrate the unveiling of the restored rose window On Sunday, September 18, St. Luke's Cathedral in Portland will celebrate the unveiling of the restored rose window with a Choral Evensong at 4 p.m. A reception will follow so please RSVP to office@cathedralofstluke.org by September 12. Here Dean Ben Shambaugh shows where the window used to be. Living Local: Joining God--October 1 Training Day Living Local is an adventure into new ways of connecting with our neighbors. Think of it as a trek into unknown territory, supported by expert outfitters, in company with one another and congregations from three partner dioceses. The process started last May, when we shared a day in Gardiner learning about changes in the relationship between the church and the world, looking observantly at the neighborhood surrounding Christ Church, and outlining the Living Local journey. Now that summer's end is on the horizon, it's time to move ahead. Next up is a gathering and training session on Saturday, October 1. This is for all congregations contemplating the Living Local journey. You'll learn more about Living Local, and get trained to take first steps. These first steps will be about discernment and preparation; those who decide to commit after this will then begin the two year journey starting first thing in the New Year. We expect this meeting will be in the Augusta area; specifics TBA in the next couple of weeks. Time will probably be 10-3, but that too will get firmed up soon. For now, hold the date! And don't hesitate to call either Michael Ambler at mambler@episcopalmaine.org or Jane Hartwell jhartwell@episcopalmaine.org with questions or wonderments. With excitement about the journey we will share... 6
