3 April 19, 2015 FOR THE IMPERFECT I came across another one of those great ads on the radio. It has a parent making a silly mistake in cooking or fixing the car or something else. At the conclusion it makes the point that kids without parents don t need perfect ones they need loving ones. Kids who have no moms and dads would love to have real parents even though those parents are imperfect. In other words the parents are like you and me far from perfect, but at least trying. Today we say: a work in progress. On the Chrism Mass at St. Agnes on Holy Thursday, Bishop Murphy gave a great homily on the priesthood. There was a part that particularly struck me. After urging the People of God to pray for priestly vocations, he told the people to realize that their priests are human beings. Yes, they are representatives of Christ, but they are men who get tired, have a bad day, can be cranky or impatient and even forget things. (I added that.) Some people imagine that priests are so very different from all other human beings and judge them by a standard that even a canonized saint would find difficult. Even the saints had their problems. St. Jerome was a bit grouchy at times. St. Alphonsus Liguori was terribly scrupulous even though he was a great moral theologian. Many others had their foibles and quirks. If it is that way with saints and holy people, it is not at all surprising that all of us have our limitations. Yes, we are trying to be perfect as Christ asked us to be. At times, however, we all fall short of the mark. That s why you argued with your wife or husband or got annoyed with your kids over nothing. That is why everything is not perfect in this parish: you have an imperfect pastor who is not the most organized guy in the world. (I hate it when I misplace a piece of paper or note and have to waste time locating it!) But the truth is we all have our weak points and part of being a good Christian is learning to live with ourselves and others. My godmother, Lauretta Delaney, was a tremendous influence on me. Even though she knew children were imperfect, she let me and my brothers and sister think we were the greatest people on earth. Many times she would tell us about a principal of hers and she could not mention his name without telling us that he was a perfectionist. He was also a great principal. She understood that aiming for perfection and reaching the goal are two different things.

4 Christ urges us to work for perfection, but he understands that we will fall short. Now if just you and I could understand that and give each other a break, we d all be much happier. In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. McDonald The disciples in today s Gospel came to know Jesus in the breaking of the bread. When we share what we have with those who are in need, we, too, will discover Jesus in our midst. 6 CATHOLICS FOR FREEDOM OF RELIGION "We ask peace and freedom for the many men and women subject to old and new forms of enslavement on the part of criminal individuals and groups." Pope Francis' Easter message, 2015 Christian Students Killed & Kidnapped: Kenyan university students, mostly Christian, were massacred on April 2, "The attackers asked people whether they were Christian or Muslim, then I heard gunshots and screams", said student Susan Kitoko, as Christian students were killed by Somali militant group al-shabaab. "The mistake they made was to say 'Jesus, please save us', because that is when they were immediately shot," said student Reuben Mwavita, when he saw female students begging for mercy. A total of 147 students were slain. 80% of Kenya's population is Christian. ( guardian.com, 4/4/15) Nigerian girls, mainly Christian, were kidnapped while taking exams at boarding school in April, "The over 200 Chibok girls have converted to Islam, which they confess is the best religion. Either their parents accept this and convert too or they can die," said a Boko Haram leader. Boko Haram means "Western education is forbidden." A report by Human Rights Watch reported these 200+ girls were among over 500 Christian girls and women who have been abducted since They are forced to marry, convert, are repeatedly raped and become slaves. ( 10/27/14; huffingtonpost.com, 11/1/14) "May the international community not stand by before the immense humanitarian tragedy unfolding in these countries and the drama of numerous refugees." Pope Francis' Easter message, 2015 "Brethren, we came to this country (America) to practice our religious liberties, and if we don't get involved, we're going to lose them." Rev. 7 2015 Catholic Ministries Appeal Serving God by Serving Others Christ teaches us always to look upon others with mercy and tenderness, especially those who suffer or are in need of our help. -Pope Francis A Place to Call Home Charles spent 17 years deployed at military bases throughout the world. Returning home after an incident involving nerve gas, he began struggling with debilitating bouts of anxiety and depression. His circumstances worsened and he couldn t maintain a steady job. Charles moved in with his mother, but within a year she died and his childhood home went into foreclosure. Catholic Charities Project Veterans Independence, which guides homeless veterans into permanent housing so they can live independently and have access to support networks that get them back on their feet, reached out and helped Charles. I was out of the service, out of a family, out of a job and out of a home. Catholic Charities found me and helped me to not only find a place to live - but they helped me to turn my life around. - Charles, honorably discharged US Veteran Please consider donating to the Appeal and making a difference in someone s life. 9 LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA We are still in the midst of the Easter Season and the reading at Mass from the Acts of the Apostles brings us so much insight into what those simple men, fishermen as Peter calls himself, went through. From being full of fears, as to speak full of courage, proclaiming Jesus Christ, even after the authority would forbid them speaking in Jesus s name. Even after they were sent to prison, they kept proclaiming the Gospel, the Good News of Jesus Christ! Of course what comes to mind is Boldness and the notion that only the Holy Spirit can give us the strength to change our ways and change from an indifferent attitude to one of courage and boldness to testify our faith, to make the decision to proclaim Jesus! The Holy spirit gave the grace to those uneducated, common men to do such that and soon the Church will prepare us to receive the Holy Spirit. In Pentecost we celebrate the miracle, and we can pray to be transformed into a people of courage and boldness. Today it is important to speak about God, to emphasize the uniqueness of the God we believe in, to embrace God s challenge to Go and repair my house which is failing into ruins. Today there is a greater demand for spiritual life than in the past; we should be willing to offer the message of the Gospel in the marketplace and among all those that pretend to know our Lord with false conceptions of faith and church. The Gospel is a seed that must be sown deeply in good soil. Pope Francis proclaimed the Year of Mercy to begin December 8th. The Pope said why he called for a Holy Year was because it is the favorable time to heal wounds, to help, to forgive. Mercy is what makes God perfect and all powerful. If God limited Himself to only justice He would not be the loving Father who created us in His love. The Pope urged all Catholics to spend more time practicing the corporal and spiritual works of mercy, to build the bridge that connects God and man, opening our hearts to all. We have so many CDs with new titles now in the church kiosks. Try to listen to some of them like: Being All In a college football player recounts how he disposed of all of his belongings to give himself fully to the Lord and live out the message of Divine Mercy. Living the Gospel with the heart of Pope Francis is about the Pope s invitation to all to be missionary disciples. Message accessible and actionable for people living in this day and age. Faith at Work and the Holy Moment by Matthew Kelly, who answers questions relevant at our everyday life, Do we struggle with living our faith at work? Is holiness possible? and more. Be a good Samaritan and give away some of these CDs to people who are away from the Church, and the Holy Spirit will open their hearts to receive the message. Thank you for all you can do! God Bless you! Toti Conforti JUNIOR CATHOLIC DAUGHTERS COLLECTION FOR BIRTHRIGHT, MOMMAS HOUSE AND LIFE CENTER OF LONG ISLAND April 19th from 9:00 AM-12:00 noon in Finamore Parish Center.
