While celebrating Taras Shevchenko days at Imaculat 2
3 Heart of Mary School, a raffle draw came with three winners. Each of the students received Taras Shevchenko medal, one of them is our own Martin Duplak. Taras Shevchenko is one of Ukraine most renowned writer, artist and poet. He was one of not so many in Russian Empire of 19 th century, who was writing his poetry and prose in Ukrainian, especially at the time when it was illegal and suppressed by Russia. In the official report Shevchenko was accused in using Ukrainian in his writings. He was imprisoned, convicted and exiled as a private to the Russian military without the right to write in Ukrainian or paint. The medal has a great value of making you a part of the Great Ukrainian History. Martin be proud of all of your achievements especially of this. Singing in the Parish I think we all enjoy good music. Even though there are many styles and categories of music, we all love to please our sense of hearing with nice composition. Some compositions will inspire us, bring joy others will move us to empathy or grief. When we talk about our liturgical singing and music it also has some different aspects build into the composition. The example we can use here can be the liturgical singing of the Holy Week and Bright Week. The music of the Holy Week faithfully was following the texts and the theology of suffering of our Lord and the forgiveness of our sins. In many instances the singing immersed us into that reality. It prayerfully brought us into God s incarnation and death on the cross. The music and liturgical singing of the Bright Week present the atmosphere of joy and happiness of the New Pascha. Christ is Risen! resound in our hearing over and over again teaches about Christ Resurrection on the third day. Singing makes our whole being tremble. All the services that we had for Holy and Bright Weeks received a lot of compliments from visitors and from our parishioners. However none of this would be possible if we would not have our wonderful group of cantors that is leading the whole church in harmony. Their voices make every service a prayerful expression of our faith. Today we would like to express our gratitude to everyone who praises God with his/her voice, especially to: Will, Linda, Brian, Rosemarie, Larry, Maria, Kelly and all who join in singing. We are most grateful for making our Paschal celebration prayerful, meaningful and all-encompassing. Svyachene On Paschal Sunday we all prayed together beautiful Resurrection services and sang Christ is Risen. At the end of the Paschal morning we bless our Easter baskets. Our baskets were full with Pascha (Easter bread), along with pysanky (colored eggs), salt, cheese and butter, sausage and ham, horseradish and babka. After the blessing, we all took our blessed food (svyachene) home in time for breakfast. On April 23rd, Sunday of St. Thomas, Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Parish after the Divine Liturgy held its annual parish Paschal Branch or Svyachene... This day nobody was rushing home, the atmosphere was filled with Pascha and ham. People were sharing blessed food as one big parish family. We express our sincere gratitude to all who shared all of the blessing they receive this Pascha with the members of our parish. 3
4 May God Bless all of the hands that prepare the food and the generous heart of all of the contributors and volunteers. Sunday Message Christ is Risen! We notice around us things that come into being and go out of being. A tree, for example, grows from a tiny shoot, then withers and dies. Whatever comes into being or goes out of existence does not have to be; so the nonbeing is a real possibility. Suppose that nothing has to be; that is, that nonbeing is a real possibility for everything. Then right now nothing would exist. For if the universe began to exist, then all being must trace its origin to some past moment before which there existed literally nothing at all. But from nothing, nothing can come. So the universe could not have begun. Suppose the universe never began. Then, for the infinitely long duration of cosmic history, all being had the built-in possibility not to be. If in an infinite time that possibility was never realized, then it could not have been a real possibility at all. So there must exist something which has to exist, which cannot not to exist. This sort of being is called necessary. Either this necessity belongs to the thing in itself or it is derived from another. If derived from another there must ultimately exist a being whose necessity is not derived, that is, an absolutely necessary being. This absolutely necessary being is God. Truly He is Risen! Holy Eucharist One of the great fruits of Holy Communion, is that the Holy Eucharist makes the Church: "Those who receive the Eucharist are united more closely to Christ. Through it, Christ unites them to all the faithful in one body the Church. Communion renews, strengthens, and deepens this incorporation into the Church, already achieved by Baptism" (CCC 1396). Therefore, the reception of Holy Communion truly unites in communion the Catholic faithful who share the same faith, teachings, traditions, sacraments, and leadership. The church invites the faithfull for Holy Communion with words, The holy Things for the holy! At once its an invitation and a warning. We receive the Holy Gifts not because we concider ourselves worthy but because it is most proper participation in the life of the Church which at the same time is Body of Christ. Each of us is responsible for approaching Holy Eucharist with clean conscience so this union would not be for judjment or condemnation (Christ our Pascha 386). St. Paul reminded the Corinthians: "Every time, then, you eat this bread and drink this cup; you proclaim the death of the Lord until He comes! This means that whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord unworthily sins against the body and blood of the Lord. A man should examine himself first; only then should he eat of the bread and drink of the cup" (1 Cor. 11:26-28). A Catholic must be in a state of grace to receive Holy Communion, and anyone aware of being in a state of mortal sin must first receive absolution in the Sacrament of Penance (CCC 1415). Therefore, Catholic who neglected participation in Sunday Divine Liturgy or who has abandoned his Faith and the teachings of the Church will not receive Holy Gifts with utmost respect and benefits for salvation. 4
