3 Dear Friends, From the desk of Fr. Sullivan Pictured below you will notice a sizable check ($20,000) from the Archbishop's Annual Appeal. It is earmarked specifically for tuition assistance for our school. Enclosed with the check was a letter from the Archbishop indicating that an additional check for $10,000 will be submitted in the spring. The Archbishop's Annual Appeal helps so many charities and has again this year raised in the vicinity of ten million dollars. Our own parish has exceeded our goal of $50,000 and has raised closed to $60,000. Therefore, essentially half of what we have raised has come back to us directly in the form of tuition assistance. As we begin a new school year, we have 193 students in the school, an increase from last year. Our tuition rate is kept lower than many schools and is now just over $4,000 per student. This rate is for registered parishioners who also participate in the spiritual life of the parish by attending mass. The 2nd and 3rd child from the same family is less. The tuition rate for a non-parishioner is $700 higher. There are a significant number of families who apply for tuition assistance and we are pleased that we are able to help as best we can. I have said all along that Catholic education is not only for those who can afford it. Catholic education in a very special way is for those who cannot afford it. Six in my own family attended St. Hedwig School in Naugatuck and we benefited from help that was provided. We would not have been able to attend otherwise. I will be forever grateful for this because the foundation for living a dedicated life of faith was laid there. A beautiful thing happened this past week. A couple of our school families have a particular need this year. Aside from the $20,000+ raised for tuition assistance from the 50 mile pilgrimage walk to Divine Mercy Shrine in April, an additional need surfaced. With the help of few generous donors, we quickly raised the amount of a full tuition. Those asked, I assume also benefited from a Catholic education when they were young and wanted to pass that along. As Bob O'Keefe, ('47) once said, "Assumption School set me up for life." Catholic education has that ability to set a person up for a successful, happy life especially when the faith aspect is lived fully. You will notice a collection coming up two weeks from now. It is the HOPES (Help Our Catholic Elementary Schools) Collection. This past week we received a $6,000 check for new technology for our school from the HOPES Fund. We have benefited greatly from the Archdiocese and I thank you in advance for any support you can give for this year's collection. We have a wonderful school and dedicated staff. I am most grateful to Mrs. Molner in particular for her leadership. When teachers and staff remain in the same school for essentially decades, it points to the top. The environment around her is one of calm and peace. People are happy working in that kind of environment. Their gifts are appreciated and fully realized.
