1 THE EPISTLE St. Philip s Episcopal Church 342 East Wood Street Palatine, Illinois (847) March 2016 A Letter from Senior Warden, Bob Purcell Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, On the first Tuesday of each month, after the morning Eucharist, a Bible study group discusses the Old Testament book of Isaiah. In the early chapters Israel is threatened by a military invasion from Syria, but Isaiah warns the people of a greater threat from the sinfulness and rebellions of the people of Israel. He warns of the consequences they bring on themselves. Isaiah tells the people cease to do evil, learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; defend the fatherless, plead for the widow. The Tuesday morning group noted the more things change, the more they stay the same. During the month of March, we will move from Lent into Holy week. We encourage one-another to participate in Lent and then Holy week as you are able. This includes our March 5th Quiet Morning, Palm Sunday, Maundy 1
2 Thursday, Good Friday and then Easter. This may be a good time to focus on who we want to be and a little less on what we need to do. Father Jimmy Swarthout will be with us for the Quiet morning and throughout Holy week. Father Jim Stanley will be our supply Priest and on-call Priest in the Month of April. Your Vestry will meet this Saturday, February 20th for the purpose of reflecting and planning. Please do not hesitate to share your thoughts and comments with your vestry. On a personal note, I had the opportunity to spend time with my brother and two sisters. Penny is sixteen months older than I. Jim is sixteen years younger. Deb is in the middle. This means my parents were reasonably prodigious. I am blessed. Blessed with a supportive community at St. Philips and blessed with family. A wife of almost fifty-two years, children, grandchildren, a brother and sisters. Grace and Peace to you, Bob Purcell, one of your wardens Mission Statement SEEK a deeper knowledge of Jesus Christ SHARE the love and compassion of Christ SERVE others with open hearts SHINE with Christ s light, illuminating our world 2

7 Winter Concert by Grace Horner The Palatine Concert Band will give it's Winter Concert on Sunday, March 13, 2016 at 3:30 PM at Cutting Hall, 150 E. Wood Street in Palatine. Tickets are $8, senior & students $5. Advance tickets are available at the Cutting Hall Box Office or call or online at The program will largely feature French & American folk or folk like tunes including: Scenes from "The Louvre" by Norman Dello Joio (this is a classic band piece and takes you on a tour of The Louvre with the use of many French Folk Tunes);. Bayou Breakdown by Brant Karrick is a contemporary piece with the flavor of Creole music; Symphonic Songs for Band by American composer Robert Russell Bennett (the suite still has a folk tune feel with its three movements of a Serenade, Spiritual & Celebration); Foster on My Mind includes many Stephen Foster tunes in new settings by Takashi Hoshide; Little Fugue by J. S. Bach is based on his Little Fugue in G Minor arranged by Ronald Romm & Calvin Custer and is quite familiar; Inglesina or The Little English Girl by Davide Delle Cese arranged by John R. Bourgeois (This is a march with a Latin feel); Turkey in the Straw for Concert Band by Michael Markowski (it plays around with the American folk in a remarkable number of ways). For more information on the band see (By the way our Spring Concert is on Sunday, May 1, also at Cutting Hall. It will have a Latin Music theme and will include a new work commissioned by the band). 7
