1 Volume 14, Number 1 www. alpost142.com legion@alpost142.com January, 2012 I hope everyone had a great Christmas and holiday season and is looking forward to this New Year with a sense of hope. I know that this past year with its ups and downs have made it a huge rollercoaster ride for some and I am looking forward to a better year for As usual our Auxiliary made sure that the lounge, main hall and dining room were decorated for the holidays and saw to it that the children from our community had a great time at the Children s Christmas Party. A job well done. I also want to thank all the people that brought toys in for the Toys for Tots drive. We have a lot to do this year and as always we look for volunteers to help in our many activities and projects, so please don t be shy and ask any officer what you can be involved in. Also if you have any ideas for fundraisers such as Boys State please let us know and once again, get involved. As a Post we need everyone to attend our General monthly meetings. Remember, this is where you can give your input as to what you would like to see happen here. Thanks to the members that came out to Wreathes Across America at the Veterans Cemetery in Lake Worth. It is a shame that each year that I go there are more and more grave markers. It seems that we just can t keep up with the amount of wreathes that are needed. Although collectively we were able to get 1600 wreathes, there are now 10,000 grave sites at the cemetery. Let us not forget our veterans. The new door cards are out and you will need to show your 2010 membership card to get one. As of January 31 you will become delinquent. Just as last year we are asking for a $1 donation to help offset the cost of the new lock and cards. This 1st Vice Commander s Report Legionnaires, we are now half way through our fiscal year and everyone should have sent in their 2012 dues. Once again, if it is sitting on your kitchen table, please mail in your dues, drop them by the Post or for those that use the internet you can now renew online at the address on your renewal notice. Department has set a goal for all Posts to be at 75% of membership by December. We have made that number and are at 77.8%. This number has not changed since last month and that means that we will miss our next goal. Please get donation is not mandatory. This year we will be replacing our main fundraiser, the Annual Car Draw with a High Seas Cruise Drawing. In today s economy it has been more and more difficult to sell these fundraising chances for the Car Draw at 25 per ticket so we will have chances for a cruise for 10 per ticket and you will have a chance to win up to five times on a single ticket. So don t forget to purchase your Cruise Draw tickets, this is our largest fundraiser of the year and will be held on April 1st. To get things going this year, please join us here in the lounge for all the football playoff action leading up to our Super Bowl Party weekend February 5th. The Commanders Christmas party was a lot of fun and the money raised by our volunteer bartenders will be going to the American Legion Children and Youth fund. Great job guys. As most of you know, Home Depot came out to paint the building but as luck would have it, it rained that day. They are now in the process of getting the volunteers scheduled to come out and try again. Thank you to all that came to the Commanders Christmas party. Everyone had a good time. Thanks also go out to all the people that brought in the food for the holiday baskets that were given out to our needy veterans and families in our community. We will be having our 4th Annual Mash Bash on January 14th and the cost for the Bash will be $10 per person but you will be fed some of the finest food the mess can come up with and beer will flow. Fliers are around the post and you can ask post officers for any additional information. We will also need volunteers to help set up the hall for the party, please contact Danny Hartnet if you want to help. Please welcome our new members Joseph McNamar, John Tyrrell, Peter Thomas, Thomas O Grady, William Stimpson, John Gannon, Douglas Totura, Harold Lapato, Joseph Pearl, Sherwin Hoopengardner, Charles Lauch, Sylvester Granderson, Theodore Furland and Newton Kirk. Welcome aboard. those renewals in because this month you will be considered in default. Remember in order for our voices to be heard on Capitol Hill we must keep those membership numbers up there. If you know a veteran that is not a member of one of the greatest organizations working for veteran s rights, bring them by and get them involved. 7 Volume 14, Number 1 January 2012 Page 7 Auxiliary President s Message The holidays are now behind us and it s now time to get back to the work of our Unit. The Children s Christmas party was a great success, with Santa arriving on the fire truck and our puppet show. Another good time was had at the Commander s Christmas party, with loads of fun by all. We served many dinners on Christmas day at the Post. The run with our Legion Riders down to Sandy Nininger to give Christmas gifts to our female veterans there was also inspiring. We participated with the wreath laying at the National Cemetery at Lake Worth, with not a dry eye in the crowd. Our general meeting in January will be Initiation, as well as a vote to amend our Constitution & By-Laws to reflect the increase in our per capita to Department. The new wording in our By- Laws is as follows: Article III - Dues - Section 1: The annual membership dues of this Unit shall be $30.00 for Senior and $3.00 for Juniors, which shall include the Department and National per capita. The dues for the Junior shall be paid by the Unit. Department President Diane shall be in our District on January 26 &27. There will be a dinner at Post 180 to honor her, with all invited to attend. Please see me for the details, as we must have a count to our District President by the 20th, and there is also a small charge to defray the cost of the meal. On January 14th is our annual Mash Bash, so get out and dress as your favorite Mash person. This is always a fun event. All my best wishes to the Unit for a successful For God & Country, Demetria C. Grieve A Message from the 2nd Vice President It s a new year and I would like to thank everyone for all the help they have given myself and the Auxiliary with the donations of baked goods, the Toys for Tots drive and for the canned and boxed foods that we give out to veteran s and their families that are in need at Thanksgiving and at Christmas. I also want to thank everyone that donated money for our different projects. The children s Christmas party was a great success and thanks go out to all that helped make this wonderful day for the children. Special thanks for the antique fire truck that delivered our Santa right on time. And lets not forget to say thanks to Jolly Santa and his elves for all the gifts. We still have many more functions ahead for 2012 starting with the Mash Bash on January 14th. Without everyone s help we would not be able to have the funds that we need for our different veteran s and children s projects. Thank you to everyone again for all that you do.
