2 North American Exarchate Imperial Order of Saint Eugene of Trebizond North American Exarchate P. O. Box 30032, San Bernardino, CA U.S.A. 909~567~8038 FOURTH QUARTER 2008 I greet you in the name of the Beloved Martyred Saint Eugene. I pray that this issue of the New Byzantine finds each Knight and their families in good health and spirits. We had a great Investiture. There are pictures in this Issue that will show what a magnificent time we had. For those who were not able to attend, you missed a majestic and impressive ceremony. The Mission Inn has one of the most beautiful chapels in Southern California. It is built in the old Mission Style of California Missions. For those who do not know, Father Junipero Serra was a Franciscan Priest whom, in 1751, moved up the California cost and founded a series of missions to bring Christianity to the Native American tribes of Indians. The tradition continued after his death, with 21 Missions founded between San Diego in the south to San Francisco in the north. Each mission was one walking day apart. It also solidified Mexican control over Alta California, which lasted until At dawn on June 14, 1846, thirty-three heavily armed Rebels gathered at the fortified California Provincial Capital in Sonoma at the adobe home of California Governor, General Mariano Vallejo, on the north side of the Sonoma's Plaza. These men were displeased with Mexican rule. They pounded on the door and loudly demanded the General come out and surrender the California province to them. Vallejo quickly donned his dress Mexican Army uniform, then opened the door and invited three representatives of the group in for breakfast and wine. After Breakfast, he surrendered
3 California to this unlikely band of dissenters. This successful revolution allowed California to become an independent country. America, wishing to have a coast to coast empire, invaded the Independent Country of California under General Fremont in The California State Flag is the same as that flag raised on the morning of June 14, 1846: one star to indicate an independent country; a red stripe to indicate the rebels willingness to shed blood for independence; a grizzly bear because it was the fiercest and most determined fighter in California, just like the rebels; and the words California Republic to indicate the independence of California. But I am rambling. The Mission Inn is a proud reminder of the rich heritage of the early Mission days of California. If you were unable to attend, you missed a great time!!!! By the way, I am a native Californian, proud that we were an independent country. We continue our series on Ancient Orders. In these days of battling radical Islam, we should not lose sight that our Imperial Family were leaders in fighting Islam for over 1,000 years. These Ancient Orders were founded to combat the Islamic desire to conquer the world. Last month the Order continued to help our Blind School Charity in Cyprus. The Order collected 120 used eyeglasses and sent them to the school along with a $1,000,00 donation. However, sun glasses are needed. This Christmas when you are shopping for gifts, please purchase as many inexpensive sunglasses as you can. Send them to me and I will put together a package for the Blind School and mail to Cyprus. May God continue to bless each of our Knights daily. Marykatos Dr. Russell R. Fritz G.Cl.E.Tr Marquis of Marykatos Exarch for North America Order of Saint Eugene of Trebizond
