2 Dear People of Saint Anne, We all love the beauty, warmth and joyful spirit of Christmas with its wonderful holiday traditions. However, our Advent Scriptures this week invite us to not get so ahead of ourselves and call us to a change inside before we celebrate this great feast of beauty. The Living Word of God is calling us to take stock of our hearts this Advent season. It encourages us to move our lives around a bit, rearrange our priorities internally and be willing to make some changes from the inside-out. Our Scriptures on this Second Sunday of Advent begin with the Prophet Isaiah. Isaiah calls us to this inside-out change in order to make room for God s Messiah. He declares, Prepare the way of the Lord. In other words get ready, for the Savior is on his way. Then Isaiah tells us that when the Savior comes, things are going to get rearranged as he draws near. Every valley will be filled in the mountains will be made low the crooked things will be moved around so that they are straight and the rough country will be broad and smooth. Then, we hear from John the Baptist that the time of salvation is at hand. John tells us we must change in order to make room for him in our lives. Things cannot remain the same. We hear John call us to repentance a change from the inside-out. He challenges us to be shaken up, become uncomfortable and unsettled by the arrival of the Savior. In other words, what familiar routines and spiritual ruts do we find ourselves in during this Advent season 2017? He seems to tell us there should be some discomfort or conversion necessary for us to make room in our lives for the Savior. Have we settled for a mediocre Christianity? Have we developed patterns of sin in our lives or have our lives become cluttered with angers, old hurts or selfishness? The message of the Gospel we hear today is to repent and change in order to make true and real room for the Savior. Comfort, says Isaiah in the very first line of our First Reading, give comfort to my people, says your God. Comfort God s people, especially bring comfort to those who suffer those who are alone comfort those who are in need, who are poor or experience injustice. So, the Advent questions this week are straight-forward. Are we willing to rearrange some of the clutter and chaos of our lives in order to make room for Christ? Are we willing to be inconvenienced by the demands of the Gospel? Are we ready to accept the fact that the Savior calls to repent to make the changes necessary so that we can open the hearts of our lives to make some room for Christ and let him in where he longs to be born anew within us and among us? A few weeks ago, our parish staff had a wonderful lunch with Father Chris Ciastoń. We had the opportunity to hear about his four-month health leave from our parish. It was a wonderful time for us to gather together and reconnect with Chris as he prepares to make his re-entry into our parish community. Chris will return to full-time ministry here at Saint Anne on Friday, December 15th. Next weekend, Chris will preach at all the Masses to share his journey. I am sure that you join me in welcoming Father Chris back among us. I trust that you heard or read that Cardinal Cupich was visiting Puerto Rico this past week. The Cardinal was meeting with storm victims on behalf of Pope Francis who asked him to visit the island and extend the Holy Father s personal concern and prayers for them as they attempt the great challenge of rebuilding and recovering from the hurricane. I hope that you felt a great sense of solidarity with the Cardinal as he visited Las Hermanas Dominicas in Mayaguez, our Lenten Alms cause last year, and presented them with a $40, check from the donations we raised last year in our partnership with the Extension society. I want to take this opportunity to thank you all for your ongoing support of the Legacy of Faith Campaign. Of the roughly $7 million in pledges, we have received nearly $3.2 million in gifts! We have been providing you with periodic updates on all the projects undertaken as part of the campaign and will continue to do so in the coming months. In addition, we want to be responsive to your questions and requests for information, especially as we approach the end of the calendar year. Here are some that we have been receiving most often. If you would like to change the credit card used to make your pledge payments or your card has expired, please call with a new card number. If you would like to change the form in which you are making your payments (credit card, personal check, GiveCentral, etc.), for the Legacy of Faith Campaign, please call If your pledge was for a gift to be made annually or semiannually at the end of the calendar year, you can expect to receive instructions for fulfilling that pledge several weeks before the requested gift date. The Archdiocese of Chicago arranged for Saint Anne and the other 340+ parishes in the Archdiocese to hold their respective campaign funds in separate interest-bearing accounts managed by Northern Trust Bank. The Archdiocese has agreed to assume many of the related costs, including sending tax receipts and instructions for the fulfillment of pledges. With the large number of donors designating gift dates at the end of the calendar year, there may be a delay. If you would like to verify the terms of your pledge, make a pledge to the Legacy of Faith Campaign or have other questions, please contact Andrea Wirt, Campaign Coordinator, at or LegacyofFaith@stannebarrington.org. The Advent and Christmas seasons are filled with hopeful anticipation and joyful celebration at the birth of Jesus Christ. It is the time of the year when families and friends make a special effort to be together and share their joy and peace! It is also the most poignant when we miss our loved ones who have died. Beginning this year, the Art & Environment Committee invites the Saint Anne Catholic Community to assist in creating a tangible remembrance of family and/ or friends by helping to fund the Advent and Christmas decorations in our worship spaces. A donation of $15.00 per memorial is suggested, but remembrances will be honored at any level. The names of loved ones will be published in the bulletin at the end of December. Please complete the form below and include with payment in the collection basket or deliver to the Parish Office. 6 Worship LITURGY CORNER By Rory Cooney SONG STORIES SINGING THE FAITH: YOUR MERCY LIKE RAIN In 1991, I decided to write new versions of the two Advent seasonal Responsorial Psalms, Psalm 25 and Psalm 85. I had already written versions of both psalms, and one, my setting of Psalm 25, was published by North American Liturgy Resources. But I wanted, in this case, to bring out the Advent themes in the song, both through the text and the music. In both cases, while in the verses I stayed close to the biblical translation that people were familiar with, I expanded the refrains to bring out the aspects of the psalms that made them seasonal for Advent. In the case of the Psalm 25, it seemed to me that of all the verses in the psalm, there is a hidden refrain in verses 5 and 21: I wait for you. In a psalm that brims with hope for rescue and freedom from slavery, those verses shine out. So I brought out those emotional pleas in both the verses and refrain: All through the day, all through the night, I wait for you to remember. Save your servant, God of my heart. I wait for you. I wait for you. Remember. For Psalm 85, Your Mercy Like Rain, I started from the refrain most often used with the psalm, the one chosen for the Advent season: Lord, show us your mercy and love, and grant us your salvation. The Advent prayer in there is more obvious when we put the accent on the pronouns: Show US your mercy and love. Grant US your salvation. In other words, we know the story of what you have done in the past for our ancestors. We believe in you. Today, it s our world that s a big mess. Could you do now what you did then? So that s how I put it in the refrain of today s psalm: Let me taste your mercy like rain on my face; Here, in my life, show me your peace. Let us see with our own eyes, your day breaking bright. Come, O Morning! Come, O Light! Advent is all about the space between the promise and the reality, between the swords and the plow blades, between the slaughter and the peaceable kingdom. It s about acknowledging that things aren t finished but are definitely in process, including us. Above all, Advent is about Jesus and his message that we turn around and believe the good news, that we stop putting our eggs in the basket of influence, wealth and control, stop living as though all that matters are banks and weapons and nations and start living in the reign of God, where the law is love, where we do for others as we want done for us. All others. No exceptions. It s about believing that God is doing all of this in this world, and isn t going to do it for us, but with us. The metaphor in Psalm 85 is the metaphor of rain in the desert. In order for those desert-dwelling people of Israel to survive, water was needed to keep their crops alive. Just as God sends the rain to revive the desert and feed people, so will God make truth spring from the earth and justice look down from heaven. Salvation, the psalm says, is near indeed, and glory (i.e., the presence of God) will dwell in our land. The restoration of Israel depends on their ability to grow food, but it also depends on God s presence with them through their restoration, which they perceive as a matter of divine justice. Your Mercy Like Rain is on our 1992 CD called Vision, which I consider one of our best listening recordings start to finish. It s available on itunes and Amazon music, all the usual online places including YouTube and on CD from giamusic.com. A complete list of our CDs with links to itunes and publishers is on my website, rorycooney.com. 6 Saint Anne Church December 10, 2017 stannebarrington.org

8 Faith Formation and Education A WARM WELCOME FOR OUR NEW FAITH FORMATION COORDINATOR! Hi, everyone! My name is Breda Barry King, and I am the new Faith Formation Coordinator at Saint Anne. I was born and raised in Kilkenny City, Ireland, and moved to the United States in 1993, to do ministry in the Church. I worked and lived in Oregon State as Director of Youth Ministries and Faith Formation in the earlier days of my residency. When I moved to Algonquin, I worked in Elementary School Education, Christian Initiation and Liturgical Ministry Training, serving both the Rockford Diocese and the Archdiocese of Chicago. My daughter and I live just down the road, in Cary. We moved there in July, and enjoy the small-town atmosphere and close neighborhood connection. I love to sing and perform, especially when it comes to St. Patrick s Day celebrations, and I also write a little music. My faith life is the most important thing to me. God is so good and has filled me with such good things throughout my life. Sharing that life is the thing I love above all, in the multi-faceted ways and means God provides through learning, talking and sharing, being present and open with others and (the best of all) through the joy of singing about it. I am very happy to be here and I look forward to meeting you all and getting to know you. SOUP SUPPERS We are in need of food donations for our Soup Supper trips into the South Shore neighborhood of Chicago. High school teens and adults join the Night Ministry and other youths in reaching out to the less fortunate by serving soup and sandwiches to those who are homeless and those on the verge of homelessness. 12 Sharing the Living Story By Clem Aseron (A) Lectionary texts: (B) Bible texts (has verse #): SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT (5B) First Reading: Isaiah 40:1-5, 9-11 Responsorial Psalm 85:9-10, 11-12, Rx = Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation. Second Reading: 2 Peter 3:8-14 Gospel: Mark 1:1-8 Please refer to (A) and (B) above when I cite verses in the commentary below. In each liturgical year which extends from Advent through Christmas, from Lent through Easter and Pentecost and includes the Ordinary Sundays, the Lectionary (Book of Readings) gives us pericopes (snippets) of one of the gospel books. This year, we will hear about 62% of St. Mark s version of the Gospel. Here are some general remarks about his narrative. Literary Structure: 1 Mark s structure is a tight geographicaltheological one. The movement over the geography is from Galilee to Jerusalem. After a prologue (Chap. 1: verses 1-15), the first half of the Gospel describes Jesus activity in Galilee and beyond (1:16 to 8:21). The second half is about Jerusalem: the journey from Galilee to Jerusalem (8:22-10:52); the symbolic actions and teachings during the first part of the week of Jesus passion (11:1-13:37); ending there with the passion and death (14:1-16:8). The theological aspects highlight the authority of Jesus. Once we understand who Jesus is (see prologue at 1:1-15), Mark shows Jesus authority revealed in work and word (1:16-3:6), his rejection by his own people (3:7-6:6a) and the misunderstanding of him even by his disciples (6:6b-8:21). On the way up to Jerusalem (8:22-10:52), Mark clarifies the nature of Jesus authority and spells out the consequences for Jesus followers and of course, for his own community as well. In Jerusalem, Mark pictures Jesus meeting resistance to his teaching (11:1-13:37) and finally suffering a cruel death at the hands of those who reject his authority (14:1-16:8). Mark puts his sources the oral tradition and the earlier writings of Paul into this outline and presents his readers with the first Gospel, an orderly account of Jesus ministry, a story of the Good News, an account of God s action among people in the person of Jesus. This became a model that will be followed, adapted, expanded and developed by the other three gospel writers, St. Matthew, St. Luke and St. John. Mark is short, almost terse. It might be read in one sitting. I invite you to read it this Advent, perhaps using the outline above as a way of managing the narrative. Our Liturgy Office has several versions of the Bible and is willing to help you select one. Cultural Perspective: 2 Unlike Matthew and Luke, Mark has no story of the birth of Jesus and no genealogy yet, he manages to clearly establish Jesus status of honor as well as his authority. Verse 1. It is helpful to think of good news as a proclamation. Ancient Mediterranean people knew that proclamations were made on behalf of rulers that extolled their high status, e.g., announcing the birth of a successor or reporting their military victory or proclaiming the bestowal of honor on the people. When Mark opens his gospel by proclaiming, The beginning of the gospel [the Good News] of Jesus Christ the Son of God, his audience would immediately wonder: who is this Jesus person, and from where does Mark s authority come to make proclamations? If Jesus is simply from Nazareth of Galilee (v.9), he could scarcely lay claim to high honor (the Son of God). Recall Nathanael s incredulous query, Can anything good come out of Nazareth? (John 1:46). A village carpenter has no status, no authority to make proclamations! Mark unmistakably defines it: Jesus is the Son of God. This announces in clear terms Jesus status, the basis for his acquired honor. It is the reason Jesus can speak and act on behalf of God. Imagine the impact on the Middle Eastern ear. The Pontifical Biblical Commission 3 commends the use of cultural anthropology for what light it can shed on the characteristics of different kinds of human beings in their social context so that we can understand what was meant by the author in writing to his particular community. In Hebrew and other Semitic languages, son of so-and-so means having the qualities of so-and-so. Two examples: the phrase son of man means having the qualities of a man (person) or being human; thunder was understood to be the voice of God (Ps 29:3-9), so when Mark describes James and John as sons of thunder (3:17), they are carriers of the voice of God. A Son of God is one who has the qualities of God, i.e., one who is divine. Now think of what the impact is to the Mediterranean ear. Now, certainly, Jesus has status (honor) and authority to be a proclaimer. Mark can also claim honor and authority. He skillfully weaves quotes and images from the Hebrew Scriptures (Isaiah, Malachi, Kings, Hosea, Jeremiah) from verse 2 forward, into a picture that suits his task of proclaiming Jesus 12 Saint Anne Church December 10, 2017 stannebarrington.org

13 Sharing the Living Story as one so powerful that John the Baptist is simply his herald. This skill at the use of the sacred tradition of the people was immediately recognized and highly regarded and admired because it was likely to end the ever-present game of challenge and riposte. 4 Mark describes John the Baptist as a figure of honor. He lives and dresses like Elijah (1Kings 1:8), preaches metanoia (change or reform of one s life) and announces the coming of the Messiah. Yet the Baptizer fulfills the cultural expectation: he calls Jesus one who is more powerful than I and that he himself is not worthy even to do the task of a slave to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. (An honorable person would never usurp the honor of another!) The capper: I have baptized you in water; he will baptize you in the Holy Spirit. What does the peasant hear as John the Baptist preaches the remission (forgiveness) of debts? Compare the Lord s Prayer forgive us our trespasses (debts)... Many peasants in first century Palestine were deeply in debt. As much as 40% of the total agricultural production was owed in a variety of taxes and debts. Those unable to pay lost ownership of portions of land and were forced into sharecropping. If the weather turned against them, they would not meet deadlines, and they were forced to completely abandon the land to seek and use other skills maybe even those of artisans. What a group: displaced farm workers, tenant farmers, artisans, peasants, city workers (these last were certainly non-elites), all of whom welcome such good news as the forgiveness of debt. Next week, we will hear of this in the Isaiah reading (61:1-2, 10-11): to proclaim a year of the Lord s favor is to remit ALL debt. Every year, this Isaiah passage quoted in the gospel pericope from Luke is proclaimed at the Chrism Mass when the Bishop blesses oils to be sent to all parishes for use in anointing those to be baptized and confirmed as well as for the sick. It is a proclamation that the Lord s favor will be visited upon those people. So Advent beckons: Isaiah enjoins us: cry out at the top of your voice, Jerusalem, herald of glad tidings [for] here is your God! (v.9) Here comes with power the Lord God (v.10) Like a shepherd, he feeds his flock; in his arms, he gathers the lambs, carrying them in his bosom and leading the ewes with care (v.11); the end of the exile is upon you, you will return from being dispersed and go to your own place, hence we can sing today s psalm refrain, Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation. The second reading is emphatic: The Lord does not [wish] that any should perish but that all should come to repentance (v.9) what sort of persons ought you to be, conducting yourselves in holiness and devotion, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God we await new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells (vv.11, 12, 13): the key characteristic of the fullness of the Kingdom is righteousness when all will be ordered, all will be in balance, none will have anything at the expense of another; God s justice will be throughout. The beginning of the gospel [Good News] of Jesus Christ, the Son of God proclaims clearly to us: Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths. he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit vv.2, 8). Note that for a second Sunday, none of the readings speak about the First Coming of Jesus (his birth) but clearly speak of the Second Coming, at the end of time. Stay tuned for the third Sunday; will we finally get on with preparing for Christmas? So What? How do we prepare for the coming of our God at the End of Time? Are there debts, that is, are there IOUs or YOU OWE MEs that somehow get held over from year to year so that God s justice is denied and seems more unachievable? What might be your meditation or prayer as we live out this next week in the middle of Advent? 1 Raymond E. Brown, S.S., et.al., Eds. The New Jerome Bible Commentary, p John J. Pilch, The Cultural World of Jesus, Cycle B, p. 4 3 The Pontifical Biblical Commission, The Interpretation of the Bible in the Church, section ID2 4 A public claim to honor was always in danger of a public counter challenge; the one who could not satisfactorily pursue the ever escalating game of challenge/riposte would lose their honor status. 5 Psalm 85 whose verses are replete with what we can take to be present in fullness when The Christ comes at the End Time: Kindness and truth shall meet; justice and peace shall kiss. Truth shall spring out of the earth and justice shall look down from heaven. Saint Anne Church December 10, 2017 stannebarrington.org 13

We look forward to sharing these celebrations with those who, in some way, are part of our community. Therefore, please note the following: Visitation of the Sick: If you or a family member are in a local hospital or are homebound and would like a visit from a minister of care or a priest, call Mary Ellen Johnston at Baptism: Our Baptism ministry is pleased to help your family prepare for the special event of your child s entrance into our faith community. Two Baptism sessions are required for parents baptizing their 1st child Parents who have had a Baptism at another Catholic Church and are now wanting to baptize a child at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Parents who have already attended Baptism preparation at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism Information for setting a Baptism date will be given at the meeting or at the time of the interview. Call the parish office at Marriage: To be married at Saint Anne, the preparation process should begin 7 months to one year prior to the wedding date. Please call the parish office to secure a date as soon as possible. Membership at Saint Anne is not a requirement. We look forward to helping you during this time of preparation for the vocation of Christian marriage. First Eucharist and First Reconciliation: These sacraments are typically celebrated in second grade. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. For more information, call the Faith Formation and Education office at Confirmation: This sacrament is celebrated in high school. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. For more information, call the PATHS office at Reconciliation: Saturdays, 9:15 a.m. until all are heard or by appointment. Adult Christian Initiation: If you are looking for a place to belong or a church community to share questions and beliefs, perhaps you would like to find out more about what it means to be a Catholic Christian. Saint Anne would be delighted and honored to share the gift of faith and fellowship with you. Call Michael Beard at for information regarding the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). Registration: To enter into our faith community, please attend an information/registration session at 9:30 a.m. in the Hospitality Room, followed by the 11:00 a.m. Mass on the 1st Sunday of the month, except on holiday weekends when there are no sessions.
