MOSES PAUL LODGE #96 DOVER, NEW HAMPSHIRE Free and Accepted Masons Dover, N. H. March 2013 Organized Under Dispensation December 20, 1889 Chartered May 21, 1890
Brothers: MASTERS MESSAGE This month we completed the second degree on Brother John Pond III. He is our secretary s son and a third generation member of Moses Paul Lodge, both his Grandfather and Father belong to the lodge. This was a very special event, both for the Pond family and for the lodge. Brother Pond will be taking his third step in Masonry in April and will be eligible for the Lewis Award. Historically, operative freemasons used a Lewis device (see detail) to raise large stones to required heights and set them in place with safety and precision. It is a symbol of strength and signifies the son of a Mason. The Lewis Jewel, new to the NH Grand Lodge Jurisdiction, recognizes Master Masons who at the time of their raising had a father, grandfather, or great grandfather who is/was a Master Mason in good standing. The lodge held a successful Ladies Night event in the beginning of February. Worshipful Brother Steve Wawrzkiewicz and Brother John Pond Jr. were the head auctioneers, chefs, organizers and comedians. With the help of many volunteers, the evening was a great success and raised funds for the lodge. This is a great example of how team work, creativity and ambition will help our lodge be successful in the future. The lodge is in need of new Officer Aprons and looking for sponsors to purchase an apron as a donation. Sponsors will have their names printed on a plaque that will be posted in the lodge honoring their generosity. Please contact me for details. In March we have several events scheduled. Of particular interest is the Perfect Storm Presentation at the Square and Compass fellowship night by Worshipful Brother Kris Furtney. Kris is a former Coast Guard lieutenant commander and was involved in the 1991 rescue on which the film, The Perfect Storm was based. At the Stated Meeting our Junior Warden, Mike Stacy will give a presentation on Masonic Influence in American Society. Stay well brethren, and as always please contact me or any officer if you need a ride to lodge! Fraternally and respectfully, Attest Worshipful Vincent R. Puleo John T. Pond Jr. vpuleo@gmail.com bears123@comcast.net PH H: C

AM I A BUILDER? I watched them tearing a building down, A gang of men in a busy town. With a ho-heave-ho and a lusty yell, They swung a beam and the sides fell. I asked the foreman, "Are these men skilled And the kind you would hire, if you had to build?" And he gave me a laugh and said, "No indeed, Just common labor is all I need. I can easily wreck in a day or two What other builders have taken a year to do." And I thought to myself as I went my way, "Which of these roles have I tried to play?" Am I a builder that works with care, Measuring life by the rule and square. Am I shaping my deeds to a well made plan, Patiently doing the best I can? Or am I a wrecker who walks the town, Content with the labor of tearing down." Author Unknown Contributed by Chris Voorhis Morristown Lodge No.193 F & A M Morristown, Indiana
Secretary s Desk I want to thank everyone who came and supported our Ladies Night on Feb7th. We had a great turnout and real fun time. The blind auction brought in just under $ for the Lodge. I want to thank all businesses and Brothers who donated to this event: Rogers Restaurant, Dover NH Fridays Restaurant, Newington NH Texas Roadhouse, Newington NH Warren s Hardware Store, Rochester NH Harbor Freight, Amherst NH Brother Elie Khoury Worshipful Kris Furtney, PM Worshipful Steve Wawrzkiewicz, PM On DeMolay Do you remember when Moses Paul Lodge #96 and Strafford Lodge #29 co sponsored a DeMolay Chapter in Dover? Were you a member of Dover DeMolay? Would you like to see a return of Dover Chapter? For many of us it would be our grandsons and great grandsons who could belong. Most of our sons missed out on that experience. A whole generation has missed out, and as such a whole group of young men who might have gone on to Masonry has been lost. Learn about DeMolay on the following pages.
WHAT IS DEMOLAY DeMolay is an organization dedicated to preparing young men to lead successful, happy, and productive lives. Basing its approach on timeless principles and practical, hands-on experience, DeMolay opens doors for young men aged 12 to 21 by developing the civic awareness, personal responsibility and leadership skills so vitally needed in society today. DeMolay combines this serious mission with a fun approach that builds important bonds of friendship among members in more than 1,000 chapters worldwide. DeMolay alumni include Walt Disney, John Wayne, Walter Cronkite, football Hall-of-Famer Fran Tarkenton, legendary Nebraska football coach Tom Osborne, news anchor David Goodnow and many others. Each has spoken eloquently of the lifechanging benefit gained from their involvement in DeMolay. Did You Know: Of any 100 young men who join DeMolay, five of those 100 will become Master Councilor of their DeMolay chapters. And at least one of them will later say that he valued that experience above his college degree. Eighty or more of the 100 will go on to complete some form of post-high school education. Many of the 100 will find their vocation through other DeMolay involvement, such as Merit Bar work. DeMolay has produced a good number of men, who after serving as chaplain of their local chapters, went on to become ministers or pastors. Along those same lines, several of the 100 DeMolay will first be introduced to some form of organized religion by attending some church or temple through a chapter function. Of any 100 young men who become a DeMolay, thirty will drop out in their first year. Perhaps this may be regarded as a failure. But in later life, most of these will remember that they have been in DeMolay and speak well of the program and the lessons it teaches.
Of any 100 DeMolay, only rarely will one ever appear before a juvenile court judge or be in any trouble with the law. In fact, DeMolay produces a great many lawyers. And, although the percentages are not known, many of the 100 will join the military. Each of the 100 will learn something from DeMolay and most all will benefit from their association with the fraternity. Again, the percentages are not known, but a considerable number of the 100 will also go into the Masonic Lodge in later life. Of the 100 who join Masonry, many will serve as a head of one of the Masonic organizations. A number of the 100 come from single parent families and look to their advisors (Masons) as positive role models. One out of the 100 will be awarded the rank and honor of Chevalier, the highest honor granted to an active DeMolay. Approximately sixteen of the 100 will value their time in DeMolay so much that they will "give back" to DeMolay by serving as an adult volunteer in later life. Although only one out of every 1,000 young men in the United States, age 13 to 21, will join DeMolay, it is interesting to note that many of this nation's leaders in business, religion, and politics belonged to DeMolay in their teens. In fact, one out of every twelve State Governors is a Senior DeMolay and one out of every ten United States Senators is a Senior DeMolay. One hundred DeMolay... equals a high number of leaders. 9 Just for Fun There is this lodge located on a back street of Dover NH where the brethren are faithful masons but lack knowledge of receiving brothers from other jurisdictions. During one of the meetings, the JD informs the WM that there was an alarm at the door where upon the WM replied "Attend the alarm and report your findings ". The JD opens the door and see's to his amazement, a brother impeccably dressed with an elaborate apron and jewels about his chest. The Tyler being somewhat slow to answer for the visiting brother, the visitor states; My name is John Smith, PM of my lodge, Past District Deputy Grand Master, Past Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of NH, Past Sovereign Grand Commander of the Scottish Rite, York Rite Legion of Honor, Past Imperial Potentate of the Shrine of North America, who humbly requests an audience with the WM. The JD upon hearing these words from the visiting brother and the elaborate apron and jewels upon his chest, immediately closes the door, returns to his post and informs the WM: "Worshipful Master, The Grand Architect of the Universe is at the door"!!! More Fun Two experienced Past Masters Steve and Kris were enjoying a flight in a hot air balloon when suddenly a thick cloud formed between them and the ground. Being without instruments, after half an hour they realized that they were well and truly lost. A short time later there came across a large hole in the cloud and spied a gentleman below walking his dog across a field. They had time to exchange pleasantries and found that he too was a member of the Craft. The Past Masters in the balloon inquired of him as to their location and received the reply, "About 200 feet up in a balloon." Just then the cloud closed the hole and they were alone again. Kris turned to Steve and said, "I bet he s the Secretary of his Lodge!" "Why do you say that? Steve asked. "Well, Kris says what he has told us is absolutely true - but in our present predicament is totally useless!"
