2 2 Let It GROW!! By 1VDG Carleen Rajala Many of us have been listening to Let It Go from the movie Frozen until we are ready to completely let go of that song. However, thinking of all the spring events and possibilities available to Lions, I d like to change the lyrics to Let it GROW! Lions in District 17-A have had a good start on helping with the Centennial Service Challenge. So far in the fiscal year , District Lions have reported serving 211,886 people in the four service areas. Seventy three activities have been recorded in Engaging our Youth, 81 activities have been recorded in Sharing the Vision, Relieving Hunger has 54 activities recorded and Protecting Our Environment has 22 activities. However, this is not an accurate picture of our service! Only 47 clubs have recorded activities on LCI so far this year. As of March 24 th only 11 clubs have recorded activities for March. Congratulations to the secretaries of Auburn, Baldwin City, Basehor, Chapman, Gardner, Junction City Sundowners, KCK Downtown, Olathe, Robinson, Troy and KU Eye Center for staying current!! District 17-A Lions has enriched their communities with dozens of other projects. It is not too late to go back and add the service projects done by your club. With spring beginning even more will be accomplished in towns across Northeast Kansas. This is the time of year when the majority of environmental projects are done. Let s take the time to record these activities. Help grow the number of Kansans touched by Lions! In addition, the month of April is the second month to be targeted for membership growth. Through Ask 1 anyone getting a new member to join his or her club in April will receive a Membership Growth Pin. Also if that Lion invited a member in October, the pin received will be gold. The opportunities are there. Lions, it s time to Let it GROW!! District 17 - A Governors Newsletter Editor Lion Spencer Smith slsmith@cjnetworks.com 2

10 10 My daddy Jim Tubach, is a World War II Veteran who has been asked to join Honor Flight this April. If you are unfamiliar with this organization, it s a free trip to Washington D.C. to view the many new memorials honoring his service to America. One of the biggest moments during this trip is Project Mail Call, a top secret mission. The goal of this project is to provide each of our veterans letters from home during this visit. They gave us FREEDOM the least we can do is give them the recognition they deserve! Therefore, I am requesting a letter, or . I can even make it easier, as Daddy will celebrate his 89 th birthday on the second day of our 3 day trip so a birthday card will do if you have forgotten how to write a letter these days. Remember this is TOP SECRET and DUE APRIL 9 th Please mail via USPS in the following manner allowing plenty of time for delivery (or you can your letters to recorbett@cox.net which will be printed and put into an envelope) JIM TUBACH Kansas Honor Flight 2016 Belmont Place Garden City, KS Make sure the typed print is large enough for him to read - hand written letters are even better. You might include how you value his service to our country, how much you appreciated the sacrifices they made 40+ years ago or how happy you are to know he will get to see the Memorials. I would deeply appreciate your letters of support for him, as will he. Thank you, Wendy Michaels (Daughter, and travel companion for the trip April 15-17th, 2015) District 17 - A Governors Newsletter Editor Lion Spencer Smith slsmith@cjnetworks.com 10
