Guy Sylvester from The Shrine of the Blessed Sacrament in Raritan. The ST. JOHN VIANNEY SOCIAL JUSTICE MINISTRY will be holding its first meeting on October 7, 2010 at 7 PM in the upstairs meeting room in the church. All are welcome to participate in the newest parish ministry. There will also be a book discussion during the meeting. The book is The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything by James Martin. 2 2010 BISHOP S ANNUAL APPEAL Christ for One Another The Diocesan Office of Respect for Life works to restore respect and legal protection of human life at every state in its existence from conception to natural death. Beyond matters relating to the unborn, persons with disabilities, and the elderly, other topics being addressed include: reproduction technologies, cloning, stem cell research, chastity, the death penalty, euthanasia, assisted suicide, and end of life issues. Your gift to the Bishop s Annual appeal will help to sustain this important ministry. St. John Vianney School News Orders for the HSA Fall Fundraiser must be returned to school by Tuesday, Oct. 5, along with one check made payable to SJV HSA. CHILDREN S ENVELOPE REMINDER Now that the new school year has begun please remember to put the family s envelope number or family name and address on the children s envelopes. This is the only way credit can properly be given. The successful Cigar Night Fundraiser will be held once again at the Colonia Country Club on Thursday, October 7 th, 2010 at 7:00 PM. There will be food, drinks, prizes and of course cigars. Everyone had a wonderful time last year. Please consider attending. Tickets are $100. This event is sponsored by the SJV School Advisory Council. Proceeds are to benefit the students of SJV school. For tickets, to make a donation or more information contact Rosanne Waltman at or Rosanne.waltman@verizon.net ALL SOULS MASS OF REMEMBRANCE There will be a Mass of Remembrance on Saturday, November 6, 2010, at 12:00 noon to remember family members of parishioners who died during the past year (November 2009 through October 2010). Immediately following the Mass a light lunch will be served in the cafeteria. We realize that many of those who died this past year were buried from other parishes. We would like to include those persons in our prayer remembrance along with those who were buried from St. John Vianney parish. If one of your family members died this past year, and you would like that person to be remembered during the Mass on November 6th, please call the Rectory ( ) no later than Friday, October 29th. We will ask you to provide the following information: name of the deceased family member; date of death; and number of persons who plan to come to the Mass and light lunch. GOLD RUSH SAT., OCTOBER 9 TH 10 AM TO 1 PM SJV CAFETERIA First grade students will be taking the Terra Nova test on Tuesday, Oct. 5, and Wednesday, Oct. 6. Please be sure your child gets plenty of rest, has breakfast before they come to school, and that they arrive at school on time. On Thursday, October 7, students in Grades K-7 will have their pictures taken. Information has been sent home with students from Photo-Life with the prices and packages that are available. Students may come to school in dress-up clothing if they are having their picture taken. Checks should be made payable to Photo-Life. No child s picture will be taken without payment. Once again this year we will be providing our students with photo I.D. cards. School will be closed on Monday, October 11, in observance of Columbus Day. All students received information last week regarding our annual Walk-a-thon. Monies collected from the Walk-a-thon will be used to upgrade our computer equipment. This year we did not receive any technology funding from the state. Therefore, we are counting on your generosity with this important fundraiser. Sponsor cards and pledges are due back by October 18. Pre-School News Our Pre-K students will have their pictures takes by our school photographer, Photo-Life, on Tuesday, October 5, and Wednesday, October 6. Information was sent home with the students last week regarding photo packages and pricing. If you wish to have your child s picture taken, you must send in the Photo-Life envelope with your payment. 3 Catechetical Program and more The Year Has Begun It is now far too late for us to accept any new registrations and this includes registrations from parents whose children previously attended the Program. Any parents seeking to register children will be told it is too late for the year and that they can return next year, provided they register on time next year. I offer them on both Mondays and Thursdays since we have students coming both evenings. The meetings are not just for parents of students in our Monday and Thursday classes, however. The meetings are also for parents of students attending our school. First Communion and Confirmation The date for First Communion is Saturday May 14, Please do not call the office or ask your child s teacher what time the Mass will be. This information will be released during the Parent Meeting for 2 nd grade parents which is scheduled for November 15 th and 18 th. No information will be released prior to the parent meetings. We do NOT have a date for Confirmation. Calling me to say you are trying to plan vacations or need to make travel arrangements for relatives to fly to New Jersey will result in the same response. I am sorry, but we do NOT yet have a date. We receive the date from the Bishop s Office. In prior years we have not been given a date until as late as January. Website As I explained during the Parent Meeting, information will not be posted on the website until after I have distributed it. So, if you are interested in getting information when it is first released, come to the meetings! If you misplace it you can find it later on the website. YOUTH MINISTRY Greetings and Blessings to all. Please remember to bring your completed permission slip for the fall retreat weekend to the youth ministry meeting this Sunday evening, October 3rd, which will take place from 7:00pm to 8:30pm in the youth ministry office. If there are any questions regarding the form or payment, parents are encouraged to drop into the youth ministry office when picking up their teens this evening. Our next meeting is Sunday October 10th and a parent meeting for all retreat attendees will follow beginning at 8:30pm and ending at or before 9:15pm. VINCENT DE PAUL Please note the two new food collection chests placed at the left and right of the entrance to our newly renovated church. The location of these beautiful collection chests are for your convenience when donating food to the pantry. Many thanks to the faithful volunteers for their assistance and time in transporting the food to the pantry in their cars. Due to the poor economy and summer vacations, the food collections have declined. The hungry are still with us. Please remember them when attending Mass and donate a little extra non-perishable food.
