1 South Dakota Retired Teachers Association Newsletter Affiliated with National Retired Teachers Association To Serve, Not to be Served SUMMER 2012, Vol. 43 No. III From the Editor Diana Glover My 8th grade teacher wrote a prophecy for me she will work as a reporter for the Denver Post. Obviously, that didn t materialize, but as editor of this newsletter, I felt like I came a little bit close to that idea. Each issue has been a labor of love, but with the fall issue, I will hand over the reins to Merry Bleeker of Pierre. Anyone who knows Merry knows that the newsletter duties are in the hands of a most capable person. Thanks, Merry, for accepting this position, and thanks, SDRTA members, for giving me the privilege these last 6 years. Pour yourself a glass of iced tea, sit back and spend some moments with your SDRTA friends as you read about membership, meet new board members and experience the May convention via print (or the internet). Get energized to write your teaching history, tell a young teacher about our $1000 scholarship opportunity and perhaps make a donation in honor of a friend. And now my prophecy - from the northwest (Northern Hills) to the southeast (Vermillion) and all units in between, will be an amazing year with exciting programs, meaningful volunteering and lots of socializing. Have fun and make my prophecy come true! Having fun at the Governor s Mansion - Leni Healy, Marrietta Catlin, Betty Beyer, Diana Glover, Merry Bleeker, & Nancy May Membership: the Essence of our Association by Diana Glover For YOU - the members, Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus organized National Retired Teachers in For YOU, there is this state association to monitor our retirement benefits, provide an annual convention, bus trips and a connection across South Dakota. For YOU, there are local programs, community involvement and personal contact with good, old friends. And now for YOU, there is this positive message from Bill Zubke, membership cochair for South Dakota Retired Teachers: All right. Everyone! Let s stretch. On your feet (or at least sit up straight in your chair!). Raise your right hand straight up over your head. REACH! Put it down. Now your left hand. Same thing! I can see you shirkers! Stretch! Now, both hands. Pull for the sky. Put em down. Now carefully, take your dominant hand and gingerly place it, palm down, over your shoulder and onto your back. Pat. Pat. Pat. Why must we do this, you ask? Because of what YOU did this year, our membership is UP for the first time in many years! And since we can t reach all of you to pat you on the back for an amazing feat, you have to do it yourselves! Some of our locals added significantly to their rosters. Whee! Some added a few members. Whee! Some stayed the same (in most cases, a plus!) Whee! Some were down slightly. (That would be our I know how hard you tried, and please keep trying group!) All in all, state membership was in the black, and that s amazing. Now, can we keep it up? Will you stretch your hand out to a recently retired colleague and ask them to join? Will you stretch your boundaries and get a former member (or MORE) to rejoin? We are a young, vibrant, exciting group of oldsters, and you know others would love to join us! It s no stretch to tell you how proud we are of your efforts and as always, how much you are loved! How exciting! How encouraging to have this membership news from Bill and his co-chair, wife Cathy! Wouldn t it be equally exciting and encouraging if at the 2013 Spring Convention we again receive news of increased membership? I believe membership recruitment is everyone s job, and remember all school personnel are invited to join...administrators, custodians, pre-school university level, private or public, those who worked out of state or those who never left the state. YOU can be the link from this association to a new member. YOU are part of the success! (Use form on pg. 7) Congratulations to the Pierre Area RTA for the biggest increase in membership! Connie Palmer and Mary Jo Johnson, Pierre Area Co-Presidents, accepted awards, including the one for increased membership, at the May convention. Unit Leaders - See membership form on page 2 All Unit Officers Are Invited to Workshops Brookings - August 9; Rapid City - August 14

We, as teachers, don t like the D s, and drought is the D word this month. Your SDRTA Board has met in Pierre, and some of us enjoyed a tour of the Governor s Mansion before the board meeting. The tour is very worthwhile, and I encourage you to try to schedule one, if you can. Kudos to Past President Pat Johnson and Past President Nancy May Executive Director Shirley Eisnach for planning a most enjoyable convention last May. It is always nice to get together to socialize and reaffirm our loyalty to the goals of our association. The issues before the board on July 18th were the convention site and theme, as well as member recruitment. The convention will be in Rapid City on May 1 and 2, We are choosing to take a chance (Mac Anderson) and hope to provide reminiscence for members. The theme will be Reminisce, Reunite, and Reconnect. Our goal will be to work on recruitment of retired teachers. With the new retirees in our midst, we must use the fourth R recruit and perhaps offer a different program for them. At the Chicago meeting last March, Diana Glover and I learned that units need to offer different formats to attract new members. Welcome new retirees to your meetings and extol the virtues of SDRT to socialize, look after economic trends and follow our SD Retirement System actions. We want your input and attendance to support our efforts for all retired teachers in SD. Don t be afraid to go out on a limb. That s where the fruit is! Your President, Nancy May Grandparents Essays Due February 1 to Marilyn Kratz (more information to come in November newsletter and on our website Reminiscent Teacher Essays Deadline - April 1. This is not a contest. All submissions by members are welcome. Teacher Scholarship Applications Due Electronically - April 10. Check the website, or contact Betty Beyer for more information on both the reminiscent essays and scholarship applications. (See Betty s phone #, etc in first column of this page). 3

4 2012 Convention Wrap-Up Rock joined Relax, Rejoice and Rejuvenate by Diana Glover In an to me in April, Lily Liu had said that South Dakota Retired Teachers Convention would rock, and rock it did as members met friends and convened in Pierre May 1-2. They were inspired by speakers, made aware of outstanding graduates of our schools, enjoyed pictures of bus trips and remembered co-teachers who have passed on. The morning tour at Bickering Brothers Distillery brought forth no bickering on our part. Young Mr. Rounds told the history and process of making whiskey, brandy and vodka as it has evolved with his dad and uncles business. There was sampling, too! Shirley Eisnach presented Lily Liu with books about South Dakota. Opening the afternoon session, Lily Liu of Washington, DC merged South Dakota and national information to tell the history of National Retired Teachers Association and AARP. In this, our 65th anniversary year, our founder, Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, shall not be forgotten. Otto Rosfeld of the SD Humanities Council sang, recited poetry and told stories of his youth in ranch country in the Nebraska Sandhills. Tish Gilmore and Valerie Rowan were no disappointment as they shared the value of reflexology and massage therapy. Just hearing about it made one relax and be curious about the vital points on our feet, hands and ears! Otto Rosfeld and Lyle Kemnitz shared a laugh following the Buzzard Stories. At dinner, Holly Hoffman, South Dakota s Survivor, shared her TV experiences from going through the screening process in California to surviving on only ¼ cup of rice a day, plus whatever native food she could find. Her enthusiasm should spur us all on to more dreams and goals, despite our golden years. Holly Hoffman excited the crowd with her stories and Nicaraguan artifacts including her Survivor torch. Following the memorial service and business meeting, AARP-SD President Dennis Eisnach instructed participants in using the fun Meridia devices in answering questions about Medicare and Social Security. Dr. Jim Hansen, a trustee of the SD Retirement System, stated that the system s assets now are 7.9 billion, compared to 8.2 billion in There are 74,000 members with 21,000 of them receiving benefits. The average benefit per month is $1490. Executive Director of SDRS Rob Wylie said he hoped to visit more units this year because the travel budget is better than in Our conservative approach has kept the system 100% funded for 22 of the past 25 years. Jim Hansen, Rob Wylie and Dennis Eisnach brought updates on retirement benefits and AARP activities. New officers were installed by Past President Al Price. Out-going president Pat Johnson, Watertown, expressed thanks to her board and all members, saying that serving as president has been an honor and pleasure. Along with accepting the challenge of presidency, Nancy May of Rapid City asked for a standing ovation for Pat and Shirley Eisnach for the wonderful convention they planned. A special thanks to Shirley for her years of service; we will miss you and are happy that you are only a phone call away. 4 Pat Johnson presented a plaque to Shirley Eisnach in gratitude for her 12 years of services as Secretary, President and Executive Director.
