5 FROM THE LORD IS MY HELP THE LORD IS MY HELP The Lord Is My Help ministry is located in the leased bottom portion of the Oddfellows building at the corner of State and Desoto streets in Ocean Springs, where it has been situated since the early 1990 s. From this small space two employees and numerous volunteers run an efficient food ministry to feed needy people who live primarily in west Jackson County. In 2014, over 62,000 meals were provided and over 2,700 households helped with groceries from our pantry. For the first half of 2015 versus the first half of 2014, number of meals provided is up 4% and number of households helped with groceries is up 14%. While operating a food pantry is an important part of our ministry, the main mission of The Lord Is My Help is to provide a nutritious hot meal five days a week to people in need. Although anyone, including the homeless, can come to eat lunch on-site from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm, Monday through Friday, the great majority of our patrons are sick, disabled, and/or elderly folks, who live in their homes and receive meals via home deliveries. Around 135 meals a day are delivered, with 80 to 85 going to Villa Maria and Samaritan House residents. Others are delivered by volunteer drivers to residents in west and east sections of Ocean Springs up to Ocean Springs Road. About 20 meals are also taken to St. Martin/D'Iberville residents. (Note that numbers may vary from day to day.) Overall operation of The Lord Is My Help is supervised by a board of twelve dedicated individuals, several of whom have served for many years. Kay Woods has served as Director of the Board since the ministry s inception in Board participants are members of seven Ocean Springs churches: St. Alphonsus, St. John's, St. Paul, Macedonia, St. Elizabeth Seton, First Presbyterian, and Wesley. The current cost for providing this important meal service to the needy is $2.16 per meal. Many persons who eat our meals contribute money as they are able to help support the ministry; however, our primary source of revenue is from donations by churches, individuals, businesses, organizations, collection boxes placed around town, fund raisers, and a small grant. Revenues for FY 2015 are running 13% below those for FY 2014 with expenses up 6%. Giving is traditionally low during the summer, and this year our checking account at the end of June was 46% percent lower than in June of last year. This information is being provided with the hope that you will consider donating additional funds and pantry items to The Lord Is My Help so that this valuable service to our community can be maintained. Also, the Feed the Need fish fry, a fund raiser to benefit our ministry, is taking place August 2nd, 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., at the Government Street Grocery in Ocean Springs. We are asking for your support in providing publicity and participation for this event. Thank you, The Lord Is My Help Board

6 Prayers for the Sick Almighty God, giver of life and health: Comfort and relieve those who are sick and give your power of healing to those who minister to their needs, that they may be strengthened in their weakness and have confidence in your loving care; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Look for the basket containing her handiwork either in the narthex or back of the church. Children, very young and not so young, are welcome to complete activities centered on each Sunday s readings and perhaps learn a bit about themselves or the Bible. Thank you, Flinda. We promise not to scribble on the pews and to return the crayons when we leave.
