2 DID YOU KNOW? By Rabbi Beller HOW MUCH TO GIVE MINIMUM. The minimum annual contribution to tzedakah is an amount under $2. However, that is unacceptably low for a person who himself eats decent food and wears decent clothes. If one gives the minimal amount or above, he or she fulfills the mitzvah of tzedakah, but not necessarily as it should be done. The minimum annual contribution to fulfill the mitzvah of tzedakah is one-third shekel- about $1! That amount would be appropriate for someone who has no income or is so poor he himself is supported by tzedakah and is living at a subsistence level. A person who eats bread, meat and cooked foods and dresses nicely should certainly give a tenth or a fifth of his or her income GOOD. It is acceptable for a person of adequate means to give 10%. of one's income including any accretion in wealth as well as a onetime contribution of a tenth of one's net assets BETTER. The choice performance of the mitzvah of tzedakah is to give 20% of one's income including any accretion in wealth plus a onetime contribution of one-fifth of the value of net assets. The rabbis limited tzedakah to giving no more than a fifth of income for fear that being overly profligate in giving tzedakah may cause a person eventually to come to need There are, however, exceptions to the one-fifth upper limit. One may give more than a fifth in the following circumstances: To ransom a captive To save a life If the donor is near death he or she may give more than a fifth. Some say a dying person should limit the amount he or she leaves for tzedakah if the donors' children would need a bequest in order to support themselves. To support Torah scholars. If the donor has a regular job, a steady business income, or is very wealthy he or she may give more than a fifth. However Rav Moshe Feinstein disagrees with this ruling on the grounds that all of us, no matter how rich, need to be reminded that we can suffer reversals To atone for sin BEST. In a place with many advantaged people and few poor, the community should provide the poor with whatever they lack. Each person of adequate means must give his or her fair share (as decided by the community or voluntarily) to meet this requirement. OTHER IDEAS Someone who is in debt should not give large amounts to tzedakah until his indebtedness is paid off, although he is still obligated in the mitzvah of tzedakah It is inappropriate to solicit from a person who gives more than he can afford or deprives himself to avoid shame. Collectors should not embarrass such a person. It is popular nowadays to see tzedakah as a private matter and each person is entitled to decide for himself how much to give. But that is not necessarily the traditional Jewish view. In other times, the community assessed individuals' tzedakah obligation. When individuals did not donate an appropriate amount, the court could force the reluctant donor to give or even confiscate an appropriate amount of his assets. Under certain limited circumstances, the poor could take money by force.

3 MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN Dear Kehilla Once again I am excited to inform you about what we have been doing and what we have in store for you in the coming few months. The Past Few Months It s been a busy past few months and I want to thank all those people who have made it possible. Our special Shabbat with Rav Grossman will be remembered by all. The ladies had a fantastic shiur by Dr Deena Zimmerman, Bnei Akiva enjoyed their Shabbat with us at Shivtei, our Chanukah Shuk was great and the kids had the most unbelievable Chanukah party at Beit Issie Shapiro. Our youth had an Oneg at Rabbi Beller. There is now a full program with each Shabbat having a special theme for all the children s services. Take a look at the website for the details. These kids services have all been restructured and there are lots of parents on the Rota, thank you. Also thanks to all those on the security Rota, but parents, please make sure you know where your kids are at all times. This past Shabbat we had an In House Shabbaton with the Kollel and a guest speaker. Our Special Celebration This is an important year for our Kehilla, we will be celebrating our 25 th anniversary. We are in the planning stages and anyone who wishes to be involved, please contact me. Our plan is to celebrate this milestone by having a banquet which will take place on Yom Yerushalayim, so make sure that you are in the country to celebrate together. We will also use this event as a fundraiser for the extension of our hall to create more facilities for our growing community. We will have a special Shabbat during the same week as Yom Yerushalayim. The Next Few Weeks This Shabbat we once again have Rav Eitan and Meirav with us. They feel very much at home and I thank all those people who have hosted them. On Shabbat B Shalach, Tu B Shevat we will have a Family Seudah Shlishit. We are also in the process of Purim Planning and we promise lots of fun this year. Mazal tov to all the upcoming Bar Mitzvah s and Bat Mizvah s and their families. Unlocking the Parsha with Rav Beller, don t miss out, the shiur is growing every week. The Chessed doesn t stop; let s make all those new comers feel at home. We are looking for people to sponsor kiddushim in February, so if you have simcha, share it with us all. Community Building It s our community so let s try to work on a few things together. Commit ourselves to come to more minyanim, let s try to have a more meaningful tefillah with less talking. Kids, please no running in and out of shul, and no jumping on the walls. We all need to look after our shul more, less mess & please put siddurim back on the shelves after use.
