3 How to Make a Summer Assembly Sing Sr. Mary Jo Quinn, SCL Sister Mary Jo Quinn is a Sister of Charity of Leavenworth (KS). She is Pastoral Associate/Director of Music, Liturgy and Outreach at Blessed Trinity Catholic Community, Missoula, MT. She received the Pastoral Musician of the Year award in 2011 from NPM (National Association of Pastoral Musicians) and has served on the Boards of NPM and DMMD. In the Diocese of Helena, she serves on the Diocesan Liturgical Commission and as Director of the Diocesan Choir. Do you remember your summer assembly of last summer? Beyond the weekly assembly, do you remember the horrific scandals around abuse that re-surfaced? Or the angry rhetoric of U.S. politics? Or the continued struggles of immigrants at the southern border? What were your particular challenges last summer? Who was baptized? Who died? What important milestones did you celebrate? Were there weddings and wedding anniversaries that were well celebrated? Who moved away? Who became a new member? Did the events of the world touch the liturgy that was celebrated each week? In a Ministry Monday podcast of the National Association of Pastoral Musicians, Rory Cooney asks, How can we expect to go to Mass and be untouched by the events of our world? Or has the memory of last summer by now become one with the many summers of your life as a music minister? My reflections for this piece have taken me to the nature of summer assemblies, which vary greatly across our country. From my own assembly, which is in a smaller urban parish in the heart of the western U.S. vacationland, to the parishes that I have visited in other urban areas, vacation capitals, small towns and in a few European cities, I have observed that many parishes meet the same challenges in preparation and experience of the Sunday liturgy in summertime. To begin, in many parishes, the regular attendance is less predictable. In an increasingly affluent and mobile society where a yearly vacation or a summer home is a possibility for many, consistency of numbers is simply not a given. Some of the regular parishioners might be away for the whole summer. On the other hand, many parishes are graced weekly by an assortment of visitors some of them strangers, some of them guests of parishioners, some of them visiting other relatives and friends in the area. Sometimes, the weekly assembly is much larger; I am told that sometimes the assembly size is double that of the permanent residents if the parish is in a vacation destination. Regarding those who lead the weekly worship, only a very large parish or large music staff does not struggle with the irregular attendance of music leaders from week to week. Liturgical ministers, too, are often absent and the leadership is recruiting some of the ministers on the spot. Regular music rehearsal may be less regular or may be suspended through the summer. Patterns for communication with music ministers must become well-established so that important announcements can still be conveyed. I offer the paragraphs that follow in hopes of addressing some of these challenges. Generally, I ve allowed the feasts of the Holy Trinity and the Body and Blood of Christ that follow Pentecost to be a bit of a bridge into the Sundays of Ordinary Time 24

In an article in the National Catholic Reporter (Vol. 54, No. 25, p.4) Laura Hammel, a member of the Poor Clare community in Saginaw, Michigan, found a cool image: a kaleidoscope! It was a childhood toy that worked on the principle of reflection. Each time the tube was rotated, the design came together in a new way. Laura says, the changing patterns are an example of how the three persons of the Trinity move together in compelling and ever-new ways. She then elaborates on the metaphor in her daily life. Visit her website at: srsclare.com. Try not to overuse Trinitarian texts and be sure to sing three verses if that s what it takes to include the verse about the Third Person of the Blessed Trinity. Although both titles were used in our history, Holy Spirit is the title currently used in many official texts in this century. The spectral implications of the word ghost in popular culture have contributed to the more common use of the title, Holy Spirit. Today is the only Sunday that we sing psalm 8 as a responsorial psalm at Mass. The verses praise the God throughout creation. Dan Schutte s All My Days is based on Psalm 8. The verses of Cyprian Consiglio s You Are Child, from Glory and Praise 3, are based on Psalm 8, and are most appropriate for use at infant Baptism.
