THE SCIENCE AND ART OF OPENING YOUR HEART TELESUMMIT DR. BRUCE LIPTON WITH RONNA PRINCE OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT Official Transcript of Interview 2013 Global Wholeness Corp, All Rights Reserved My next guest is Dr. Bruce Lipton. I was introduced to him by a colleague of my partner, Dr. Donald Backstrom, Doug Parks and I m grateful for all of the connections that have brought this event together. Bruce H. Lipton Ph.D. is an internationally recognized leader in bridging science and spirit. He s a stem cell biologist and bestselling author of his newest book, The Honeymoon Effect, as well as The Biology of Belief. He s a recipient of the 2009 Goi Peace Award and has been a speaker on hundreds of TV and radio shows and a keynote presenter for national and international conferences. He began his career as a cellular biologist and got a Ph.D. at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. His research at Stanford University School of Medicine revealed that the environment operating through the cell membrane controlled the behavior and physiology of the cell turning genes on and off. This really ran counter to the established scientific view that life is controlled by genes and it created one of the most important fields of study today, the science of epigenetics. His unique scientific approach not only transformed science as we know it, but it changed his own personal life. Still to this day he continues to hear from people whose lives have been transformed by attending his workshops and reading his books. It is my pleasure and honor of welcoming Dr. Bruce Lipton to our event today. I am so happy to be here too, because I think that the work you re trying to do is so important for the evolution on our planet right now and that people must really learn who they are and really be able to touch their own hearts. I thank you for your efforts. I m glad that it resonates with you. I know people are searching for answers, and they re searching in a number of different ways in both spirituality and science, Page 1 of 23

hence our title The Science and Art of Opening Your Heart. I think it would be a great way to start our interview time together if you could share with everyone listening how you went from being what we call an atheist or scientist to a spiritual scientist. How did that happen? I was a conventional biologist with the belief that life was just a bunch of chemicals, DNA, proteins, all interacting and that it s a machine. Then you re born and then you die, and that was your little shot at it. In my research on trying to understand how cells work I started to get into an insight about what makes us as individual people. What I started to recognize was that cells in our body are unique. The first premise is this: there are no two people that are biologically the same. That s really important to understand. Meaning that if I try to take my cells or tissues out of my body and put it into your body, your immune system will say not-self. If you put your cells or tissues into somebody else s body their immune system will say not-self. The first thing is this. Cells have an identity that are connected to us. The cells in your body have a unique identity that s associated with you, and the cells in my body have an identity associated with me, every one of us. The question that I was working on is where is this identity coming from that makes us all unique? The answer as I resolved it, is an understanding of how the cell worked. On the surface of our cells there are sets of little protein antennas. They re almost like little television antennas that pick up environmental information, and no two people have the same set of antennas. In medicine, a large number of these antennas are called self-receptors, which is literally exactly what they are, receivers of self. What medicine uses them for is this: if I want to transplant a heart into a recipient, I have to make sure that the self-receptors on the donated heart match as many of the self-receptors on the recipient cells, because the closer the match, the less the immune rejection response. That s what they do, tissue typing. They look to see is this heart useful for this person. They have to compare how many of the self-receptors are shared between the donor and the recipient. This interesting understanding led to the identity of individuals as they picked up these receptors. Conventional science says the difference between two people are these receptors. They re actually misunderstanding. The receptors are receiving an environmental signal. The receptors represent an antenna tuned to an environmental information source. The relevance about that is this: your identity, my identity, the identity of each individual on this planet, is actually expressed in some information picked up from the environment that plays through the cell. Page 2 of 23

To give a quick analogy, a human body is like a television set and the antennas are tuned to a station. I m playing The Bruce Show right now. The significance is, I m picking up a broadcast on my receptors that plays through my biology. The moment I understood that was the moment I realized, oh my goodness, my identity is not built into my body. My identity is picked up from a broadcast in the environment. Going back to the television analogy, if you re watching a show on television and the picture tube breaks you say the television is dead. Yeah, the show is no longer playing anymore. But the more important question you might ask is, the television died, did the broadcast die? The answer is, no, the broadcast is always there. How would you know? You get another TV, plug it in, turn it on and then tune it to the station, and voila, the show is back on the air. I realized, oh my goodness, a human body is like this television set. In this body I m playing The Bruce Show right now. If I die, it doesn t change my broadcast because my broadcast is not built into my body. It s part of the environment. Just like we mentioned with the television story, if the body dies the broadcast is still there, and in the future, if an embryo shows up with the exact same set of identity receptors that are on my cells right now I m back on the air but in a different television set. All of a sudden, it explained the nature of our sources as being an energy from the field. The field, that s a physics term for the invisible matrix of energy that we are living in. It s very interesting because quantum physicists talk about the field. They say definition of field is invisible moving forces that influence the physical world. That s quantum physics. It turns out how interesting, because ancient people refer to spirit as invisible moving forces that influence the physical world. Today, modern physics is actually substantiating the original belief in spirituality, but now we re doing it through modern science. The fact is that not only does our information stay in a field, but as bodies come and go, a new body can pick up an existing station and that person is back on the air again in a sense, but in a different body. That sounds like a scientific explanation for reincarnation. Exactly. I know I m not the only one making that connection. Page 3 of 23

It makes sense out of things that we don t die. The most wonderful compelling story about that is they started recognizing that when people receive heart transplants from other people, they begin to pick up the characteristics of the people who donated the heart. You say, how can that happen? People say there s memory in the cells. I go, look, let s be honest. Heart cells don t have a memory of things like Chicken McNuggets and drinking beer. Where did that come from? The answer is this. The person dies. Their heart is still alive and put into another human, but the transplanted heart has antennas connected to the person who died. So even though the heart is transplanted into another body, it s still downloading the identity connected with the heart. As a person receives a heart transplant they re also receiving a receiver of another identity, which starts to manifest in this person as they start to acquire different characteristics associated with the person who donated the heart. That s a wonderful scientific insight into the fact that the identity is still in the field and can be picked up by any cells that have antennas tuned to that identity. So when you transplant a heart you re also transplanting the ability to download an identity. All of this substantiates a very important fact which I never believed in. That is we re actually spiritual entities having an opportunity to get into a physical human body. We re both spiritual and physical. The spiritual part, which really blew my mind, was immortal. Meaning, even if you die the broadcast is still there. All of a sudden this changed my entire life because I didn t even believe in spirituality. Now not only did I see the nature of that spirituality, but I also recognized that immortality is a consequence of understanding this. It s really great, because if you can know this with a true knowing, it changes life for us on this planet because all of us from the time we were young children acquired a fear of death. We saw that people get old and people die, and then we started to get scared as children that our parents are going to die. Then ultimately we started to recognize that even we re going to die. That fear is built into every human, our mortality. It weighs on us a lot. You don t know how much it weighs on you until it disappears, which happened to me because I didn t believe in spirituality and all that. But once I saw it as a scientific understanding, all of a sudden my life got so much easier. It got so much easier because I recognized I no longer was living in fear of the mortality issue. Life became freer because we don t recognize how much effort that our nervous system puts in to reading our environment and being on guard all of the time, 24/7 of being on guard about anything that could threaten your life because of our fear of death. Page 4 of 23

If you remove that fear then all of a sudden life gets so much easier because you don t even focus on that anymore, and it just becomes so much more wonderful to be on this planet. That is an understanding from a guy who was never spiritual, and then saw the character of spirituality and transformed my life virtually instantaneously. I have so many things to ask you. We have a similar concept in the film where we show the indigenous elders saying, Hey, we ve known this all along. Just because you scientists can now prove it, it doesn t mean we haven t always had this understanding. That s why specifically I included the elders in the film, because it s a nice reminder that now as Westerners, we can prove that there is an immortal part us that the indigenous people, who lived closer to the earth, have always remembered. This is why in my book, Spontaneous Evolution, I really emphasize the nature of the indigenous people because they were the people who lived in a world where spirituality and physicality were one and the same. They lived a spiritual existence in the physical world. This was the harmony and balance that we re trying to return to right now, because if you look at the history of Western civilization there was a period where we ignored the physical and started to get into the spiritual so much that, like for example, the church would say the earth is an impediment to your spiritual development because if you get caught up in the physical earth you lose your focus on spirituality. That s when the concept of having a physical life and physical possessions was considered as a very negative aspect by the church, because as I said, it took you away from spirituality. Then civilization let go of that spirituality when science took over and said it s all a physical world, and we left the spiritual out. Where we are in this evolution of Western civilization is now a return back to the indigenous peoples belief. Yes there is a spiritual component, yes there is a physical component and when you integrate the two you get a fuller more wonderful understanding of the nature of life. The beautiful gift of being alive as a human on this planet becomes emphasized in this because our physicality is an extension of our spirituality. For me it really connects all in the heart. That s the center of our body. It seems to be the center, connecting point for a lot of the traditions. I want to go back to where you were talking about heart transplants, because I ve never heard about Page 5 of 23

people getting a kidney transplant and having memories of the person that they got the kidney from. Is there something special about the heart? The heart is an electromagnet organ in the sense that we read heart activity by putting wires on a person and reading what is called the EKG, electrocardiogram. We can read the heart activity because the contraction of the muscles generates an electrical spark every time it contracts. The heart is like a broadcast system. It broadcasts energy out into the field. I could read your heart s electrical activity from meters away from you with a probe. I could read the electrical activity from your heart. Each one of us is like a tuning fork, where our heart is broadcasting a frequency out into the world. These frequencies connect us together because there s a basic human frequency in addition to our individual frequency. So all of us are connected by the heart, and each one of us is slightly different because there s a unique frequency added to that that makes us individuals. This important thing is in the world of physics we start to recognize that energy entangles with each other, so that the heart beat of one person will resonate with the heart beat of another person and energy will go back and forth between them connecting the energy field. We re so preoccupied with the physical field that we really don t put much emphasis on the nature of the energy, but it turns out in quantum physics the energy is the shaping factor of the physical world. Our heart energy is totally influential in shaping our physical life expression. Because it s such a powerful force and broadcasts out into the world that we re like little broadcast systems sending out heart information to all those around us who are resonating with that. We re connected by heart. Not the physical heart, but the energetic heart. Energy is the entangling process that connects all humans together. In your book, The Honeymoon Effect, and I know people are really wanting to hear about the chemistry of love, the biochemistry of love. You talk about the brain as the tuning fork also. Is it just that we can measure the heart so much further away from the body than the brain that sometimes we hear that heart is more powerful? I know they interact. What part does the brain have in the interaction part of the signal? Let s give an analogy for a second. Let s say I have a favorite guitarist and he plays an acoustic instrument. If you want to hear the guitarist we can get very close to him. Get a bunch of people, sit around him and he plays the guitar and a small audience will be able to hear that guitar. Page 6 of 23

But if this guy goes into an arena with 25,000 or 30,000 people in it, his acoustic guitar isn t going to obviously penetrate that crowd. Only a few people will be able to hear him. What we use is an amplifier that picks up the guitar sound and through the speakers allows 25,000 or 30,000 people to hear this guy play the acoustic guitar. In our biology the brain activity is like the guitar. The brain activity is a low energy frequency, but it s got all the information in it. A heart is like an amplifier because it s such a powerful electronic transmitter sending out this big electronic beating energy. What actually happens is when we learn to connect our mind with our heart, then the message that represents low energy from the brain is amplified by the heart and sent out into the world. All of a sudden your brain and your thoughts and your messages are not just contained within you or felt very locally around you. But once you get your energy picked up by your heart and broadcast out, it s sort of like at that coliseum where the energy is broadcasting that acoustic information to a large number of people. This is what happens when we bring the heart into alignment with the brain. Then the heart amplifies our brain activity, which is very important because the brain energy is what is shaping our life experiences. When you come from your heart and your thoughts are being picked up and transmitted by your heart, then your thoughts are more easily turned into a physical reality. If you were having thoughts of love and peace and harmony and you re broadcasting that with your heart, other people all around will be picking up on that music that would be coming from you. We get a chance to broadcast our intentions into the world, and with that amplification from the heart it actually facilitates a manifestation of our intentions. If your intention is in your head and not connected to your heart, the transmission of that intention energy doesn t go very far so it doesn t have a great influence. But if you take that information and then amplify it with the heart, then your intention energy is effective in influencing and shaping the world around you. I think that s really going to help people understand the importance of bringing your heart online and making that connection. That s what we re talking about all week. I know also in your new book you talk about why it s real. When we re really reading energy, it s quantum physics-based. Can you explain that? Maybe you have an analogy for that one too, that we re not just reading auras and woowoo, but there s something real to ready energy of other people. Page 7 of 23

Absolutely. The first level of communication, when we talk about communication between people we talk about, I m talking to you, you re listening and then you re talking to me and I m listening and we re using sound as a communication This is a much later evolution of communication, because the first level of communication from the most primitive organisms up is an electromagnetic vibration. Energy, every organism that s in energy and every organism receives energy and every organism is unique with its own energy. So that in the field, organisms communicate first via energy, and later in evolution we acquired other means of communicating. First there was voice, and then of course we did telephones and then we got into cell phones and then we got into computers and Internet. All these are late forms of communication via evolution, but the primary communication was sensory feeling of energy. In our world, although we rely primarily on voice communication and writing communication and all that, the primal communication has always been vibrational energy. In our world, as I said, we really have let go of the primal communication, except in our bodies every now and then we feel these vibes in our body. In the world of humans we talk about these vibes and we put them in two categories. We talk about good vibes and bad vibes. What does it represent? These are non-verbal communications that relay information. This is how all organisms on the earth communicate. Humans have just extended it through the technology of voice and electronics and writing and all that. But all organisms from the most primitive bacteria to the human, the primary communication is vibration. The significance about the vibration is this. When you look at the vibration, two vibrations can come together and create harmony or two vibrations can come together and create noise. The significance is when the vibrations create harmony we experience that as an enhancement of our life. Harmony and energy enhance our life, and that s when we say good vibes. I m feeling good vibes being around this person or being in this place. I feel good vibes, meaning I get more energized by the energy in the field because it s in harmony. It s resonating with me. Good vibes is what we call it. But we also get messages when we re in the wrong place, that when our life is threatened or energy is in some way being shortened or curtailed. Energy is related to life, of course. The more energy you have the more life you have, and when you run out of energy you run out of life. Page 8 of 23

When you re in a place where your energy is interacting with the field but it causes noise, it reduces your energy level and you could feel a weakening of your system. That s what we refer to as bad vibes. Our level of communication is still there at the vibrational level, but we really said in the way we grew in human civilization is don t go by your feelings. Listen to what somebody has to say. I believe that this was one of the biggest mistakes we ever made in civilization, because the primary communication is vibration. So a person could tell you all the sweet flowery words and give you all kinds of verbal assurances that they re your friend and they re going to support you and all that. But you can tell more directly on the vibration, the energy, what you feel from them, more than the words, because I can make up any words I want but the vibration of who I am is who I am and I can t change that. If I m really not your friend but I come on to you and tell you I m going to support you, I m going to help you and all that, giving you all these words of encouragement, if you listen to the words only you would think, Bruce is going to help me. But if you feel the vibration and you start to feel less energy, I feel weaker, I feel a bad vibe. That is the more accurate understanding of the relationship than the words are. That s why it really becomes important for us to go back and say feelings are a more primary fundamental level of communication than our words. Words can be manifested and created in any way to say whatever the heck I want, but feelings are more accurate of actually what the individual represents. That s why we really should go back and start to own the power of our feelings. The heart, as I said, is not only sending out these vibrations but it s also receiving it. You feel in your heart more or less the good vibes and the bad vibes, because that s the electronic device that s reading the fields. You answered the next question I had in your book, what do you mean by this: Language is designed to hide feelings? I put a big question mark by that, and you must described it. That s the answer. I say in part of the film, that for me feelings create the connection. It s not the mind. It s how we feel. We re certainly not in school educating kids about this at all. A few parents are educating their children on how to trust their feelings. Do you see a shift in that from where you are, in what s happening in the school systems with kids and how they re being educated? The unfortunate part about the education system, it s almost all disempowering. The significance about that is control and manipulation of people. If I really empower you, then the manipulators of the world in which we live wouldn t have Page 9 of 23

the effectiveness that they have. The manipulators now with advertising and their words, they can act as if they re sincere and real and yet that s an act because underneath it they have some other motivation or some intention that s not really supportive. So there s a tendency for keeping us shrouded and really losing that communication. For me it was really important because once I started to catch on to the nature of the vibrational energy field around us, and that energy field is information. That s a very important difference that people need to talk about. We talk about, I use it loosely, new age biology, and they talk about energy. I have to say, there s two aspects of energy that people confuse. One, energy is power. Like a battery, it has energy to power things to make it work. But energy can also be information. A broadcast from a radio station is an energy field. It s not powerful to light your house up and do that. That s an energy that s not a power energy, but it s an energy that carries information. The energy around us does two things. We use energy for power, but we also use energy for information. That s why the non-verbal communication, the levels of energy of that is for information. If I cover up that energy or get you not to focus on that energy, then really what I m doing is, I m disconnecting you from the information field. Remember, knowledge is power. If you don t get the information you don t have the power and you don t have the knowledge. That s what weakens us. So an awakening that we have to have right now, as you mentioned in your film, we have to start recognizing that these feelings are more truthful in the information they convey than is the information that comes from speaking or writing or any of the newer technologies. I wholeheartedly agree because I think it s the feelings that will help us create the solutions out there that the world needs. I want to have you describe to us what is a heaven on earth relationship, because I thoroughly enjoyed your book. I devoured it in a couple of days, and then I went back and really absorbed it. I love the title, The Science of Creating Heaven on Earth. Let s go right into relationships and how feelings and the biochemistry all play into it to create this lasting love. What s really exciting about it is, I asked people to go back to a time in their lives. Everybody at one time or another had a love experience. It may have not lasted very long, but there was a short life experience of being in love. I say let s go back to that time. Get your mind back to a time where you fell head over heels in love with somebody. Page 10 of 23

I asked three general questions. Number one I say, were you healthy when you fell in love? Almost everyone says they were exuberantly healthy. They were glowing in love. That s a characteristic of love is they say, Look at that person, they re glowing. That s an expression of when you re in love the harmony of that love energy enhances your biology and physiology. So people in love are generally much healthier than people that are not in love. Secondly I say go back to the time you fell in love. I say, did you have a lot of energy when you fell in love? Everybody laughs because they know that they made love for days without stopping for food or sleep and energy was overflowing. When you re in love all this energy comes in. The last, and what I think is a very important question, is I say, when you were experiencing that love was life so beautiful that you couldn t wait for the next day to have more of that experience? Almost everyone goes absolutely. Life was so beautiful when they fell in love. I go, look, you had health, you had energy, life was so beautiful you couldn t wait for the next day to have more. I say, is that like heaven on earth? You were living exactly what you wanted to experience. People go yeah. I go here s the most important point, that wasn t a coincidence or an accident. We manifested heaven on earth. No matter how crummy your life may have been right up until you met that special person, the moment you meet them all of a sudden there s a whole new world. You re living in this beautiful world where your heart is just blowing out and love is all over and you re so excited. I go, did the world change? No, you changed. What did you do? You manifested a different life when you were in love than you were experiencing before love. What I really wanted to get people to understand was, again, this was not just a coincidence. This is a manifestation. Why is this important? Because it wasn t an accident. You created that. Why is that important? The answer was you actually can create heaven on earth. When you did that you fell in love. Unfortunately for most people it doesn t last a long time, and then life becomes more back to so-called normal again after a period of time. Then what the book The Honeymoon Effect emphasizes is number one you manifested, you created heaven on earth, and you were also involved with losing that experience. The whole idea of the book is to explain how you created it, and as importantly, how did you lose it. The net understanding of this is very simple. If you know how you created heaven on earth and you know the reason why you lost it, then think of this logically. With that knowledge you can recreate heaven on earth and make it every day of your life. You can live that love, that juiciness, that honeymoon experience, as a way of life every day of your life. Page 11 of 23

This is available to us. Again, it s because there s an understanding of how we personally created that and why we lost it. Knowledge is power, and with that knowledge you have the power to manifest it as an everyday way of life. How do we recreate it? Those people that are listening that are in a long-term relationship and they re going through the motions. Is there something that they can do or is it just the knowledge itself that helps them get back to that wonderful place? The first thing is the knowledge, because if I just said, What a coincidence, I fell in love and then I lost it, and then you say, How can I do it again? You say, I don t know. It was just a coincidence. I go, No, no. This is how you did it. The first thing is this. The new biology recognizes that the mind controls our behavior and our genetics. Our entire biology we used to think was controlled by our genes. That s the old belief system, that genes caused diseases and cancers and things like that. It turns out, no, they don t. Genes don t cause anything. It s our mind that controls our genetics and our biology. Then I say, wait, you have to recognize there are two parts to the mind. They re interdependent, meaning they re not exactly the same thing but they work together. The two minds are the conscious mind and the subconscious mind. They learn in different ways and they have primarily different functions. Let s emphasize this, because the issues of our world, whether it s related to love or related to creation of war or violence on this planet, is connected to the relationship of these two minds. If you understand how they work then you are given a power to take charge of it and manifest what you want. Let s go very quickly and say, how do the two minds differ from each other? Number one, the conscious mind is the latest evolutionary addition to the brain. It s a part of your brain right behind your forehead called the prefrontal cortex. That s where the conscious mind is centered. The conscious mind is connected to our uniqueness, our individuality, our spirit. This is where we have our identity. It s in the conscious mind. The conscious mind is therefore connected to source. It s also a creative mind. That s the most beautiful part about the evolution of consciousness because with that mind you can create ideas and you can create visions. So this becomes very important because if I say to you, tell me what you want out of your life, the answer comes from the conscious mind. That s creative. That s saying if I could create my life what would I want? I say I want to be healthy. I want to be happy. I want to have great love. I go, oh yeah, that s the Page 12 of 23

creative vision of the conscious mind. I say, this is really cool. The conscious mind is the source of the uniqueness of humans. Then you say, what about the subconscious mind? I say, oh. The subconscious mind is the habit mind. It s not a creative mind essentially. It s a habit mind. It s the one that learns from an experience and downloads the experience as a program. After that, whenever you need that program you push the button and it automatically plays so you don t have to relearn again. For example, go back to when you were an infant and you tried to learn how to walk. It wasn t built into your mind. You had to learn how to walk. There was that trial and error period where young kids between one and two try to stand up and try to walk, and during that process their brain is downloading the neurological connections from the experience of walking. The point is this. We know how to walk. Do you have to think how to walk anymore? No, it s automatic. You don t even have to say I m going to walk in the other room. You just have the intention of being in the other room and the brain will automatically do the walking to get you there. The subconscious mind is a wonderful asset because it says once we learn a program, we don t have to relearn it over and over and over again. Once you learn it, it will run automatically. Like driving a car, think about that. You didn t know how to drive a car. You had to learn through practice and experience. You practiced and you practiced and you created a habit. Once you learn the habit it s in the subconscious mind. When you got in the car when you were 16, it was overwhelming. You had to look at all the mirrors, look out the windows, pay attention to all the gauges, the pedals. Wow, there was so much you learned. Today you get in the car and your intention is to go to the store, you don t think about the details of driving. It s automatic. Once you learn, the benefit of the subconscious mind is, you don t have to learn every day. The subconscious mind is not a creative mind. It s sort of a record playback mind. It plays back habits. Here comes the problem. The problem is before consciousness can be used by a child, a child has to have data. In other words, I can t think of something if I don t have any information to think about. Another analogy to make sense out of that is if I buy you a brand new ipod and you take it out of the box and I say, Okay, push play. Make a playlist. Like the conscious mind, create a playlist. Create. You just open up the box, you take out the ipod and I say create a playlist. You say, Nothing happens. I say, Why Page 13 of 23

not? The answer is you ve got no programs. You don t have anything to select from. So you have to download the programs and then you could be creative by making a playlist. In a child s mind, a child is born without any data. In an imaginary situation, let s say if a child could speak the moment it s born and the child is just coming out of the birth canal and is looking around and you say to this infant as it s being born, you say, Hello, welcome. Tell me something. The infant would look up at you and say, I don t know anything. I just got here. Basically, before a child can be conscious a child has to have data. Now we know that the first seven years of our life the brain is operating at a lower vibrational frequency than conscious as a predominant brain state. It s in an EEG frequency called theta, which is imagination. That s why children, especially through age seven, mix the real and the imaginary world together because their brain is operating at theta imagination. But theta is also hypnosis. How is this relevant? The first seven years of your life you download all the information of how to be a member of a family, a community, a society, all the rules of being a productive citizen. How did you learn all this stuff as an infant? The answer was your brain is predominantly in theta until seven, meaning it is under hypnosis. Everything you observe is then downloaded as a program. You observe your mother, your father, your siblings. You see how they behave and how they respond to life, and you record that. Your subconscious mind is like a tape recorder. It s recording, but the behavior it is recording is not your behavior. It s the behavior that other people are expressing and you re downloading it. You don t have any behavior. You have to record behavior. More importantly, and this becomes very critical, as an infant we have to find out who are we as individuals. Who am I as an individual? In the first seven years the only way you know who you are is that other people tell you who you are. Your parents say, Oh, you re the most wonderful, loving child that ever came on this planet. You have the greatest potential to do anything you want. I go yeah, right. Most people didn t have that. Most people got, Who do you think you are? You don t deserve that. You re not smart enough. You re not lovable. Parents say that not to punish the child. The parents are saying that as a coach would say to a team member who s not really performing up to snuff. The coach is pushing on that individual, Come on. You can work harder. You can do better. A person who is conscious will understand the intention of the coach. The coach is trying to say you perform better and you re going to do much better. It s going to be great. Page 14 of 23

But if a child remembers not expressing consciousness essentially for the first seven years and a parent says to them, Not good enough. You could try harder. You could do better. The child isn t consciously interpreting what the parents say. The child is just recording what the parents say. What kinds of learning do I have about myself and my subconscious? Direct recordings. I m not good enough. I m not smart enough. I m not deserving. It s just downloading what they say. These programs, the first seven years, are the programs that are the fundamental programs in your subconscious mind. Here comes the problem. You do become conscious at around seven. You start using that conscious activity, alpha consciousness in EEG terms of creative consciousness. I go that s really cool, but I say you re basing your consciousness on the programs that you already acquired from the first seven years of download. The biggest problem that humans face is this. The conscious mind is not only creative, but it also has another character. It s not time-bound. Meaning I say, What are you doing next week? Your conscious mind lets go of the current moment and visualizes into next week. Or I say, Hey, what did you do last Wednesday? Your conscious mind lets go of the current moment and travels back to Wednesday last week to say what you did on that day. Or I say imagine this, and what happens, is your conscious mind lets go of the current moment, goes into your head and has an imagination. The common factor in all of those three situations is the conscious mind not being time-bound to move into the future, move into the past, disconnect from the current moment. The problem is if the conscious mind s not paying attention because it s thinking then who s running the show? That s the nature of the default. The default is this. Because the conscious mind is not time-bound, it can think, whenever it s not paying attention the default kicks in and plays a preexisting program in the subconscious. Everything you know how to do is already been programmed, how to communicate with people, how to do your job, how to walk, how to drive a car. It s already built in there, so you don t have to think about it. But the problem is this. The fundamental programs in the subconscious mind are really derived from other people. They don t necessarily have your wishes, your desires, your aspirations. That s what the conscious mind is all about. The moment your conscious mind is not paying attention, you kick into a previously downloaded program. But this program might be a dysfunctional program the way your parents were behaving which wasn t really a good thing, whatever behavior they were expressing. Or you ll kick into the program about yourself, not good enough, not smart enough, not deserving. If those are the programs that are playing then your Page 15 of 23

behavior will match the program. If you ve got a program of not good enough, then whatever you re working on if the subconscious kicks in and is managing it it s going to do it with a program of not good enough, meaning whatever you re working on won t turn out really good. Here s the last piece that will put the puzzle together. When the conscious mind is busy and not paying attention it doesn t see the behavior that is defaulting from the subconscious. To explain that in my lecture I say, listen, I m sure you had a friend when you were younger and you knew your friend s behavior very, very well, and you happened to know your friend s parent. You start to recognize that your friend shares some of the same behavior as their parent. You do a casual volunteer like, Hey, you know Bill, you re just like your dad. You back away from Bill, and Bill s the first guy that says, How can you compare me to my dad? He s actually upset that you made that comparison. This is a profoundly important story for this reason. Everyone else can see that Bill behaves like his dad. The only one that doesn t see it is Bill. Why doesn t he see it? The answer is because when he s playing that behavior, which he downloaded by observing his dad, why is he playing it? The answer is because his conscious mind is not paying attention. When he s playing this behavior his conscious mind doesn t even see it. To give another analogy, the same kind of story, we talked about driving the car. I say driving the car, once you learn how to drive the car it s a subconscious program. You don t have to think about it. You get in the car, put the key in and there you go down the road. I say imagine this. You get in the car. You re going to some destination. You have a friend in the passenger seat, and as you re driving you get really into this great discussion. It s real exciting. Your conscious mind is working on this discussion, talking to this other person, paying attention to them. At some point you look out the windshield and you look at the road and you realize, oh my God, I haven t paid attention to the road for the last five or ten minutes. I was so involved in the conversation. I go, what happened was your conscious mind was focusing on the conversation. I go, who was driving the car? The answer was the subconscious program. Then I go here comes the critical part. I say, what did you talk about in your conversation with your friend? You go, Oh, we talked about this and this and this. I go, great. Then I say, what happened on the road for that five or ten minutes while you were having the conversation? The answer is, I don t know. I didn t see it. Page 16 of 23

I go, this is the story of Bill. When Bill s conscious mind is tied up the behavior comes from the subconscious, but because the conscious mind was paying attention, Bill doesn t see that the behavior he is expressing is his father s behavior. To him that s like, how can you say that? The important thing to understand is that everybody else can see that Bill is doing his father s behavior. The only one who doesn t see it is Bill. This becomes important. That s a profound point. But the second profound point from that story is we are all Bill. We are all living in a world where our conscious mind can be in charge, but if it starts thinking or processing information it defaults to the subconscious. But the programs in the subconscious don t necessarily support our wishes, our desires, what we want from life. So now we have to recognize we have two aspects of life. When we re controlling it with our conscious mind, our behavior is based on our wishes and our desires and our aspirations. When we start using the subconscious to control our life it s based on the programs. Science has given us a very startling fact, and that is this, 95% or more of our life comes from the subconscious programs. The reason is the conscious mind is flitting about from thought to thought to thought, thinking about this and that and that, and whenever the conscious mind is thinking about something it s not paying attention. It turns out 95% of our life the behavior is coming from our programming and we don t see it. Most of the programming psychologists tell us, 70% or more of that programming is negative and disempowering. It says 95% of our life we re playing these programs that are sabotaging us and we don t see them because the conscious mind was busy. Then it s like our life doesn t work out and then we say the universe is against me, and we didn t realize 95% of the life we were creating we were creating with programs that don t represent who we are. Now we put all that pieced together. Sorry I went so long on this, but then we can come to the conclusion here about falling in love. This is the interesting fact, 95% of our life on a day-by-day basis is coming from the programs in our subconscious mind. Science has also recognized this. When you fall in love with somebody, head over heels in love with them, you actually keep your conscious mind in the present moment. It s called being mindful. Why is that relevant? Because if your conscious mind stays in charge, then all your behavior is based on your wishes, your desires and your aspirations. When two people fall in love rather than operating from subconscious programs they re operating from their creative conscious mind. What do they create Page 17 of 23

together? Wishes and desires. What does that manifest as? The honeymoon. Life was perfect. It was just what you wanted. Everything was great. As long as you keep in the conscious mind you operate from those wishes and desires. I say what happened to the honeymoon? Then it becomes obvious. It goes like this. Life gets busy. When life gets busy you have to think about doing the job fixing the car, paying the rent. Every time your thoughts start to move away from the current moment and start thinking about the things you have to do and all that kind of stuff, every time that happens you shift into the subconscious preprogrammed behavior. But most of those behaviors came from other people. They re not your behaviors. Here s the story. You re in love. You re creating heaven on earth. Life is great. All of a sudden my partner Margaret comes up to me, and I happen to be thinking about these chores that I have to do. She asks me a simple loving question. We ve been living in this love. She asked me a simple loving question and then I turn around and go, Blah, blah, blah! She looks at me with this famous line, Who are you? Where did that come from? Then you have to realize the behavior I just used wasn t from my wishes and desires, the behavior that I ve been using throughout the honeymoon. I just played my father s behavior and I didn t even see it. Now there s a funny situation. She says to me, Who are you? I m trying to think of, What the heck is she talking about? I didn t see what I just said. I didn t see it at all. But now I realize I m being accused of not being myself, so I get defensive. What does that mean? When you get defensive you put a barrier up to protect yourself. In a loving relationship that s the honeymoon there are no barriers. But the moment I ve been accused of not being me I start to distance myself from Margaret because now I m saying I don t know what the heck she s talking about. I didn t even see what I just said because it was the automatic behavior. So we break down our communication. In addition, as more life starts intruding on our relationship then more of the time is spend playing those programs in the subconscious mind. But then realizing those programs aren t our wishes and desires. They re somebody else s behavior. What happens is at first you create honeymoon experience, wishes and desires manifested between two people who are operating from their conscious minds. Then as life starts to intervene and we have to start thinking, we start playing some of these behaviors that are actually not ours but from our family. These behaviors were never part of the honeymoon. As a matter of fact, if you played Page 18 of 23

some of those behaviors on your first date you may have not had a second date because of your crummy behavior. Here s the point. You had this honeymoon, and all of a sudden these behaviors start showing up that were like where did that come from, who are you, those kinds of responses. The individual who just played those behaviors is totally oblivious to the fact that they even did it because it was from the subconscious programming. The walls start to come up. Compromises start to come into relationship because it s like that s a really sucky behavior and I don t really like it. But hey look, we had this great honeymoon, so okay, I ll put up with that behavior. That s compromise one. But then another behavior comes, and now that s compromise two. At some point maybe too many of these compromises come and then you realize this relationship is no longer anything the way it was when we started. That s when two people look at each other and think how did something that was so beautiful go so bad? The answer was this: It was going so beautifully because you were operating from creative conscious mind, wishes and desires. It started going bad when the subconscious was introducing behaviors that are not you, that are not your wishes and desires but you re playing them without being aware of it. As a result you re sabotaging the relationship and not even knowing you re doing it. Then the relationship falls apart and you go out, and guess what, you repeat the same program over again with the next person you meet. In your book you have a whole section, so people know before we run out of time here, about belief change modalities. There s a lot to do with what you ve suggested, and I m a big fan of psyche and reprogramming the subconscious mind. I ve done a bunch of them. The other thing I really enjoy about what you ve written in your book besides all the biochemistry, is just in the last couple of weeks since I ve read your book I ve used a couple simple techniques. Here s good example. A few weeks ago, Donald, my partner, was sick. He wanted me to get him something to eat or something. All of a sudden I blurted out, Men are such babies when they re sick. What a jerky thing to say. Then I realized, I just ran my mom s program! Instead of having to feel bad that he s mad at me, we just did what you suggested in the book. We sat there together. We physically connected. Then instead of having that be an incident, it was just a few moments and we got to move on. It was such a great example of that. That s the other thing I like about your book is you have a lot of information about what to do. Something so simple in a relationship is just to make that Page 19 of 23
