1 PARISH WEEKLY NEWSLETTER 14 RUARY 2016 SPIN & SECRECY REFUGEES & THE MEDIA 16 Manning Clarke Lecture Theatre Australian National University - Canberra Tuesday 16 February 2016 (6.30pm) Australia s brutal treatment of refugees and asylum seekers is notorious. To gain public support consecutive governments have engineered and militarised the language. Asylum seekers have become illegals or queue jumpers even potential terrorists. Boat turn-backs are operations protecting our Sovereign Borders. The issue frequently makes front-page news, even as the government refuses to comment about on-water matters and 1 has passed laws to silence whistleblowers. It has even pursued various media outlets for their critical coverage, referring a number of journalists to the federal police for investigation. The veil of secrecy over Australia s refugee policy makes the role of journalists, particularly those trying to report on the conditions in offshore detention centres, extremely difficult. This free public forum aims to shed light on how the culture of spin and secrecy surrounding this very politicised issue has impacted on the ability of journalists to provide accurate and impartial information. The forum is organised by the Refugee Action Committee.
2 Rod/Susan ( ) or The Anglican Church is hosting a Q&A styled forum for people interested in knowing about the challenges faced by refugees and asylum seekers as they seek to make a new life in Australia. Join us for the conversation and discover how your church can make a big difference. Tuesday 1 March 2016 from 7.30pm. Introduction to Christian Meditation We often associate Lent with 15 "giving something up", but it s also a good time to begin or to deepen the practice of meditation. The key to understanding the simplicity of Christian Meditation is within Psalm 46 Be still and know that I am God. During Lent, an opportunity is being offered at St Peter Chanel s, Yarralumla to find out more. This is held one night per week for one hour (7.15pm for 7.30pm start) beginning Monday 15 th February. Venue is the meeting room adjacent to the church, Weston Street, Yarralumla. Perhaps as a preparation for Easter, or if you have been wondering what Christian Meditation is all about, this is an opportunity in an ecumenical setting to taste and experience one of the oldest and simplest forms of Christian prayer. No cost, no RSVP required, just turn up. Enquire: PUBLIC FORUM AND BOOK LAUNCH CES (Christians for an Ethical 24 Society) Speaker: Bishop George Browning. Topic: Post Paris: Psychology of a New World Order. Chair: Paul Bongiorno. Bishop Browning s book: Sabbath and a Common Good: Prospects of a New Humanity to be launched. At Culture, 7.30 pm Wednesday 24 February. Donation: $5. Supper provided. Contact: Robyn Coghlan CHORAL MUSIC CONCERT 28 Before travelling to Poland in May to participate in the Choir Competition at Bialystok, the Australian Russian Sacred Choral Society is presenting a concert of choral music from the Russian Orthodox tradition on Sunday February 28th in All Saints Anglican Church, Ainslie. Some members of this choir gave a presentation to the RSCM annual conference held in Canberra in January, which was greatly appreciated by the conference delegates. Andrei Laptev, conductor of the Australian Russian Sacred Choral Society, is directing the concert. The proceeds of this concert will go towards the trip by the Australian Russian Sacred Choral Society to the choir competition in Bialystok, Poland in May The Choral Society is returning to the competition after winning their section in
