5 Historian Al Camacho, PM Words from the Pedestal Chairs: WORSHIPFUL MASTER Brethren, greetings from the East! It is my pleasure to announce the Initial Kickoff issue of the Camp Stone Lodge #77 Trestle Board. Camp Stone has not had a publication for quite some time and I m sure you will find it informative as well as enjoyable. We have been blessed to have Bro. Eugene M. Guzzi volunteer to take this task on. He has put much time and effort to make this successful and we owe him our gratitude. Bro. Gino is also our Junior Deacon. We anticipate to getting this publication out each month going forward. We will be sending it out by to all Brothers who have an file with us, a hard copy will be sent to those who do not have an listed. This is to help control the cost of operating the Lodge. Included are words wisdom from our other Pedestal Officers, Masonic Education, and other interesting information that you will find to be helpful in improving your knowledge of Masonry. Our November Stated Meeting is important to all members of Camp Stone Lodge #77. It is Election night, so come out and support your Lodge, and Select your next year s officers. Remember it s your lodge and its success depends on your choices. Looking forward to seeing you in Lodge, Fraternally, Emerick J. Zavatsky, WM
6 SENIOR WARDEN I hope everyone is well. We are closing in on a new year and I am looking forward to seeing continued progress in Camp Stone Lodge No. 77. We have a beautiful facility, thanks mostly to Brothers Jim Kuriger and Al Camacho. We have a meeting day that gives more masons an opportunity to attend lodge. Now we are ready to move forward. If I am elected Master for 2012, it will be 19 years after I served there first was a wonderful year for me at Camp Stone Lodge. The lodge at that time was a very exciting place. I could not wait to get to lodge, and that's the way I want us to think about Camp Stone Lodge today. My philosophy regarding Masonry has always been about personal improvement and its spiritual nature. I was recently honored to present the Staircase Lecture to a young brother at Adobe Lodge #41. That lecture speaks of the wonders of nature and of Him who created them. That is what I will emphasize next year. I want us to learn more about the meaning of Freemasonry and its teachings. We will talk about H.L. Haywood's The Great Teachings of Masonry. It will be an important text for the year. Chapter 1 of Great Teachings is entitled What it is All About. In it, Brother Haywood states, The individual who secures membership in a Masonic lodge becomes the heir to a rich tradition; that to which initiation gives him access is not something put together in a day, and it will profit him little if he makes no attempt to enter into his patrimony. He must learn something of the history of Masonry; of its achievements in the great nations; of its outstanding teachers and what they have taught; of its ideas, principles, and spirit. He must think Masonry out for himself. He must think. Come to lodge. If you have not been in a while, come back. I think you will enjoy it and we would really like to see you.
7 JUNIOR WARDEN Greetings from the South. I am grateful for the opportunity to inform you about the Bikes for Book and the essay contest for the Huachuca City School. I have a positive reception from everyone at the school so the wheels are starting to turn. We are going to do 1st thru the 6th grade on the Bikes for Books. We are also doing 3rd thru the 8th grade on the essay contest. I hope that I can get some help with the project when the time comes to grading the essays. All help will be welcome. SECRETARY

11 Masonic Friend to Friend Masonic Memorial The climax of the Battle of Gettysburg took place on July 3rd. After a quiet morning, General Lee ordered the most massive cannon attack ever on the North American continent. Then, he ordered about 12,000 men to attack the centre of the Union position, across about a mile of open country. Both sides generally showed great courage in facing each other, realizing that this might be the event that would decide the war and the fate of the country. Among the leaders of this event, known as Pickett`s Charge was Confederate Brigadier General, Lewis A. Armistead. The leader of the Union force was the Union Major General Winfield S. Hancock. Armistead and Hancock were both career soldiers, and before the Civil War they were friends when both were U.S. Army officers in California. Both were also Freemasons. When the Confederate attack reached the Union line at Gettysburg, there was fierce fighting. General Armistead was shot twice and as he went down he gave a Masonic sign asking for assistance. A fellow Mason, a Union officer named Henry H. Bingham, then a Captain, later a higher officer and Congressman, came to Armistead`s assistance and offered to help. Armistead reportedly asked to see and talk with his friend General Hancock, but was told that Hancock had been very badly wounded just a few minutes earlier. Armistead knew that he was seriously wounded and gave Bingham his Bible to keep safe. Union Brother Bingham then helped Confederate Brother Armistead off the field and to a hospital, but Armistead died two days later. General Hancock recovered and resumed his command later in the Civil War. This incident of a Freemason who was a Union officer helping a Freemason who was a wounded Confederate officer, is one of the greatest examples of the ideals of Freemasonry in action.
12 In 1993, the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania completed and dedicated a monument on the Gettysburg National Cemetery, with the co-operation and support of the United States Government that shows Bro. Hancock assisting Bro. Armistead. This statue is extremely dramatic, and is called the Masonic Friend to Friend Masonic Memorial. Our Journey for Freedom came with a price In the words of Janis Joplin in the song Piece of My Heart, Freedom is just another word for noting left to lose. It would be foolish to believe that we are a free country just because someone tells you that. We are a free country because there are always men and women willing to defend this country so you that you can say, yes, we are a free country. 16 i 536 Gen. Reg ii 537 GM Dec iii 538 GM Dec iv 539 GM Dec The Guest and Freemasonry Open letter When invited guests and visitors walk into our lodge it becomes our responsibility to ensure that they are made to feel at home. We don t know if the person is a member of a lodge or a person that is just knocking on our door. The worst thing that could happen here is they are left wandering within the lodge, feeling forgotten. Introductions and the Breakfast or Dinner If we profess that we are a brotherhood, it becomes our responsibility to demonstrate our hospitality. We should take our guests and make the introductions throughout the refreshment period so that the guests feels welcomed and we can become familiar with each other. We want to impress upon our guests that they are important to us. We should invite that guest and/or their family to join us at our table where we can talk and answer any questions he or they may have. If a guest brings their spouse, the Mason or prospective Mason s lady to join the table, as this is a good time to get to know the wife or girlfriend. Ask friendly questions that are open ended. Remember, it s our job to make guests feel comfortable. Their Names Nothing can be furthest from the truth, that first impressions are important. Miss-pronouncing or writing someone s name incorrectly is inexcusable. True, some people have difficult names to pronounce, but every effort should be made to get it right. (Imagine how you might feel if it happened to you!) Take your time, write and pronounce the name correctly. So, when it s time for the introductions in the lodge, the names will be pronounced well, the person s name correctly spelled, making it correct for the Secretary s minutes as well for the newsletter. The Examination If this is a visiting brother, then it becomes necessary for an examination prior to the meeting so that the meeting can start as scheduled. As Masons we need to exhibit with clear certainty that is extremely important and that we seriously want only Brothers and not Cowans to enter our temple. A good examination is evident by what we should postulate. Memorable Moments Every effort should be bestowed on our guests with what we can impart. For example, history and background of our lodge, our brothers, and our families, so that they have a memory of the visit, etc. Exchange information as they may want to contact you at a future date with questions or concerns. Friendship need not be a one night thing; it should be built and ongoing. Remember the Trowel!)
17 Present any literature that is available to further explain the concordant and appendant bodies there are, the charitable and community involvement associated with the lodge. The Experience What a difference an experience can make within a lodge. Word of mouth is still everything today. Like the work we do, when it s good, word travels fast. Well, the same must hold true for hospitability. Our work is all that is embodied though our portals of the Lodge. This is where we get more light, so never forget to use the tools. ### The Clue When you see someone you do not recognize, inquire.
