1 Holy Eucharist, Rite I Trinity Sunday St. John s Episcopal Church 7:30 a.m. Sunday, May 22, 2016 Ocean Springs, Mississippi Welcome to St. John s. We are very glad you have joined us for worship today. As you prepare for worship, please be sensitive to the needs of those around you who may wish to pray quietly. Please refrain from unnecessary conversation and silence any audible electronic devices. As an aid those who wish to read the liturgy directly from the Book of Common Prayer and the Hymnal 1982, an outline of the service is printed below. Opening Acclamation Trisagion Collect of the Day First Reading Psalm 8 Second Reading Holy Gospel Sermon Nicene Creed Prayers of the People Confession of Sin Peace Holy Communion Offertory Sentence Book of Common Prayer, p. 323 Book of Common Prayer, p. 324 Book of Common Prayer, p. 176 Proverbs 8:1-4, Book of Common Prayer, p. 592 Romans 5:1-5 John 16:12-15 The Very Rev. 2 Offertory Great Thanksgiving Eucharistic Prayer I Book of Common Prayer, p. 333 Proper Preface Book of Common Prayer, p. 347 Sanctus Book of Common Prayer, p. 334 The Lord s Prayer Book of Common Prayer, p. 336 Fraction Book of Common Prayer, p. 337 Postcommunion Prayer Book of Common Prayer, p. 339 Blessing Book of Common Prayer, p. 339 Dismissal Book of Common Prayer, p. 340 After the Dismissal, some in the congregation may wish to be seated again to enjoy the Postlude. If you do not wish to stay for the Postlude, please leave quietly. Lessons for Today Some prefer to listen to the lessons from Holy Scripture without reading along with the lector. For them the act of listening to Holy Scripture read aloud is an important spiritual discipline. Others prefer to bring their bibles to worship services and to look up the scripture verses that are being read aloud. For them the physical use of the bible and the physical handling of the book itself is an important spiritual discipline. Still others prefer to access the Holy Scriptures used in worship via the reprinting of the lessons in bulletins or service leaflets prepared for worship services at St. John s. For those who wish to read along with the lector from Holy Scripture as reprinted by the parish, the lessons for today are printed below. First Reading Proverbs 8:1-4, Does not wisdom call, and does not understanding raise her voice? On the heights, beside the way, at the crossroads she takes her stand; beside the gates in front of the town, at the entrance of the portals she cries out: To you, O people, I call, and my cry is to all that live. The Lord created me at the beginning of his work, the first of his acts of long ago. Ages ago I was set up, at the first, before the beginning of the earth. When there were no depths I was brought forth, when there were no springs abounding with water. Before the mountains had been shaped, before the hills, I was brought forth when he had not yet made earth and fields, or the world s first bits of soil. When he established the heavens, I was there, when he drew a circle on the face of the deep, when he made firm the skies above, when he established the fountains of the deep, when he assigned to the sea its limit, so that the waters might not transgress his command, when he marked out the foundations of the earth, then I was beside him, like a master worker; and I was daily his delight, rejoicing before him always, rejoicing in his inhabited world and delighting in the human race. 2
3 Second Reading Romans 5:1-5 Since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us. Holy Gospel John 16:12-15 Jesus said to his disciples, I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you. A Note on Today s Readings Trinity Sunday: The First Sunday after Pentecost Year C The first Sunday after Pentecost has been celebrated as a feast in honor of the Holy Trinity since the tenth century. Most festivals of the year celebrate a historical event, and although we celebrate a doctrine today, it is a doctrine based on historical events that revealed the nature of God as the Holy Trinity. The first reading is from Proverbs. Here Wisdom speaks. She is the personification of God s mighty power. Wisdom describes herself as God s agent in creating the universe. Here we find an indication of the multipersonal God fully revealed as the Holy Trinity by Christ. In the reading from Romans, we find Paul articulating the growing discovery of the first Christians that we experience God s salvation as the work of the Father, of Jesus, and of the Holy Spirit. In the Gospel reading from John, Jesus describes the work of the Father, the Spirit, and himself as the work of the one God. This is not a developed doctrine of the Trinity (one was not fully developed by the church until the fifth century), but in it God is described as a dynamic relationship into which we are incorporated through the Holy Spirit. We come together to celebrate the Eucharist, and, called together by the Spirit, we encounter Christ in word and sacrament revealing the Father, and leading us into that eternal exchange of love which is at the heart of the Blessed Trinity. Praying it Forward Capital Campaign 146 pledges received totaling $737,506 $343, paid on pledges through February 29, 2016 $393, to go Financial Update Year-to-Date Report: End of March 2016 Actuals vs. Budget Tithes, Offerings, etc.: $101, $92, Expenses: $74, $107, At the end of March, the parish was ahead of budget on tithes and offerings. And, the parish was under budget on expenses. Some members give their pledge in one lump sum at the beginning of the year, therefore, the parish typically exceeds budget for Tithes, Offerings, etc. early in the year. You will note that budgeted expenses are higher than budgeted income. Expenses are higher than income because we were budgeted to run a deficit in The difference comes from our cash reserves (our savings). 11
