1 Vol 5 Issue 1 March 2014 PUBLISHED BY PROBUS ASSOCIATION OF WA FOR MEMBERS IN WESTERN AUSTRALIA Best wishes are extended to you all for lots of fun, friendship and fellowship in 2014 here is how some Clubs celebrated the festive season in Melville Ladies Probus Club On Thursday 12th December, 2013 Melville Ladies Probus had their annual Christmas lunch at the Melville Bowling Club (our meeting venue). We were served the traditional Christmas meal then entertained by a group from the icappelia singers who gave us great renditions of different songs and Christmas carols. Approximately 90 of our members attended. Some lucky people won two Christmas hampers donated by the Committee, and several bottles of wine. The photos here show our President Brenda Goodreid cutting the beautiful cake along with Patricia Goodridge who made and iced the cake. The other photo shows Janette Kingston, Roberta Mackay and Helen D'Alton enjoying a drink and a chat. Once again it was a very festive day with plenty of friendship and fellowship. Lorna Green PAWA Committee The PAWA Committee celebrated the end of a successful year with a Christmas Luncheon at the Manning Hotel. Patricia Owens 1
2 South Bunbury Probus Club Well the silly season is over and we get back to normality. I will let you know what we did at the South Bunbury Club at our Christmas meeting. After a short meeting we had Christmas morning tea prepared by Lucy and Judy, which did wonders for our sugar levels but was thoroughly enjoyed by all. For our entertainment, the Joe D Esposito songsters gave their version of lesson and carols sung by Judy, Marlene, Rita and Murray and were ably accompanied by Dulcie on the keyboard. This was followed by carols sung by all of us. At the conclusion we retired to the Hungry Hollow Tavern on the beach front for a very delightful Christmas lunch of seafood cocktail or soup followed by roast turkey and trimmings or fish, and if one had any room left, plum pudding or pavlova. This was washed down with whatever you wanted to drink. The day was thoroughly enjoyed by all. This just leaves me to wish you all the best for 2014 from all our members. Gerry Mallott Attadale Probus Club It was smiles all the way at the annual Christmas lunch for 71 members and partners of the Probus Club of Attadale in the picturesque surroundings of the Fremantle Sailing Club, organised by outings officer Leon Walkemeyer. 3 Fremantle Probus Club Woodman Point Quarantine Station On a pleasant day 13 members and partners were given an outstanding tour by Friends of Woodman Point guide Earle Seubert. The tour started with morning tea served by his wife Evelyn as Earle explained the original purpose of the station. Any person with a contagious disease and especially those with small pox and Spanish Flu (post WW I), were brought to the station. Most smallpox victims were brought directly by boat from ships in Gage Roads, whilst the flu victims came either by boat from ships, or cart, from the metropolitan area. The dedicated resident male nurses, and at times female nurses, would themselves be quarantined for many months. The first crematorium in the State was opened there in 1901 especially to dispose of the victims of smallpox as burial did not kill the disease s germs. Earle led a tour of all the buildings including the fumigation facilities and the shower rooms for all new patients. After WW II, many migrants became extremely distressed when taken to the shower rooms and asked to undress. They thought they were going into gas chambers. In contrast, to their past purpose, the beautifully restored buildings are now utilised for recreation purposes by schools and other groups. They are under the control of the Department of Sports and Recreation. Barry Prosser Booragoon Mens Probus Club In November a group of members and partners of the Men's Probus Club of Booragoon, enjoyed an incredibly interesting Woodman Point Recreation Camp Heritage Tour which centered on the historic Quarantine Station site. Underneath the "yellow jack" flown when a ship in harbour is under quarantine. our group underneath the "yellow jack" flown when a ship in harbour is under quarantine All participants voted it one of the most enjoyable and informative visit they had experienced. Not only that, but we were served a delightful lunch. Our Outings Officer, Paul, is to be congratulated for organising such a terrific tour. Peter Wesley travelled from Perth to present Geraldton with a 30yr Certificate. Margaret Sheilds Cutting the cake Treasurer Betty Clark, President Nelma Putland, Secretary Margaret Sheilds & Vice President Terry Stewart. Kalamunda Ladies Probus Club The Kalamunda Ladies Probus Club recently celebrated their 25th Silver Anniversary and in attendance were 4 Foundation Members. Darryl Williams from PAWA presented Club President Renee Wylie with a Certificate to mark the occasion. Four Club Members also received 10 year Certificates. 6 Albany Ladies Probus Club Oldest member enjoys birthday lunch. CELEBRATION: June Bailey is pictured with a photograph of the inaugural committee of the Albany Ladies Probus Club at the Club's 29th birthday lunch. After 29 years attending meetings of the Albany Ladies Probus Club June Bailey is as active as ever. She has been President three times and held numerous other official positions. Today she still helps organise outings and is ever ready with a thumbnail sketch or joke. The Albany Ladies Probus Club was formed in 1985, meeting at the Resource Centre in Serpentine Road. Only two of the original committee are still alive and June, the inaugural President, is the sole member who still regularly attends meetings and outings. "We were one of the earliest Probus clubs to be established and things were very different to today," she said. Our hubbies were retired Rotarians and the Club was started by their wives. There was lots of social interaction. We had book clubs, walks, music and more." June said meetings and outings were less formal with the President and Committee making decisions and telling the members. "We would go on trips and we might have 90 people. We had a driver and our own bus and we invited the men." June is looking forward to the Club s 30th anniversary celebration in Veana Scott Booragoon Men s Probus Club In February the Men's Probus Club of Booragoon (WA) conducted a most successful Breakfast event at The Swan Yacht Club situated, of course, on the beautiful Swan River. Over 40 members and partners enjoyed a delicious traditional cooked breakfast which was followed by a presentation by representatives of the RAC of WA Travel Department. Three delightful and enthusiastic young ladies gave an enticing and informative discourse on travel options within WA, inter-state and overseas. Details of available trips to Antarctica were particularly tempting. The photo shows those attending enjoying fellowship and their breakfast. 6 Mel Austin
7 Morley Ladies Probus Club Albury/Wodonga Rendezvous 2013 Five ladies from the Club attended the Albury Wodonga and Districts Probus Rendezvous in October 2013 and came back from the rendezvous with glowing reports of a wonderful time had by all. The Ladies made friends with Probians around Australia and thoroughly recommend going to future rendezvous. Laura Wigley Pictured are Leslie Bromell, Beryl McCulloch, Alvin Scally, Aileen Budge and Elaine Phillips Fremantle Ladies Probus Club After four days of Fun, Friendship and Fellowship the delegates at the Albury/Wodonga Rendezvous 2013 met in St. Matthews Anglican Church Albury for a Thanksgiving Service and entertainment by Choristers Dianne Robinson and Sarah Winnel and extraordinary Opera Singer Shanul Sharma. The wonderful accoustics in the Church complimented these accomplished performers. A moving end to a wonderful week. 8 City Beach Probus Club Chip Harvey and his wife Betty, celebrated their Platinum Wedding Anniversary in October Chip and Betty married on 11th October, 1943, during one of Chip's leaves from the Squadron, they were both 21 and came to Australia via News Zealand in Both Chip and Betty have had a long association with Probus. Chip joined the Men's Probus Club of Mandurah in 1991 and was voted on the Committee in He was responsible for Speakers for two years, then became Vice President in 1993 and President in He remained a member of the Mandurah Men's Probus Club until they moved to City Beach where he joined the City Beach Probus Club in He had the good fortune to visit a number of Probus Clubs in New Zealand and England. Betty joined the Ladies Probus Club of Mandurah in 1994 and arranged the speakers for two years, followed by outings and then became Vice President in 1996, and President in Betty unfortunately resigned in 2001 for health reasons. Horst Hamp Cottesloe Ladies Probus Club - keeping abreast of today s world. 36 ladies, average age about 75, attended ipad lessons which is about half the club s total membership. There were another 8 or 9 ladies that would have liked to have participated also, but unfortunately for them the days didn t suit. This great idea came from Newsletter Editor, Pamela Smart, who had herself attended a similar course, and thought it might interest a few of our ladies. With so much interest, Pamela set about putting her idea into practise, and with the support of The Grove Precinct, arranged for 4 x 2 hour lessons during January with tutor Kris Vargas. The course was a huge success, not only because most of the participants had basic or no knowledge of how to make the most of their ipads, it also proved to be a wonderful social occasion. 9 Scarborough Beach Combined Probus Club Former Eagles footballer David Wirrpanda was guest speaker at Scarborough Beach Combined Probus Club in November which attracted a big audience of members and guests, including VIPs from Scarborough Rotary Club. David spoke of his family roots in North East Arnhem land. His family, strongly rooted in Aboriginal affairs and in sport, moved continually before settling in Victoria and he had little structured schooling. His football career began when Chris Connelly asked him to participate in schoolboy football and then at the age of 16, he found himself on the way to Perth to join West Coast Eagles. It was the beginning of a great career. His 227 AFL games include a Premiership and a runnersup medal, an All Australian selection, an International Series selection, and becoming a WCE Life Member. He took advantage of football as a vehicle for education. The Eagles Football Club was his classroom, its people his teachers. During the following 10 years his focus was on playing well and setting goals for himself. The David Wirrpanda Foundation was established in 2004 with the aim of improving the lives of young indigenous Australians. The Foundation has grown to mentor 600 girls a year and has 57 staff and volunteers with branches in Western Australia, Victoria and News South Wales. In the initial stages, gold coin donations raised $170,000. The Foundation now has corporate sponsors and is 35% Government funded. The Foundation welcomes donations. Visit The Bath Tub Test During a visit to my doctor, I asked him, "How do you determine whether or not an older person should be put in a care home?" "Well, "he said, "we fill up a bathtub, then we offer a Teaspoon, a Teacup and a Bucket to the person and ask them to empty the bathtub." David Wirrpanda with Program Director, Paul Druitt Len Horne 9 "Oh, I understand, "I said. "A normal person would use the bucket because it's bigger than the spoon or the teacup." "No" he said. "A normal person would pull the plug. Do you prefer a bed near the window?"
