1 CHARITY, UNITY, FRATERNITY & PATRIOTISM Father John Rossiter Council #9385 Holmen, Wisconsin Chartered July 13, 1986 Vol. 14 Issue 3 VITERBO CROSS COUNTRY TEAM VOLUNTEERED TO HELP WITH FUN RUN. Just fun running in the rain, getting soaking wet.. A nice drizzle keeps runners cool at 2016 KornFest FunRun! Knights and families & friends hold 2 mile race and 10K Fun Run & Walk at St. Elizabeth s Church. Find all results at: Thank you Another Fun Run Success with help! Korn Fest Fun Run was again another success. Runners & walkers enjoyed a cool light rainy morning. The cooler temps with the nice light rain made for an excellent run. Thank you to all who came through to help and probably didn t enjoy the rain as much as the runners did. This is our Council s biggest and most demanding Fund Raiser and your help was appreciated. It s nice to have an experienced team mixing in a few new rookies to help each year. Special thanks to Joe La Mere for arranging the Viterbo Cross Country team to help again this year. It s really nice to have those extra bodies to help out. Big thanks to: Greg Corcoran, Jeff Wershoffen, and Richard Cantlon for being there at 5 am to get the road set up started. Solid like a rock volunteerism awards goes to John & Joyce Popple, Terry Hubert, Joe La Mere, Jeff Reiter, Brian, Jared, Sara Clements and Mike Paoli. Of course can t say enough thanks to Janet and Judy and all the gals who do the back room work of getting all the award recitipants in right categories for the award ceremonial. Awesome help! Two special notes. Thank you to Pete Tabor. Though he was not able to participate in the actual day activities he kept our whole group informed and on a steady course for success with constant reminders of steps needed to be done. Special thanks to our Grand Knight David Hawes. Our council is fortunate to have David in control and many do not realize the volunteer time he puts into our Councils events. He was on top of everything needed for Saturday s Fun Run and then taking on all the responsibilities of the Korn Fest Breakfast early Sunday. Thank you, you re a special Brother Knight! Lastly to our sponsors and runners who make this event profitable so we can use the funds to help others. Charity Unity- Fraternalism Brother Gary Dvoracek

3 Grand Knights Report I hope everyone was able to enjoy some or all of Kornfest this year. We had another successful Fun Run-thanks to our KC members, Parish, Youth Group, and the Viterbo Cross Country Team. Numbers were down a bit due to the threat of rain and some pesky WIAA rules for high school, but still a success none the less. Thanks to Gary Dvoracek and Pete Tabor for all their hard work and efforts to make it so successful. With Pete backing off of duties due to health issues, it took 3-4 of us to fill in for him and everything he had done in the background for so many years! Thank you to all the volunteers who also helped out with our Biscuits & Gravy breakfast. We had great support from the parish and community. We served over 235 people a great tasting breakfast. Special thanks to Len Beranek and Pizza Corral for providing and cooking the sausage. And another great thanks to our Youth Group members who did an awesome job hustling around! And for Joe L for showing me how to make coffee! As has been often stated, these are very important fundraisers for our group and everyone s help and cooperation is greatly appreciated. These fundraisers help us to keep our youth programs going, help with the food pantry, church projects, promote our Catholic faith, and help those during illness or disaster. It is important not to lose sight that these events not only are bringing in money to fund our ability to provide Charity, but they also help bring us all closer as a group-unity and Fraternity. Yes, these events take a lot of work, but if you step back and take a look around it is fulfilling to see so many members talking and working together. I would like to touch on membership a bit. We re always looking at ways to bring in new members to our council. I think each and every Knight should make it a point to talk to another new face at our Parish. We have many new faces at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton which means many new opportunities to talk to them about the great things we do! There is a lot of great info for men interested in knowing what we re about in the bookcase by the entrance. Our next general meeting is on Sept. 11th at 7:00pm (no worries-the Packers play at noon). I look forward to seeing you all there to discuss new opportunities for our council. Again, thank you all for your help, generosity, and support for all that we do as a council for the Knights of Columbus. Vivat Jesus! David Hawes, Grand Knight Claustrophobic people are more productive thinking outside the box.

Also, I would like to thank Andy Olson for helping us with promoting this event with the VYSA Organization, without his help we wouldn t had as many participants. I would like to give out one final thank to Eric Wink for co-chairing this event with me! Soccer Challenge Chairman Brian Clements Did You Know According to Wikipedia, soccer is played by over 13 million people in the U.S., making it the third most played sport in the U.S., more widely played than ice hockey and American football. Q: What is a ghosts favorite soccer position? A: Ghoul keeper. 6 Our Guarantees Set Us Apart Knights of Columbus life insurance offers something precious few other financial products can guarantees. As long as you pay your premiums, the policy proceeds will be there for your beneficiaries should something happen to you. That s peace of mind, and that s what we offer with every product in our portfolio. In loving memory of George Hammes The Hammes Family We guarantee the cash value in your whole life policies will be there. We guarantee the rates on your term insurance. We guarantee our retirement products will provide a stream of income when you need it. On top of those product guarantees, I guarantee that I will offer professional, highquality service that you would expect from our organization. Our Order is among the highest rated life insurers in North America. AM Best has rated the Knights of Columbus A++, Superior for 39 consecutive years. It s a testament to our track record for excellence and security. I would suggest that a principal reason that we were able to achieve those accolades is because we remain steadfastly committed to the vision of Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney by providing life insurance by brother Knights for brother Knights. That commitment is an essential core value of the Knights of Columbus, and our core values permeate all levels of our organization. We pledge to serve our brother Knights, and their families, according to our Golden Rule: In all my professional relationships, I pledge myself to the following rule of conduct: I shall, in light of all conditions surrounding those I serve, render that service which, under the same circumstances, I would apply to myself. 8 FAITHFUL FRIAR S REPORT Sir Knights, It is hard to believe that September is upon us, where has the summer gone. Pope Francis reminds us, "Rest is so necessary for the health of our minds and bodies, and often so difficult to achieve due to the many demands placed on us. but rest is essential for our spiritual health, so that we can hear God's voice and understand what he asks of us". So as we enter into this final month of the summer, let us not forget to get so rest in the Lord.. so that we may be attentive to his voice... For the Lord is always calling... but are we listening God Bless, SK Msgr. Kachel FAITHFUL NAVIGATOR S REPORT. Dear Sir Knights: With summer coming to an end I hope all of you had a chance to experience a good time outdoors with your activities. The Old Farmer s Almanac give us a look ahead and predict bitter cold weather for January and February so enjoy what is left of this season. The installation of officers was on August 10 and we had 58 in attendance from assemblies in La Crosse, Arcadia and Tomah. A couple of dates have been set for two social gatherings, November 17 will be Widow s Night and will be held at Schmidty s, Michael Haight, the bishops master of ceremonies, will be our guest speaker. On December 10 we will meet at the Shrine for our gathering and our guest speaker will be Cardinal Burke. More in formation to follow in the next couple of months, I hope we can have a good turnout for both events. There is a very interesting video that I saw on a news broadcast a couple of months ago and have found in on line. It is called The Spark of Life at Conception. It can be found with a simple google search. I would encourage you to take a minute to view it, and read some of the stories around the video. Richard Lepsch FN DISTRICT DEPUTY S REPORT. Brother Knights; Summer is nearly over and we can now look forward to the beautiful Fall Season we have around here. It is also a time for our Councils to begin laying out Program Plans for the fraternal year, and to submit Form 365 Service Program Personnel Report. It would be nice if we could get more Councils to participate in the Youth Programs ( Soccer, Punt Pass Kick, Free Throw etc.). I had to defer Installation of Officers to September for some Councils. We had a 2nd & 3rd Degree Ceremony on Sunday, August 14 at St. Pats Church in Onalaska, and seven candidates advance to the Knighthood Degree, one from 839, one from and five from We also had three 1st Degrees in August and have 5 new members in the District. The September 17 La Crosse Diocesan Meeting in Tomah is an important one and all Councils should have representation at this meeting, specifically Grand Knights, Financial Secretary. The meeting will include training and all but one of District 25 Councils are eligible for awards. Let me know if you have any questions or did not receive the meeting notice and agenda. So I hope to see you there. Pay for peace and stay safe. Vivat Jesus! Bill Jaekel, DD#25 MONSIGNOR DELBERT J. MALIN our priest is someone s son. Your son could be someone s priest. 9 Dear Brother Knights: Summer is winding down and it is about time to head back to Saint John Vianney Seminary. This summer was great and super busy. This upcoming year will be packed like last year, only this year I have a few more responsibilities. This semester, I will be one of the sacristans for the seminary daily masses. My job is to prepare the chalices, count out hosts, prepare the vestments, help father vest, and have everything ready for mass. I will be doing this 2-3 times a week. Also, I am involved in the Knights of Columbus at St. Thomas as well. I am one of the officers: the treasurer. This will sizably increase my involvement in the KC s throughout my time here at SJV. One of the projects that we are working on is renovating the Stations of the Cross walk that is on South Campus. Being that I am into technology as well (I am triple majoring in Philosophy, Catholic Studies, and Computer Science), I am on what is called Vianney Media. Vianney Media is a group of seminarians that runs the website, keeps others up-to-date on what is happening in SJV, video tapes homilies, and takes pictures at all our big events. We are the people who allow everyone else to see what is happening. On top of all that, I am taking 4 classes this semester: Ancient Philosophy, Ethics, Latin III, and The Catechism. These are the normal classes taken by those in their second year for their first semester. This is also known as the hardest semester because the Catechism class is known as the hardest class at St. Thomas and it is taught by our Rector, Fr. Becker and my spiritual director, Fr. Borrello. Along with that, Latin III is known as Hell Latin. It is the last Latin class that I need to take; however, it is also the hardest one as well. I am also blessed to teach religious education this year. During my sophomore and junior years of high school I taught sixth graders with Laura Antony. This will be much like that. I really enjoyed teaching before and I cannot wait to do it again. Being a sacristan, on Vianney Media, the St. Thomas Knights of Columbus Treasurer, teaching religious education, and taking classes along with all the other usual seminarian formation activities, this semester will be full to the brim. I hope and pray that you all had a fantastic summer and a blessed year to come. I also ask you to pray through the intersession of Fr. Joseph Walijewski for the healing of Suzy Meeham: Holy and Good God, your servant and priest, Father Joseph Walijewski, through priestly zeal and heroic holiness, defended innocence against the sadness of evil, especially to broken families and helpless children. Imaging the Compassionate Christ, he led others to the font of sacramental life and the knowledge of Jesus Christ as their True and Only Savior. Heavenly Father, we humbly pray You to raise up Your servant, Father Joseph Walijewski, whose joyful priestly heart was resolute in the Heart of Christ Jesus, to the courts of heaven; and, through Your Holy Spirit, who guides and leads the Church, give him to us as a saint and hero of this generation. Through his example may there be a new urgency of souls for Christ. Through his intercession, I humbly ask (make your intention here) through Christ our Lord. Amen. Bishop William Patrick Callahan, OFM Conv. Diocese of La Crosse, Wis. I will keep you all in my prayers and please continue to pray for vocations. We always need more good priests!! iviva Cristo Ray! Jared Clements Seminarian Diocese of La Crosse Q: Why did the chicken get ejected from the soccer game? A: For persistent fowl play. Q: How do birds cheer for their soccer teams? A: They egg them on. Q: Which soccer player has the biggest cleats? A: The one with the biggest feet. REMEMBER PATRIOT DAY!
