We thank you for your support of Messiah s Soup & Pie Day. MINISTRY OPPORTUNITIES PRESCHOOL MINISTRY OPPORTUNITY: Greetings from Messiah s Council! Over the years, Messiah Lutheran Church has offered many ways for the church to grow and relate to our mission of being powered by grace. Living in a progressive and growing community, the need for a pre-school has come to the top of the list for the Aurora community. Because of Messiah s vision for education, we have built a facility that could most certainly help meet this need of the community. As leaders and visionaries of the congregation, we are asking for the congregation s input on whether God is calling us to provide for this need. We hope you will give the council feedback as we open the door to explore the options this opportunity brings to our congregation. We ask for prayers and guidance as we explore this opportunity for outreach that would extend beyond our walls and touch the lives of many. 10/28/ /28/2018 At Messiah, we are powered by God s Grace! God s grace comes to us as we are. through grains of wheat that comprise the bread of Christ we share and that gathers us into the one Body of Christ. through grapes that are poured out together in the Blood of Christ, as we pour ourselves out into the world. through water that fills the baptismal font, washes us clean, and embraces us as Children of God..through the Holy Spirit that lives within us as the breath of life and that inspires us to live as grace-powered throughout the world. Messiah Lutheran Church, ELCA 415 S. 18th St., Aurora, NE Senior Pastor - Rev. Sarah Ruch Pastor of Children, Youth & Family - Rev. Miles Ruch, Jr October 28, 2018

4 Order for Worship GATHERING The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God. *PROCESSIONAL HYMN A Mighty Fortress Is Our God ELW 504 Trumpeters: Garen Quandt, Wyatt James, & Kassidy Quandt Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. *PREFACE It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: *HOLY, HOLY, HOLY ELW p. 144 *CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God, who forgives all our sin, whose mercy endures forever. Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Most merciful God, we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for his sake God forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the church of *THANKSGIVING AT THE TABLE ELW p. 145 In the night in which he was betrayed, Do this for the remembrance of me. Enfold all things in your compassion, O God, and bring us into your life through the faithfulness of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. *GREETING The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. *CANTICLE OF PRAISE ELW p. 140 MEAL God feeds us with the presence of Jesus Christ. OFFERING *OFFERING PRAYER Merciful God, you open wide your hand and satisfy the need of every living thing. You have set this feast before us. Open our hands to receive it. 6 again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. AFFIRMATION OF BAPTISM ELW p. 236 You have made public profession of your faith. Do you intend to continue in the covenant God made with you in holy baptism: to live among God s faithful people, to hear the word of God and share in the Lord s supper, to proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed, to serve all people, following the example of Jesus, and to strive for justice and peace in all the earth? Each student responds: I do, and I ask God to help and guide me. People of God, do you promise to support these sisters and brothers and pray for them in their life in Christ? We do, and we ask God to help and guide us. Each student is prayed over as they are confirmed in their faith. CONGREGATIONAL BLESSING Let us rejoice with these sisters and brothers in Christ. We rejoice with you in the life of baptism. Together we will give thanks and praise to God and proclaim the good news to all the world. 10/28/ /28/
7 AFFIRMATION OF BAPTISM PRESENTATION ELW p. 234 The following students will be presented for Confirmation: Cassidy Aycock Elena Kuehner Hannah Ruch Gage Griffith Kylie Mersch Grace Ziegler Daniel Helzer Brekyn Papineau Noah Ziegler Confirmation Students will share their Confirmation Verses with the congregation. PRAYER *PROFESSION OF FAITH ELW p. 235 I ask all who are gathered here today to profess your faith in Christ Jesus, reject sin, and confess the faith of the church. Do you renounce the devil and all the forces that defy God? I renounce them. Do you renounce the powers of this world that rebel against God? I renounce them. Do you renounce the ways of sin that draw you from God? I renounce them. Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose *PRAYER OF THE DAY Eternal light, shine in our hearts. Eternal wisdom, scatter the darkness of our ignorance. Eternal compassion, have mercy on us. Turn us to seek your face, and enable us to reflect your goodness, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. CHOIR ANTHEM WORD God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song. FIRST READING Jeremiah 31:7-9 Old Testament pg Thus says the Lord: Sing aloud with gladness for Jacob, and raise shouts for the chief of the nations; proclaim, give praise, and say, Save, O Lord, your people, the remnant of Israel. 8 See, I am going to bring them from the land of the north, and gather them from the farthest parts of the earth, among them the blind and the lame, those with child and those in labor, together; a great company, they shall return here. 9 With weeping they shall come, 10/28/ /28/2018 7
8 and with consolations I will lead them back, I will let them walk by brooks of water, in a straight path in which they shall not stumble; for I have become a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my firstborn. CHILDREN S MESSAGE This is the Day! *GOSPEL ACCLAMATION ELW p. 142 Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. PSALM 126 Old Testament pg When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion, then were we like those who dream. 2 Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with shouts of joy. Then they said among the nations, The Lord has done great things for them. 3 The Lord has done great things for us, and we are glad indeed. 4 Restore our fortunes, O Lord, like the watercourses of the Negeb. 5 Those who sowed with tears will reap with songs of joy. 6 Those who go out weeping, carrying the seed, will come again with joy, shouldering their sheaves. SECOND READING Hebrews 7:23-28 New Testament Pg The former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office; 24 but he holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever. 25 Consequently he is able for all time to save those who approach God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them. 26 For it was fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, blameless, undefiled, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. 27 Unlike the other high priests, he has no need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for those of the people; this he did once for all when he offered himself. 28 For the law appoints as high priests those who are subject to weakness, but the word of the oath, which came later than the law, appoints a Son who has been made perfect forever. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. 10/28/ *GOSPEL Mark 10:46-52 New Testament Pg. 36 The holy gospel according to Mark. Glory to you, O Lord. 46 As [Jesus] and his disciples and a large crowd were leaving Jericho, Bartimaeus son of Timaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the roadside. 47 When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout out and say, Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me! 48 Many sternly ordered him to be quiet, but he cried out even more loudly, Son of David, have mercy on me! 49 Jesus stood still and said, Call him here. And they called the blind man, saying to him, Take heart; get up, he is calling you. 50 So throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus. 51 Then Jesus said to him, What do you want me to do for you? The blind man said to him, My teacher, let me see again. 52 Jesus said to him, Go; your faith has made you well. Immediately he regained his sight and followed him on the way. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. SERMON HYMN OF THE DAY The Church's One Foundation ELW /28/2018 9
