A little nobody who shook up the world. - Mamie Till Bradley
8 Intro: Hook your readers and describe who you are without stating your name. Interview with Emmett Till Text Structure: Cause/Effect (make text the correct corresponding color As a young boy growing up in Chicago in the 1950s, I was unaware of the extreme segregation that was taking place in the South. While I knew that my Great Uncle Mose and my Great Aunt Elizabeth had a different lifestyle than my Mama and I, and I did not know how careful they had to be around the White people who lived in their small town of Money, Mississippi. I definitely did not know of the rage that one white man would have for me after a few short days of visiting Mississippi. The outcome of my trip would be one that was brought about by the little knowledge I had of the racism floating through the southern region of the country. I grew up in a city of sports and good food. I was close with my Mama and worked hard to please her (41). She was single mom and always tried to give me the best life she could offer. When I thought of the idea to go down and visit my Uncle Mose, she needed some convincing. She told me, Emmett, you better be careful with how you speak to those white people. Step off the street to let a white woman pass, lower your head and don t look up. She went over this with me countless times, and I thought it was the silliest thing I had ever heard. (35) I knew that I had to be careful, but I never once thought that after a stupid dare from my cousins my life would be put in jeopardy. I remember that Wednesday night; sitting in a stuffy church as Uncle Mose preached about the lord. After one look with my cousins, we knew that sneaking out and going to town would be a lot more enjoyable. So we made our way to Byrant s, the local grocery and meat market. It was a dare. I had dared people millions of times, and had been dared countless times before. Yet, this dare was different. Text evidence: Should be a direct quote from person or about them. if it is an intext citation, you just need the pg # and no quotes
9 Interview Continued... Text Structure: Compare/ Contrast and get a date with her. (51) So I did exactly what they asked. Her name was Carolyn, and she was a pretty white woman with dark hair. In the back of my head, I heard my Mama s voice telling me not to do it. it did not stop me. In the North it would have been a risk, but it would not have cost me my life. However, in the South it was different. I knew right away from the look in Carolyn s eyes that it was going to be the opposite reaction. She nearly screamed and for a minute I thought she was going to call the cops. Instead of laughing it off like it would have happened back home, I ran out afraid that I was going to get into trouble. Text Structure: Chronological After that night, my Uncle was on edge. Three days went by and he was convinced that I should leave. He was about to schedule a bus ride home. In the meantime, I tried to convince him, again and again, that it was fine and Order had just been a prank that had gone unnoticed by everyone else. Finally, Uncle Mose decided that I could stay. Shortly after the decision had been made, the night came that my kidnappers appeared at the front door. The fear that I faced that night was unlike any other. They drove me around for hours; making me wonder what my fate would be. I remember the moment they pulled into the plantation in the rusty beaten up pickup truck. Beatings and whippings lasted for hours.the white men wanted me to admit my wrong doings. I never did. I never admitted that I had done anything wrong. They beat me again until they could beat me no more. People say that I started a movement; that I started a revolution. I believe I was just a fourteen year old boy, but I was a boy who was no better than any other fourteen year old boy black or white. Conclusion: Use a clincher in which it leaves the reader with a new thought or perspective
