1 Bi-annual Newsletter of the Sisters of Charity Spirituality Center Bi-annual Newsletter of the Sisters of Charity Spirituality Center December 2010 A Message from the Director... SISTERS OF CHARITY LABYRINTH RENOVATED A beautiful and shared labor of love Such were words used to describe the experience of laboring during the months of May through September to give the labyrinth on the Sisters of Charity property a well needed new look. Our thanks are extended to Sallie Hilvers and Elizabeth TenOver who not only spent many hours of labor during the hot summer months, but also recruited many other volunteers. About 12 adults helped, along with 19 students from St. X, LaSalle, Elder, Ursuline Academy and St. Ursula who spent many energy consuming hours working under the guidance of adults. Sallie, who is a member of The Labyrinth Society, noted the labyrinth was in need of TLC while walking the labyrinth in late April. Elizabeth, an avid labyrinth walker herself, met Sallie and offered to help with the renovation. Thus, the project began. Elizabeth commented that each session was graced with needed conversation, occasional exhaustion dissolved by cool water and wet towels, the gift of laughter, timely encounters with passers by, and the sounds and beauty of nature on the Motherhouse grounds. In September Sallie facilitated an information evening and walking the labyrinth experience for the Spirituality Center. She believes the labyrinth helps us connect to our spiritual side, and is passionate about helping others learn to use it as a path to self knowledge. To Sallie and Elizabeth, and the many volunteers who graced us with their presence over the summer months, the Sisters of Charity say a heartfelt THANK YOU for your generosity. Annette Paveglio, SC EMERGING CHURCH There is a phenomenon in our time in which Christians of various denominations are holding conversations about their beliefs and practices. These gatherings, and the insights shared by the participants, have been described as emerging Christianity, the emerging church, or the Great Emergence. As might be expected the conversations are of unequal value and critics of the phenomenon warn of dangers. Some participants are disillusioned with organized and institutional religion to the point of supporting the deconstruction of the modern Christian community. Aberrations and criticisms of the emergence phenomenon, however, ought not overshadow the good which comes when brothers and sisters in Christ share with one another the best aspects of their respective traditions and join in celebrating their commonalities in genuine ecumenical dialogue. It is appropriate that those who seek and pray for Church unity should be aware of the emergence phenomenon (by whatever name it is described) and promote those orthodox elements (e.g., our Trinitarian God, our need to evangelize, our common commitment to Christ) which by and large characterize the conversation. 3 December 2010 Page 3 SPIRITUAL AUTOBIOGRAPHY IN SPIRITUAL DIRECTION Seekers can gain great insight into the foundational assumptions and dispositions that undergird their lives by contemplatively scanning and exploring early childhood experiences to find God s hand at work there. Directors themselves can explore their own lives as a precursor to helping directees. This seminar provides meditations and guidelines for the unearthing of story and spiritual significance for director and directee alike. It incorporates journaling, prayer and sharing to help blow the dust off participants memories and see the goodness hidden there. FINDING BALANCE IN CHAOS We have three legs to stand on to keep our balance in our work life.
