Compassionate Community Care (CCC) offers advice concerning end-of-life decision making, euthanasia & assisted suicide. Call: ( ). There will be no mass on Friday, Dec 21st. GIRM 309- The dignity of the Word of God requires that in the church there be a suitable place from which it may be proclaimed and toward which the attention of the faithful naturally turns during the Liturgy of the Word. It is appropriate that generally this place be a stationary ambo and not simply a moveable lectern. The ambo must be located in keeping with the design of each church in such a way that the ordained ministers and readers may be clearly seen and heard by the Faithful. From the ambo only the readings, Responsorial Psalm and the Easter Proclamation (Exsultet) are to be proclaimed; likewise it may be used for giving the homily and for announcing the intentions of the Universal Prayer. Installation of Lay Presiders Dec 30th Bishop Brian Dunn has appointed six Lay Presiders for the Northside/Victoria Deanery. The priests of the Deanery have all agreed to do a public installation of their local lay appointee at the same time on Sunday, Dec. 30th during mass. Bishop Dunn appointed persons who graduated from the Lay Formation or Lay Presiders Programs in previous years. The following people have been trained and appointed to a three year term: Monica Shebib & David Lewis of St Joseph Parish, North Sydney; Joanne Vassallo of St Joseph, Dingwall; Norma Blinkhorn & Sandra Haley of Holy Family, Sydney Mines; and Sharon Voutier of St Joseph, Bras d Or. The appointees understand this is not an honour, rather a call to service. They will initially be offering services in the hospitals and Senior s Homes. On behalf of the Northside Victoria Deanery, we thank them for their willingness to serve and recognize them for their official appointment by our Bishop. Please consider joining us on Sunday, Dec 30th at your local parish mass for the installation of your new lay presider. Peace, Fr. Douglas MacDonald Dean - Northside/Victoria Deanery Pastor St Joseph, North Sydney CBU is collecting winter clothing for the students. Chaplaincy at CBU is accepting donations on campus and Fr Doug will pick up donations at parishes. Please consider promoting this cause and call Fr Doug for pick up or doug_macdonald@cbu.ca
3 Meeting for Hall Users & Wasted Heat There is an important meeting for any group or persons expecting to book St Joseph Hall in The meeting is Wed. Dec. 19th at 7:15 pm in the hall. A representative of each group must be present then if they plan to use the hall for free in St Joseph average annual oil bill is $32,500 and it is no longer affordable. One issue on the agenda is asking groups not to waste the church s money by leaving heat on high when they leave. Throughout the month of November, heat was left on high all night seven times. Groups that left without turning down the heat wasted approximately $186 per night. Forgetting to turn down the thermostat have cost the church $1302 at the beginning of the winter heating season. So an explanation of the newly installed zone system will take place. My goal is to always have a warm church and hall, while also reducing heating expenses by one third. I believe we can reduce the heating costs in two ways: 1.Two separate zones have just been installed. Now there are separate thermostats for the upstairs church and down stairs hall basement. 2. Eliminating waste by turning down the heat when groups leave. The alarm company informs me of which groups were in and when. Groups leaving the heat on high over night, will be invoiced for that wasted oil starting in In the past when money was plentiful, these conversations never had to take place, but now days we are in a tight financial position that forces us to avoid waste and watch expenses. Thank you for your cooperation as we seek to balance the books and dig out of debt. Peace, Fr. Doug First Saturday s Resume in Spring The church is closed during the week in the New Year, opening only for weekend masses and funerals. First Saturday s in honour of the Blessed Mother will resume at the Church after the heating season. People are still encouraged to meet in homes during the winter time. Please Note: Any items to be placed in the bulletin must be in by Wednesday of each week. Thank you. Final Call for Completing Paperwork For those who missed the workshop on Responsible Ministry Protocols, you must come in to sign the Covenant of Care/Code of Conduct with Estelle at the office asap and for those with keys to the church, dealing with money or working with minors or vulnerable adults you must also go into the police station to complete your required checks. Final call for Ministers and Volunteers is December 17, In the new year measures will be taken to be compliant with the insurance requirements on the Diocese. Thank you for your cooperation, Fr. Doug Christmas Mass Times: Monday, Dec. 24th Monday, December 24 Tuesday, Dec. 25th 10:00 am St. Joseph Plug Connector Fixed Albert MacKinnon, district deputy for the Knights of Columbus installed a new XLR connector plug used for the floor mic. This mic will now be used for eulogies, veterans services, speeches and any other announcements. The Church has such reverence for the Word God, that the place where the Word is proclaimed should be reserved only for that sacred experience. Thus she has always taught the ambo (pulpit) is only to be used for proclaiming God s Word. Peace, Fr. Doug New Year s Mass Times: Monday, December 31 Tuesday, st 4:00 pm Frenchvale 6:00 pm St. Joseph 9:00 pm St. Joseph 4:00 pm Frenchvale 10:00 am St. Joseph PLEASE NOTE: There will be no weekday masses on Wednesday, December 26th and Thursday, December 27th but there will be a 9:00 am mass on Friday, December 28th. Regular mass schedule on Jan 2-4th. The annual Blue Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, December 19 at 6:30 pm. This special mass is for anyone who finds this time of the year difficult or anyone who feels a loss at this time of the year. All are welcome.
4 John Ratchford s Videos of Diocese Local entrepreneur John Ratchford produced four short videos (8 min each) on the history of the Diocese for our 175th anniversary. They are powerful videos illustrating great Diocesan moments in Cape Breton and the mainland. They show the whole truth, including recent painful moments in our history. John will be playing the four videos at our advent Bereavement Workshop in St Joseph Hall on Sunday, Dec. 16th from 1-3 pm. It is an inclusive bereavement experience and John Ratchford s videos on the history of the Diocese will help bring out our feelings. We thank John, Norma and Harry for their leadership. Everyone is welcome. Last Chance to buy 50/50 Tickets The parish will be concluding its regular 50/50 draws before Christmas. The draw will take place on Dec. 21st in time for Christmas. I wish to thank everyone who has volunteered to sell tickets and all those who purchased them over the years. From studying stewardship theology, I am not a fan of fundraising for ordinary or regular parish expenses e.g. food, oil, salaries, power etc. I trust that which is offered to God at mass is all we need for normal expenses. God will provide, so we live within our means for ordinary parish expenses. Extraordinary expenses such as: a new furnace, roof repair or other rare situations still require fundraising, but we save fundraising for extraordinary and rare occasions. My experience has been you can only go to the well so many times, otherwise we develop fundraising fatigue. We will take a break from selling 50/50 tickets in the new year, so please take advantage of this last opportunity before Christmas. Peace, Fr. Doug Decorating of the church for Christmas will take place on Thursday, December 20 after the 9:00 am Mass. Please note: Anyone wishing to donate poinsettias for Christmas can bring in your poinsettia(s) by Wednesday, December 18th anytime from 9:00 am until 2:30 pm. Decorating of the church will take place on Thursday, December 20th. Many thanks. The Dec 22 nd, 2018 to Apr 14 th schedule for Extraordinary Ministers of Communion is available in the vestry. It will run until Palm Sunday. Please note, this is a new pattern. There will be 3 EMC on the altar with Fr. Doug & Deacon Roy. Only one Chalice of Precious Blood will be distributed by the Deacon or EMC, on the tabernacle side of the church. When our Deacon is not present, a 4 th EMC will need to come forth from the assembly. During special feasts, such as Christmas & Easter, there will be 4 EMC on the altar with Fr. Doug & Deacon Roy. So, the Chalice of Precious Blood will be distributed on both sides of the altar.
