Bound By a Cable Tow I passed the ones who guard the sacred way Then I was told to kneel and 'tend a prayer To Deity, whose mighty power holds sway O'er all the mortals who assembled there. And when my heart did quake with sudden fear That even now I might not find the light, A so voice whispered in my ear: "Fear not!" and all misgivings took their flight. Where Are YOU Going? 3 From the East Wor. Bilavian From the West Bro. Echevarria Reviewing of the month of February shows we had a busy schedule, I would like to congratulate our newly ini ated brothers: Bro. Stepan Gevorgyants and Bro. Tigran Nazaretyan. We had an excellent first degree, congratula ons to all of the officers who performed the work and I would also like to congratulate Bro. Narek Manukyan for an excellent delivery of his first degree proficiency. Our Mardi Gras party was a huge success, the dining hall was decorated most beau fully decorated by the commi ee. I'd like to thank all those who helped put on the event, including Wor. Hamlet Khatcherian and Bro. Alfred Isagulyan, a special thanks goes to Bro. Alex and his wife Valen na Ashjian for their efforts as well. Last month we also hosted the Officers School of Instruc on coordinated by our Inspector Wor. Jeff Yates. Also present were the Assistant Grand Lecturer of Division 5, Wor. Lynn Wallingford and the Grand Marshall of the Grand lodge of California, Wor. William O Brien. Wor. O Brien gave a presenta on on Markers of Con nued Success. I would like to thank Wor. O Brien for spending the me and energy in sharing this very meaningful presenta on to us and Wor. Yates in arranging all this for us. As a reminder the last Tuesday of the month we hold our Admin Tuesday / Social Night, where those on commi ees can have me to work at the lodge. It's also a night where the brothers can come together and socialize; work with the Officer's Coach or their candidate's coaches, we'll also have brothers giving short talks on masonic subjects or studying sec ons from the CMC. As a reminder on March 19th we have special guest lecturer, Right Wor. Russell Charvonia, Senior Grand Warden of the Grand Lodge of California. For all our members who are of age of Golden Veteran Award and have not received their pin and cer ficate yet, the lodge is working hard with our new Inspector to get your awards to you, thank you all for being so pa ent as we are contac ng members and it will be our pleasure to honor you and to recognize your 50 years dedica on in our ins tu on. Where does the me go? I feel as if we were just installed as officers last week! Nonetheless great to see all the new young blood of brethren working hard! I thank you for your pa ence and dedica on! Together we will break off all the rough and superfluous parts of stone. Congrats to Bro. Stepan and Bro. Tigran on their ini a on, they are a great assets to our ins tu on. I look forward to sharing ideas with all of you, and thank you to those that have approached me and expressed their vision of the lodge in the following Let the beauty we love be what we do. Lastly April is an important month for educa on, as I'm part of the public schools advisory council for the Grand Lodge in this vicinity, we will hold a kickoff event on April 9th at 9AM at Cleveland elementary in Pasadena. 4 The Cable Tow If a lodge is a symbol of the world, and ini a on is our birth into the world of Masonry, the cable tow is not unlike the cord which unites a child to its mother at birth; and so it is usually interpreted. Just as the physical cord, when cut, is replaced by a e of love and obliga on between mother and child, so, in one of the most impressive moments of ini a on, the cable tow is removed, because the brother, by his oath at the Altar of Obliga on, is bound by a e stronger than any physical cable. What before was an outward physical restraint has become a inward moral constraint. That is to say, force is replaced by love outer authority by inner obliga on and that is the secret of security and the only basis of brotherhood. The cable tow is the sign of the pledge of the life of a man. As in his oath he agrees to forfeit his life if his vow is violated, so, posi vely, he pledges his life to the service of the Cra. He agrees to go to the aid of a Brother, using all his power in his behalf, "if within the length of his cable tow," which means, if within the reach of his power. How strange that any one should fail to see symbolical meaning in the cable tow. It is, indeed, the great symbol of the mys c e which Masonry spins and weaves between men, making them Brothers and helpers one of another. But, let us remember that a cable tow has two ends. If it binds a Mason to the Fraternity, by the same fact it binds the Fraternity to each man in it. The one obliga on needs to be emphasized as much as the other. Happily, in our day we are beginning to see the other side of the obliga on that the Fraternity is under vows to its members to guide, instruct and train them for the effec ve service of the Cra and of humanity. Control, obedience, direc on or guidance these are the three meanings of the cable tow, as it is interpreted by the best insight of the Cra. In the modern world we do not like to think that one person may be be er than another so what makes masons or masonry special? Would you see no difference between George Washington and Benedict Arnold? Or a man who devotes his life to the poor and is the friend and protector to those without any other friend or protector. Or a man who lines his own pockets with gold no ma er whom he may have harmed or impoverished. All men may be created equal and all men are and should be equal in the eyes of the lord, but they are in no means equal in how they develop what they choose to become. To me, to be accepted in Masonry is such an honor, to be in the same fraternity of such great men as George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, or Voltaire and Mozart, John Marshall, etc... This is why to me Masons are special, because we share a common ideology of be ering ourselves and be ering those which are near us in turn be ering our community and leaving something special for the next genera on. 4 9

5 Where are YOU Going Mardi Gras Party We are o en told that if we study hard and get a good job, and work hard and save our money, someday we can rest and enjoy the fruit of our labors. Well, here s a unique twist on this message... A boat docked in a ny Mexican village. An American tourist complimented the Mexican fisherman on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took him to catch them. Not very long, answered the Mexican. But then, why didn t you stay out longer and catch more? asked the American. The Mexican explained that his small catch was sufficient to meet his needs and those of his family. The American asked, But what do you do with the rest of your me? I sleep late, fish a li le, play with my children, and take a siesta with my wife. In the evenings, I go into the village to see my friends, play the guitar, and sing a few songs... I have a full life. The American interrupted, I have an MBA from Harvard, and I can help you! You should start by fishing longer every day. You can then sell the extra fish you catch. With the extra revenue, you can buy a bigger boat. And a er that? asked the Mexican. With the extra money the larger boat will bring, you can buy a second one and a third one and so on un l you have an en re fleet of trawlers. Instead of selling your fish to a middle man, you can then nego ate directly with the processing plants and maybe even open your own plant. You can then leave this li le village and move to Mexico City, Los Angeles, or even New York City! From there you can direct your huge new enterprise. How long would that take? asked the Mexican. Twenty, perhaps twenty five years, replied the American. And a er that? A erwards? Well my Friend, That s when it gets really interes ng, answered the American, laughing. When your business gets really big, you can start selling stocks and make millions! Millions? Really? And a er that? said the Mexican. A er that you ll be able to re re, live in a ny village near the coast, sleep late, play with your children, catch a few fish, take a siesta with your wife and spend your evenings doing what you like and enjoying your friends.
