Rotary Club of Regina Eastview The ROTOR Service Above Self Thursday February 21, 2013 Club Web Site Editor: Peter Peters If you have any comments or questions, the editor. Feb 28 Mar 7 Mar 14 Mar 21 Mar 28 Victoria East Chiropractic Clinic with Dr. Shane Taylor Overview of Regina International Airport (past, present, future) with Jim Hunter TBA Advising African Country Credit Unions with Bruce Rogers (RC Regina South) West Wind Aviation with Pat Fahlman NEXT Week Victoria East Chiropractic Clinic with Dr. Shane Taylor February 28, 2013 DUTY ROSTER Registration: Regan Sanderson Greeter: Zaren Zavery 50/50: Richard Schwan Student Pickup: Charles Sadzamare Picking up Exchange Student Maite Lhoir for Rotary our Luncheon here is what you do! Please call Maite on the Tuesday evening of the week you pick her up Maite s cell or her home host telephone Maite attends Thom Collegiate, 265 Argyle St. N. Registration Desk: If you get to the Regina Eastview meeting just before 12 noon then chances are good that you will be directed to one of two lines the cash line and debt card line. Cash is faster (at least it is so when the cash box is guarded by someone that can count) and with Gail Bradley being in charge there was no wait. Right next to Gail, Charles Sadzamare was the 50/50 ticket seller offering opportunity to win a bundle for as little as $2.00. Not sure what he offered you, but he intimated there was a good chance I had the winning ticket it was good news.

Greeter: Welcoming attendees to today s special event was the always upbeat Alan Smith who was pleased Wally Dressler came to the meeting of course Wally was pleased to photo-graphed yet again. Master of Ceremonies: President John Van Koll directed traffic today and did so with his usual efficient dispatch, leading in most activities generated from the podium. 50/50 Draw: Charles Sadzamare was the Rotarians responsible for ensuring the draw was conducted in a transparent and effective mode. In keeping with these parameters he called on former Regina City Counsellor and highly regarded solicitor to draw the winning ticket. The undisputed winner of the $30.00 was the ever humble Wally Dressler, who was heard to murmur I don t really deserve this all the while holding out his hand as the money was counted into his sweaty palm. Thought for the Day: Our, always ready with wisdom, Philosopher Leif Riesach made those who caught on, chuckle with this observation by American comedian, actor, and writer, George Burns, Retirement at sixty-five is ridiculous. When I was sixty-five, I still had pimples. Lead table: Persons President John assembled at the lead table provided a glimpse of what would happen at the meeting. Seated in an orderly fashion were President John, Peter Neufeldt, Jill Poulton, Louis Browne, Scott Cheston and Richard Schwan Guests: Gail Bradley was called on to introduce our guests and visiting Rotarians. As the latter did not show up, Gail was able to focus on introducing our two guests Jill Poulton (left) a guest of the Club, and Scott Cheston (upper right) a guest of Louis Browne. NEW MEMBER INDUCTION New member induction is always a highlight and so it was today as President John invited Past Membership Director Richard Schwan to perform the ceremony. Richard, pinch-hitting for cousin Chris Schwan, invited Sponsor Louis Browne and Inductee Scott Cheston to join him at the podium. In introducing Scott, Richard noted that prior to moving to Regina, Scott lived in Ontario, Manitoba and Alberta. Scott obtained undergraduate and post graduate degrees from University of Regina and is employed by Sasktel as a Service Manager. In his Induction remarks, Richard reminded Scott, as he did all of us, about the privileges and responsibilities of Rotary membership. He emphasized that as a representative of our vocation we link our place of business with Rotary and visa versa. He concluded by drawing attention to the four questions poised in the Four-Way Test and how these serve to keep us true to our commitment to Service Above Self. President John applied the pin to Scott s shirt and we all had opportunity to welcome Scott to the world of Rotary and the Rotary Club of Regina Eastview in particular.

won GOLD in Wrestling in this Western Canada event and will now be competing in the Canadian play down (or wrestle down ). PROGRAM Scott Cheston Contact Info: Home address: 115 McGaul Crescent Regina, SK S4R 3X4 Telephone: Fax: Classification: Telecommunications Service Mgr SERGEANT-AT-ARMS Armed with his devise stepping up to the plate Sergeant-At-Arms Jeff Barber was in the right frame of mind to be nice and to raise some cash. Peter Neufeldt was fined for dropping a carrot on the floor at the GALA in front of the Sergeant and having the audacity not to pick it up and chomp it down; President John for the slowness of pinning Scott; Nelson Falkowsky for skipping ahead in the buffet line (arguing did not remove or lessen the fine); Gary Dickson for wearing a winter disguise; Richard s fine was withdrawn (unknown logic); Des Silver because of out-bidding Jeff for something Nancy really wanted; Sam Berg for not knowing where George Poll was born (or caring for that matter); Doreen Pankewich for not knowing Leif Riesach s place of birth. Rotobucks were handed out to Barry Strohan, Kelly Ljunggren, Arden Giesbrecht, Alan Smith, members of the Valentine GALA Planning Committee and the Bomber Team for being the leading ticket sellers. Sadly, the Lions Team who sold the fewest tickets were asked to pay a $1.00. Happy dollars were contributed by Ted Tejada who won the diamond ring at the GALA event which rather pleased his wife; and, Charles Sadzamare was pleased to tell us that his son (University of Regina) Peter Neufeldt was invited to introduce our guest speaker Jill Poulton, a networking expert, who has her own business Destination by Design Living out of Leadership. From a 12 year career with CIBC, Jill choose to focus her energy on enhancing the skills and abilities by coaching individuals and bringing out the powerful leadership potential within (from Jill s website) In her presentation, Jill stressed everyone has a circle of influence and how we impact or effect our area of influence depends on how we present ourselves. Shy, quiet people who have difficulty meeting people face a significant challenge in influencing, while extroverts are more successful as they venture out with greater ease. It is not enough to come to a meeting, in order to influence others, one must work at developing relationships, going out for coffee, a meal or other social opportunity. Networking for results means you network with a defined purpose. Jill referenced the importance of seeking out a mentor and being open to serve as a mentor. As a commitment to lifelong learning is important, mentors expand our understanding and we are able to use their experience and their stories as we mentor others. In referencing social media, Jill made the point that this is a 24/7 networking opportunity and is not so much about selling your business as is it is about developing relationships with your contacts. Social is the key word and it reminds us that we tend to do business with those we know, like and trust and social media builds those components of our being. As a people oriented individual, Jill concluded her presentation by suggesting that there is a richness of knowledge, wisdom and

understanding in this room, which I thought was very astute and quite bang on. President John thanked Jill for her presentation and invited members to speak with Jill after the meeting. PUBLIC RELATIONS MOMENT Jeff Barber was called on to update members on the work of the Rotary Clubs of Regina Public Relations Committee in establishing a centralized Rotary Clubs Website. A couple of Rotaract Members have been contracted to keep the Website current, refreshed and exciting. Jeff is now looking for a member of our Club to serve as the point person who will collect and forward information to the central site. Person interested should contact Jeff at jeff.barber@sasktel.net or A ROTARY TIDBIT (From RI Weekly Update 15 February 2013) A peace fellow s experience at the Peace Forum in Honolulu By Marios Antoniou (left) a Rotary Peace Fellow, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill It was an honor, and a pleasure, to be invited to address the attendees of the Rotary Global Peace Forum in Honolulu. These people travelled from across the world to the Hawaiian Islands in the middle of the Pacific Ocean to share their thoughts and actions for peace, in the spirit of Aloha. Three days went by fast, perhaps too fast! I did not have enough time to catch up with old friends that I got to see again, or get to know my new friends better. Nevertheless, as always, at the end of a Rotary International event, I find myself with an even greater circle of friends from around the world. I find myself to be more knowledgeable about global issues, more informed about how close we are to eradicating Polio and more aware of Rotary led local and global projects that seek to improve the lives of people around the world! Beyond the inspiring content of the forum, I was touched by another source of inspiration: Pearl Harbor. President Tanaka chose wisely, as a wise man he is. Berlin Oahu Hiroshima. When I stood over the silenced resting body of the Arizona, absorbing the experience, the images from the documentaries, the place, the smell of the oil on the surface of the water and the names on the marble, my thoughts drifted away. I remembered standing at Thermopylae, where Leonidas and his soldiers fought and bravely died. I remembered other places where the land and the water were colored red by the blood of men and women. I thought of my home country, Cyprus, as well. What are these monuments for? They are constructs built to honor the dead, yes. They teach the new generations about the bravery of their ancestors who gave their lives for the idea of the nation and for the lives of its future generations. I certainly agree that this is a noble thing to do. However, I do believe that, the primary role of these places and these monuments should be to teach these new generations why this should never happen again. Let your thought carry you away when you stand in Hiroshima, facing yet another monument. ANNOUNCEMENTS On behalf of the Valentine GALA Coordinating Committee Chair Ron Okumura thanked members for making this GALA such a great success. More tickets were sold and the feedback has been very positive. He concluded by introducing the Committee and thanking them for their outstanding commitment and dedication.

COMMENTARY On February 23, Rotary will celebrate its 108 th Birthday. Around the world Rotarians will be celebrating aspects of humanitarian service and being warmed by the inner glow of doing good in the world. I think Regina Eastview jumped the gun a little and had this celebration on February 15 as we came together for the Valentine GALA. I must confess to often considering real humanitarian service something that happens thousands of miles away in some developing country. The truth is the impact of service is as great right here at home as I experienced last Saturday. As usual for our Saturday morning, Margaret and I join some friends at two different Robin s Donut shops. At the first shop we happened to bump into Bill, one of the Reel Anti-Suppressant singers with whom I have developed a How are you today kind of relationship, since the group sang for us last year. Bill was all aglow when he expressed his delight with this great opportunity their group had the previous evening. He told me they would be off to Loreburn, Saskatchewan to perform at a local function there. As we were getting up to leave the second Robin s in comes George the Reel guitar player, who I meet at the Delta when they were setting up the stage on Friday afternoon, and watched perform at the GALA in the evening. He was as excited as Bill about what great fun they had at the Rotary bash and advised that in addition to Loreburn, they would be performing at a special Mental Health function in Saskatoon in May. Thanks a lot George said, for inviting us again. Humanitarian service happens right here, it happens in basic acts of kindness and appreciation and it happens every day. Thank you for taking Peace through Service to heart. For the Regina Eastview ROTOR I am Peter Peters
