1 ARTHUR MARRIOTT I am so sorry to receive this news. Arthur was a good friend and one time partner. In 1981 when Masons had decided to open an office in Hong Kong, I contacted Arthur to discuss the merits of a Joint Venture with him. We met in the bar of the Mandarin Hotel a few weeks later and agreed the terms of our partnership as Masons and Marriott which we noted on a napkin and initialled. He was thereafter a great partner and contributor to our business until he was required to withdraw when he joined an American Law Firm. I remember how amused he was that when we had our first party after he withdrew and we had become just Masons we held the party at the Marriott Hotel. John Bishop Dear Chief Justice Menon, Thanks, I heard the sad news only yesterday. He lived a full life, admired by friends and compatriots. We were together in ICCA for ten long years and I soon realised that he was not only steps-ahead-of-the-market, but deliberations his wisdom was invaluable. He was a great friend of India I recall that he accompanied me many years ago to meet C.J.I A. S. Anand to impress upon him the need for enforcement of foreign awards in India being dealt with directly and finally by the Supreme Court alone. The Chief Justice and Judges agreed that it was a good idea but like many good ideas it soon evaporated! It must be approaching 40 years since I first met Arthur. He came to Hong Kong regularly in the 70s and 80s. My first encounter was not my fondest memory of Arthur as he was representing a contractor on a project on which my firm were acting as consulting engineers. It that context he was a formidable adversary but we soon became friends. In due course he set up Masons and Marriott in Hong Kong. He invited me to its inaugural cocktails and that was more than 30 years ago. I have not seen much of Arthur in recent years but I still have happy memories of his visits and his help with the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre. He will be missed by the construction and the arbitration communities around the globe as a truly great character and a charming but incisive lawyer. Peter Scott Caldwell This is indeed sad news. I was lucky enough to work with Arthur (a great friend of my former head of chambers, Mark Littman QC) in a number of contexts and respected and admired his intellect generally and analytical ability in particular firsthand. He indeed was a powerful force in the World of International Arbitration. His contribution was indeed pathbreaking. He was indeed well regarded by the Indian Arbitrating Community and made an indelible mark, both professionally and personally, on lot of us here in India. While he will be remembered for a long time by all those who came across him thru his Life 's journey, his death is a grim reminder of challenges faced by all irrespective of our successes in Professional lives. We must introspect and realise that nothing is permanent in Life like our own Lives.
