Fitch III ssociate in Ministry: Marcia Dorn Church Council, President: ick Kolkman Custodians: Dorothy chmidt Wes hompson Financial ecretary: ae Gullion Music Director: Gail Jensen ffice Manager: lene Beck Front ffice: my Lynch Dr. Charles tanley tells the story: ne of my more memorable seminary professors had a practical way of illustrating to his students the concept of grace. t the end of his evangelism course he would distribute the exam with the caution to read it all the way through before beginning to answer it. his caution was written on the exam as well. s we read the test, it became unquestionably clear to each of us that we had not studied nearly enough. he further we read, the worse it became. bout halfway through, audible groans could be heard throughout the lecture hall. n the last page, however, was a note that read, "You have a choice. You can either complete the exam as given or sign your name at the bottom and in so doing receive an for this assignment." Wow? We sat there stunned. "Was he serious? Just sign it and get an?" lowly, the point dawned on us, and one by one we turned in our tests and silently filed out of the room. When I talked with the professor about it afterward, he shared some of the reactions he had received through the years. ome students began to take the exam without reading it all the way through, and they would sweat it out for the entire two hours of class time before reaching the last page. thers read the first two pages, became angry, turned the test in blank, and stormed out of the room without signing it. hey never realized what was available, and as a result, they lost out totally. ne fellow, however, read the entire test, including the note at the end, but decided to take the exam anyway. He did not want any gifts; he wanted to earn his grade. nd he did. He made a C+, but he could easily have had an. his story illustrates many people s reaction to God s solution to sin. ome people look at God s standard--moral and ethical perfection-- and throw their hands up in surrender. Why even try? they tell themselves. I could never live up to all that stuff. thers are like the student who read the test through and was aware of the professor s offer but took the test anyway. nwilling to simply receive God s gift of forgiveness, they set about to rack up enough points with God to earn it. But God s grace truly is like the professor s offer. It may seem unbelievable, but if we accept it, then, like the stunned students who accepted the professor s offer, we, too, will discover that, Yes, God s grace truly is free. ll we have to do is accept it. hank you to all the members who voted for the summer unday worship service. What shall I render to the Lord for all his benefits to me? o asks the Psalmist (116:12) and so we occasionally sing as an ffertory. n Pentecost unday, nine of our children will offer themselves to God and affirm the vows made for them at their baptism through the ite of Confirmation. hese young men and women have applied themselves to a study of the Creeds, the en Commandments, the Lord s Prayer and the catechism. hey are prepared to offer themselves as confirmed members of the people of God active here in our congregation. hey are prepared to do this as a result of the prompting of the Holy pirit. hey are prepared because they chose to be here, because they want to be here, because someone brought them here, because someone made them come here, because somewhere, somehow through their parents or grandparents or their friends or simply by the prodding of the Holy pirit, they want to associate themselves with the mission and ministry in this place. hey are here because they want to be closer to God, closer to one another, and closer to you. How can we not thank God for them? How can we not pray for them? Like father, like child s we celebrate Father s Day, we likely see traits in our dads (or other father figures) that we hope to be known for ourselves: integrity, gentleness, a great sense of humor, a love of learning, a humble spirit. my Grant s song Father s yes tells of a young girl who wants nothing more than for others to recognize her father and her heavenly Father in her. When people look inside my life, I want to hear them say, he's got her father's eyes. What characteristics of God your Father are reflected in your eyes, heart and life? nd what godly qualities would you like to cultivate? May others see our heavenly Father in us! P G 3 W H H Y H P
