1 The Word And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth John 1:14 Receive the Gift of All Gifts! December 2011 A multitude of angels assembled in Bethlehem to behold the unapproachable nativity; and seeing their creator lying in the manger as a babe, they were filled with awe. ~ from the Akathist Hymn to the Nativity of Christ The presence of our Lord Jesus Christ, even in infancy, instigated an assembly of angels to behold the nativity, which the above hymn presents as unapproachable. Simply to be in the presence of our Savior was enough to motivate the gathering of heavenly beings and fill them with awe! The Nativity of our Lord continues to motivate faithful individuals to gather in various capacities: liturgically, with family, in social environments, etc. In the scope of each of these gatherings we are given the opportunity to experience God through loving fellowship, yet it is through the liturgical experience of receiving the most Holy Eucharist that we are holistically edified through the experience of the authentic relationship with our Savior. Through the responsible reception of Holy Communion, we experience an even greater sense of awe than the angels did as they assembled at His manger as through the Holy Sacrament we are extended an invitation to not only approach He who is unapproachable, but also experience the Nativity through an intimate union with Christ Himself. The angels yearn for the experience that we are offered continually through the Church to come into intimate union with God! This eternal and epic gift has been presented to God s children for no reason other that the reality that He loves us. At the Feast of the Nativity, and at every, we have the opportunity to receive God s love, and allow it to heal every brokenness that we expose to Him as the Physician of our souls and bodies. Responsibly approaching the Nativity of our Lord is an awesome experience that graciously propels us toward an acquisition of virtues. The recognition that we need the gift offered to us by God develops authentic humility through cognizant understanding of our relationship with Him. This experience in turn fuels a consistently renewed commitment to our Christian journey. Your celebration of the Lord s birth will be filled with peace, love, and joy when you approach as a child of God who eagerly anticipates the one true gift that is needed by your soul the experience of Jesus Christ! The Nativity of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is the blessed feast day of our beautiful community. Please make it a chosen priority to initiate the celebration of the birth of our Lord at the with your parish family. May we approach the Nativity feast with the same anticipation and awe as the angels, who will be present in the when we celebrate on December 25th! Christ is Born! Glorify Him! Fr. Luke Feastday of St. Nicholas December 6 Plan to attend Vigil at 7:00 p.m. on Monday evening, December 5 at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church in San Anselmo at 102 Ross Avenue.

4 Parish Activities & Ministries Philoptochos Coffee Hour Last month when thanking the ladies for baking emergency cookies for coffee hour, it was said that Stassie Sideris donated the ingredients. It was actually Sophia Stathis. Thank you, Sophia! We are in need of hosts for coffee hour on December 25, January 8, 22 and 29. Please sign up in the hall. If you are unable to host a coffee hour, please consider dropping something off in the kitchen. In the past few weeks we have received a few donations of baked goods, which we appreciate very much. Harvest Luncheon Our annual Harvest Luncheon fundraiser was held on November 6th. This was the first year we had the turkeys brought to the church uncooked. Amalia Haginicols and Sophia Stathis were gracious enough to cook ALL the turkeys and, as usual, they did a fantastic job. The luncheon was delicious, and we were able to raise $1700 to be used for our chapter s philanthropic endeavors. The leftovers were taken to the Hamilton shelter, and they were extremely grateful for the donation. They had just learned that there would be 40 extra people for dinner that day and were frantic to figure out where the food would come from. They said it was truly a miracle! BAPSAEF Luncheon The annual Holiday Luncheon will be held on Saturday, December 10th at the Cathedral of the Ascension Church in Oakland. This year we have set up a carpool system to assist anyone needing a ride. If you are coming from the Petaluma area, please contact Rose Hunter. In Novato, Floretta Burrows and Cathy Selmi will be your contacts. From Southern Marin, please contact Debbie Kokalis. purchased, and the tree is decorated and ready to go. Since this expense is not in our budget, we are asking Philoptochos members to consider making a $10- $15 donation to help with the cost of the completed tree. Please make your check out to Susan Stockton, or drop it by the Philoptochos box in the church office. Your help is greatly appreciated. This is always a lovely luncheon and we hope to see you there. When you send in your reservation, please make a notation that you are from the Nativity of Christ Church so we can all be seated together. Adopt-A-Student During the Metropolis fall conference at St. Nicholas Ranch, one of the items on the agenda was the Metropolis Adopt- A-Student program. This program is for men and women from our San Francisco Metropolis attending Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology and Hellenic College. All chapters were asked to adopt a student for the school year. Our chapter has adopted Kevin (Nektarios) Edgecomb. He is a returning student who gave up a profession in Information Technology in order to follow a calling from God to the priesthood. Most recently he had been working at the Space Sciences Laboratory at UC Berkeley. For the last two years he has been affiliated with Ascension Cathedral in Oakland and also the OCF in Berkeley at the Patriarch Athenagoras Institute. The second student we adopted is Reader Andreas MacLean. He is a senior at Holy Cross studying for the Master of Divinity degree. For fifteen years prior to going to Holy Cross, he worked in the field of corporate finance. He has served the Metropolis of San Francisco as joint-chairman of the Stewardship & Finance Committee since He is married and has two small children, Alexandra, 5, and Yannis, 3. His home parish is Saint Katherine in Redondo Beach. Throughout the year we will be sending cards, sharing s and sending goodies. An will be sent out to our community prior to the mailing of packages so anyone interested can also participate. If you would like more information about these seminarians or for their addresses, please contact Debbie Kokalis. Visitation Susan Stockton, George Tacticos and Diane Kavantjas are making tremendous progress developing our new visitation program. (see page 11). They are very excited to get started so they can continue the connection these seniors have had with our community. They are reaching out beyond Philoptochos and into our community. If you would like to become involved, please contact Susan, George or Diane. May our gracious Lord grant rest to their souls and consolation to their families. May their memory be eternal. THE SACRAMENT OF PENANCE - CONFESSION In preparation for the celebration of our Lord s Birth, please take advantage of the additional times and days set aside for Confession, or call for an appointment. A sincere and heartfelt confession can lead one to a deeper sense of peace in the knowledge of God s forgiveness and abiding presence, all of which remain always key ingredients and essential elements in our participation in Holy Communion. How can one prepare for Holy Confession? One must, of course, first acknowledge and accept the fact that, as human beings we sin, and that, in fact, all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God... (Rom.3:23). Preparation for Holy Confession is a prayerful examination of feelings, thoughts, words, acts, attitudes, habits, values, priorities, goals, direction and way of life. The goal of this sincere search of conscience, by the grace of the Holy Spirit, is not to condemn ourselves, but to affirm our true self in Christ, Who has given us access to God s mercy and forgiveness, and Who has taught us to live for God s glory. Pray and think about your confession over several days. Ask God to help you perceive your sins and make a thorough confession of them. A pamphlet entitled The Sacraments of Confession and Holy Communion, A Guide for Preparation and Participation, is available in the Narthex. Confessions during the Advent Fast will be scheduled by appointment. Please call the office or Father Luke directly to schedule a time for Confession. KEEP THEM IN YOUR PRAYERS Please use this list to pray for members of our parish and others who are sick or in need of God s care. Alexandra Edrich John Gigounas Evelyn Lendaris Fr.
